Bodies of plants are modularly organized. Development proceeds by adding new modules to open endings with a potential for branching. Each module is autonomous to some extent. Development relies on the self-organized patterns that emerge from the interactions of individual modules. Interactions include both competition and cooperation, and several types of positive and negative feedback loops are involved. Development can be open to external influences, thus enabling the plant to adjust its form to the environment, for example, to the spatial distribution of ecological resources. This paper provides a review on adaptive plasticity in plants.

During development the somatosensory cortex of one hemisphere projects to the homotypic portion of the opposite hemisphere via the corpus callosum. This projection forms in the first postnatal week and there is a critical period during which loss of sensory information will lead to disruption of this callosal projection. We have found that early genetic disruption of the NMDA receptor NR1 subunit in neurons that project from one hemisphere to the other disrupts the orderly formation of this circuit. In addition, we found that by infusing antibodies targeting the extracellular domain of NR1 from P0-P8 in mice that we could block formation of the same circuit. Interestingly, upon ceasing antibody infusion the callosal projection corrects itself over time. In addition to the developmental significance of this work there are important clinical implications. There are many patients who develop anti-NMDAR autoantibody-mediated encephalitis both in adulthood and during development. This implies that this disorder likely disrupts the structural formation of cortical circuits but that some of these effects may be reversible with treatment.
