We investigated diagenesis of the sandstones from the DN2 Gas Field of the Kuqa Foreland Basin(KFB),in order to infer the timing of fluid migration and discuss the linkage between fluids and tectonics.The textures and chemical composition of authigenic minerals,fluid evidence from fluid inclusions and formation water measurements were all used to fulfill this aim.Eodiagenesis occurred with the participation of meteoric water and connate water.Mesodiagenesis is related to high salinity fluids,which were attributed as originating from the overlying Neogene Jidike Formation evaporite(principal minerals including halite,anhydrite,glauberite,carnallite and thenardite).The onset of high salinity fluid migration is inferred to occur during the late Miocene(12.4-9.2 Ma)through the use of homogenization temperatures measured in the present study and K-Ar dating of authigenetic illites from previous work.This period is consistent with the crucial phase(13-10 Ma)that witnessed the rapid uplift of the southern Tianshan Mts and the stage when calcite and anhydrite veins formed in the studied strata.We thus argue that diagenesis related to high salinity fluids occurred as a response to the Tianshan Mts'rapid uplift and related tectonic processes.The flow of high salinity fluids was probably driven by a density gradient and channeled and focused by fractures formed contemporaneously.

A study of the diagenetic evolution of the Late Jurassic sandstones of the shallow marine facies in the Tambar oil field,Norwegian North Sea was carried out to understand its controls on reservoir quality.Core samples and a set of wireline logs obtained from three wells were used to carry out petrographic studies including light optics and scanning electron microscopy,well log analysis,fluid inclusions,X-ray diffraction(XRD)for whole rock samples,clay mineral extracts and stable isotopes.The Tambar reservoir sandstones range mainly from siltstone to fine-grained sandstones,exclusively arkoses cemented mainly by microcrystalline quartz,euhedral quartz overgrowth,dolomite cement,illite and chlorite.Early diagenetic/eodigenetic minerals include pyrite,calcite,and microcrystalline quartz and late diagenetic/mesodiagenetic minerals include quartz overgrowth,dolomite,illite and chlorite.The d18O values of dolomite cement in the Tambar sandstone reservoir range from11.77‰to3.57‰PDB,while the d13C values of the dolomite cement are from5.07‰to1.12‰PDB.Homogenization temperature for fluid inclusions trapped in authigenic quartz fall between 130℃ and 169℃.The reservoir quality is controlled mainly by early formed grain-coating microcrystalline quartz that precipitated from the dissolution of sponge spicules which significantly inhibits quartz overgrowth precipitation.Oil emplacement do not show significant control on reservoir quality because considerable quartz cementation has taken place before the onset of major oil charge.Only the coarse-grained sands show a correlation between quartz cement volume and water saturation.However,the interpreted temperature for dolomite cementation is significantly higher for water leg-suggested effect of oil emplacement on the late dolomite.Under-standing these controls on the reservoir quality will enhance the exploration strategy for the Tambar oil field.

Impacts of Depositional Facies and diagenesis on Reservoir Quality:A Case Study from the Rudist-bearing Sarvak Formation,Abadan Plain,SW Iran

An integrated geological-petrophysical analysis of the rudist-bearing sequence of the Cretaceous Sarvak Formation is given one giant oilfield,and provides an improved understanding of this main reservoir in the Abadan Plain,in the Zagros Basin,SW Iran.The main objective of this study is to evaluate reservoir potential of the Sarvak Formation,and then to utilize the calibrated well log signature to correlate reservoir potential in un-cored wells.Eight main facies are recognized and categorized in five facies groups:lagoon,shoal,rudist-biostrome,slope,and shallow open marine,deposited on a shelf carbonate platform.Given the distribution of diagenetic products and their effects on pore systems,three diagenetic facies namely,(DF-1)low dissolution and cementation;(DF-2);high dissolution;and(DF-3)high cementation are differentiated.The initial sedimentary characteristics in combination with distribution of diagenetic products play an important role in reservoir quality heterogeneity.The effect of diagenetic processes related to disconformities mainly depends on the facies nature below these surfaces.Grain-dominated facies of shoal and rudist debris,observed below the Cenomanian–Turonian disconformity,are mostly characterized by high dissolution and interconnected pore systems.Finally,depositional and diagenetic facies in the studied wells are correlated by petrophysical well log data,leading to distribution of the reservoir zones.Data obtained can be utilized for efficient reservoir characterization of the Sarvak Formation and its equivalent units in the Arabian Plate.

Sedimentary diagenesis and pore characteristics for the reservoir evaluation of Domanik formations(Semiluksk and Mendymsk)in the central part of Volga-Ural petroleum province

The Upper Devonian Semiluksk(Domanik)and Mendymsk carbonate successions have been identified as the most promising unconventional oil and gas deposits in Russia's Volga-Ural petroleum province.Three lithofacies were identified:limestones,organic matter-rich siliceous carbonate,and dolomitic limestones/dolomite.Their sediments are thought to have accumulated in the relatively deep-sea shelf depositional environment.According to X-ray analysis,calcite is the most common mineral phase in the limestones.The siliceous carbonate rocks'major mineral phases were identified to be quartz,followed by calcite.The rocks have relatively poor reservoir qualities,with porosity ranging from 0.1 to 5%and permeability ranging from 0.01 to 10 mD.Petrographic examination of thin sections reveals four major types of pores:1.interparticle pores,which are abundant in all of the examined lithofacies;2.intercrystalline pores formed between dolomite crystals and the very fine components of the siliceous carbonate rocks.***.vugs as a result of leaching,and 4.fracture as a result of tectonic and/or diagenetic events.Plotting the obtained data from the petrographically examined thin sections on the ternary pore plot diagram resulted in the identification of six pore facies and their related diagenetic patterns.Pore facies 1 depicts the pores that formed during the depositional process.Pore facies 4 displays moldic pores.The vugs are represented by pore facies 6.Pore facies 2 is a mixture between pore facies 1 and pore facies 4.Pore facies 3 is a mixture between pore facies 1 and pore facies 6.Pore facies 5 is a mixture between pore facies 4 and pore facies 6.Comparing the petrographic results and the identified pore facies show that pore facies 6 have touching pores and they played the most important role in improving the reservoir quality.The pore facies 4 which have separate pores have the most influence in the reduction of the reservoir quality.The diagenetic origin secondary pores are the most pores identified in the studied carbonate secti

This work aims to reveal the evolution of the porosity in the Triassic Yanchang Formation tight sandstone reservoir of the Xifeng-Ansai area of Ordos Basin. Based on destructive diagenesis （compaction and cementation） and constructive diagenesis （dissolution） of sandstone reservoirs, this study analyzed the diagenesis characteristics of the tight sandstone reservoirs in this area, and discussed the relationship between sandstone diagenesis and porosity evolution in combination with present porosity profile characteristics of sandstone reservoir. The effect simulation principle was employed for the mathematical derivation and simulation of the evolution of porosity in the Yanchang Formation tight sandstone reservoirs. The result shows that compaction always occurs in tight sandstone reservoirs in the Yanchang Formation, and cementation occurs when the burial depth increases to a certain value and remains ever since. Dissolution occurs only at a certain stage of the evolution with window features. In the corresponding present porosity profile, diagenesis is characterized by segmentation. From the shallow to the deep, compaction, compaction, cementation and dissolution, compaction and cementation occur successively. Therefore, the evolution of sandstone porosity can be divided into normal compaction section, acidification and incremental porosity section, and normal compaction section after dissolution. The results show that the evolution of sandstone porosity can be decomposed into porosity reduction model and porosity increase model. The superposition of the two models at the same depth in the three stages or in the same geological time can constitute the evolution simulation of the total porosity in sandstone reservoirs. By simulating the evolution of sandstone reservoir porosity of the eighth member in Xifeng area and the sixth member in Ansai area, it shows that they are similar in the evolution process and trend. The difference is caused by the regional uplift or subsidence and burial depth.

The stratigraphic surface represented by a major contact between the Archean Bundelkhand Granite and the extensive Proterozoic Vindhyan sediments is a regional basement cover unconformity.This crystalline—sedimentary interface reflects an intense weathering of continental crust during marine transgression.Three time-transgressive sand deposition events viz.Kaimur,Rewa and Bhander are mainly witnessed during the entire Vindhyan sedimentation.Stratigraphically,the Upper Rewa Sandstone comprises one of these events in the Vindhyan Basin.Considerable progress has been made in interpreting these sandstones as a function of entirely marine process to a combination of tidal—fluvio—eolian activities.All the results have so far been attained on the basis of sedimentary facies,provenance,palaeocurrent analysis,and some of petrography.A distinct differentiation between marine and fluvial components of the Upper Rewa Sandstone still remains uncertain.Here,we use diagenesis as a parameter for the first time along with facies and palaeocurrent analysis to acquire a clear comprehension of marine-and fluvial-dominated processes.The present study spans 27 square kilometer area covering 15 stratigraphic sections with a collection of 571directional data from the facies specific sedimentary structures,and 28 samples obtained for the thin section analysis.The lower unit of the Upper Rewa Sandstone shows facies association typical of tidal environment,along with polymodal palaeocurrent.These rocks are well sorted and dominantly lithified by authigenic cement.Profuse development of a complex of syntaxial,passive pore fills,and grain replacive cements reflect normally pressured nature of the lower unit sandstones.The upper unit of the Upper Rewa Sandstone however,reveals a facies pattern resembling fluvial processes and unimodal palaeocurrent plot.They exhibit poor sorting,siliceous,and ferruginous matrix,and development of intense stylolites.Since,pressure solution is a dominant mode of lithification;the upper unit rocks therefore,are

Transformation mechanism of muddy carbonate rock by the coupling of bioturbation and diagenesis:A case study of the Cretaceous of the Mesopotamia Basin in the Middle East

The transformation mechanism of muddy carbonate rock by the coupling of bioturbation and diagenesis was stud-ied based on core,cast thin section and physical property data of Cretaceous strata in the Mesopotamia Basin,the Middle East.There are 3 ways of biological transformation of rocks:(1)The living creatures transformed formations mechanically to make the rocks looser and intergranular pores increase.(2)After formation,burrows were backfilled with coarse-grained debris,and then unsaturated fluid infiltrated into the burrows during the penecontemporaneous period,resulting in dissolution.(3)Chemical alteration occurred in abandoned burrows and dolomitization produced a large number of intercrystalline pores.The·coupling of bioturbation and dissolution occurred mainly in the penecontemporaneous phase,and was controlled by rock type,sea level decline,burrow abundance,infillings,and water environment etc.As the burrows had better physical properties than the matrix,unsaturated fluid preferentially migrated along the burrows,leading to dissolution and expansion of the burrows first and then dissolution of the matrix.The coupling of bioturbation and dolomitization occurred mainly in the burial phase.The rich organic matter and reducing bacteria in the burrow provided material basis,reducing conditions and alkaline envi-ronment for dolomitization.The metasomatism in the penecontemporaneous period had little effect on the physical properties of the burrows.When the burrows were se parated from the deposition interface,equimolar metasomatism occurred in the burrows in a closed environment,forming euhedral fine-crystalline dolomite with intercrystalline pores.The transformation degree of bioturbation to muddy carbonate reservoir depends on rock type,density,connectivity,infillings and structure of the burrows.With the increase of the carbonate mud content,the im provement to rock physical properties by bioturbation be-comes more prominent.When the burrows are filled with coarse-grained debris or fine-crystalline dolomite

The Chang 6 reservoir of Yanchang formation in Jingan oilfield has relatively poor quality:the porosity ranges mainly from 8 to 14%,and permeability ranges from 0.018 to 10.48 md,with a mean of 1.10 md,categorized as low porosity and low permeability reservoir type with strong heterogeneity.Petrographic and geochemical analyses of various components in these sandstones have provided clues of diagenesis.The sandstones at the early stage of diagenesis are characterized by non-ferroan calcite cementation,grain-coating,pore-lining clay minerals,and initial dissolution of detrital grains.Authigenic quartz,porefilling and grain-replacive laumontites,albitized detrital plagioclase,authigenic K-feldspar,illite and late ferroan calcite cement dominate the late diagenesis.Reservoir quality is influenced by products of late diagenesis stage,the cement(calcite,albite,quartz,illite,and laumontite)occluded primary and secondary porosity.The organic acidic fluid derived from organic matter in the source rocks during the late diagenesis,which results in the dissolution of detrital plagioclase and laumontite cement and was the main reason for the enhancement of reservoir-quality.As a result of that,the residual primary pore and dissolution pore comprised the main accumulation space for oil and gas,and thus become important targets for hydrocarbon exploration.

Influence of sedimentation and diagenesis on reservoir physical properties:a case study of the Funing Formation,Subei Basin,eastern China

The sandstone of the third member of the Funing Formation(E1f3)in the northern slope zone of the Gaoyou Sag has the typical characteristics of high porosity and ultralow permeability,which makes it difficult for oil to flow.In this study,the lithological characteristics,sedimentary facies,diagenetic characteristics,pore struc-ture,and seepage ability of this sandstone are characterized in detail.Correlation analysis is used to reveal the reason for the sandstone high porosity-low permeability phenom-enon in the study area.The results indicate that this phenomenon is controlled mainly by the following three factors:1)the sedimentary environment is the initial affecting factor,whereby the deposition of a large number of fine-grained materials reduces the primary pores of sandstone.2)The Funing Formation has undergone strong compaction and cementation,which have led to the removal of most of the primary pores and a reduction in size of the throat channels.3)Owing to fluid activity during the later stage of diagenesis,sandstone underwent intense dissolution and a large number of particles(feldspar and lithic debris)formed many dissolution pores(accounting for nearly 60%of the total pore space).Among these factors,dissolution has contributed the most to the development of high porosity-low permeability phenomenon.This is mainly attributed to the inhomogeneous dissolution process,whereby the degree of particle dissolution(e.***.feldspar)exceeds that of cementing minerals(clay and carbonate minerals).The secondary dissolution pores have increased the porosity of sandstone in the study area;however,the pore connectivity(permeability)has not been significantly improved,thus resulting in the special high porosity-low permeability characteristics of this sandstone.

Hydrothermally induced diagenesis: Evidence from shallow marinedeltaic sediments, WilhelmØya, Svalbard

Sedimentary basins containing igneous intrusions within sedimentary reservoir units represent an important risk in petroleum exploration. The Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic sediments at Wilhelm?ya(Svalbard) contains reservoir heterogeneity as a result of sill emplacement and represent a unique case study to better understand the effect of magmatic intrusions on the general burial diagenesis of siliciclastic sediments. Sills develop contact metamorphic aureoles by conduction as presented in many earlier studies. However, there is significant impact of localized hydrothermal circulation systems affecting reservoir sediments at considerable distance from the sill intrusions. Dolerite sill intrusions in the studied area are of limited vertical extent(～12 m thick), but created localized hydrothermal convection cells affecting sediments at considerable distance(more than five times the thickness of the sill)from the intrusions. We present evidence that the sedimentary sequence can be divided into two units:(1) the bulk poorly lithified sediment with a maximum burial temperature much lower than 60-70 ℃,and(2) thinner intervals outside the contact zone that have experienced hydrothermal temperatures(around 140 ℃). The main diagenetic alteration associated with normal burial diagenesis is minor mechanical plastic deformation of ductile grains such as mica. Mineral grain contacts show no evidence of pressure dissolution and the vitrinite reflectance suggests a maximum temperature of ～40 ℃. Contrary to this, part of the sediment, preferentially along calcite cemented flow baffles, show evidence of hydrothermal alteration. These hydrothermally altered sediment sections are characterized by recrystallized carbonate cemented intervals. Further, the hydrothermal solutions have resulted in localized sericitization(illitization) of feldspars, albitization of both K-feldspar and plagioclase and the formation of fibrous illite nucleated on kaolinite.
