Recent advances in hydrocarbon exploration have been made in the Member Deng-2 marginal microbial mound-bank complex reservoirs of the Dengying Formation in the western Sichuan Basin, SW China,where the depositional process is regarded confusing. The microfacies, construction types, and depositional model of the Member Deng-2 marginal microbial mound-bank complex have been investigated using unmanned aerial vehicle photography, outcrop section investigation, thin section identification,and seismic reflections in the southwestern Sichuan Basin. The microbialite lithologic textures in this region include thrombolite, dendrolite, stromatolite, fenestral stromatolite, spongiostromata stone,oncolite, aggregated grainstone, and botryoidal grapestone. Based on the comprehensive analysis of“depositional fabrics-lithology-microfacies”, an association between a fore mound, mound framework,and back mound subfacies has been proposed based on water depth, current direction, energy level and lithologic assemblages. The microfacies of the mound base, mound core, mound flank, mound cap, and mound flat could be recognized among the mound framework subfacies. Two construction types of marginal microbial mound-bank complex have been determined based on deposition location, mound scale, migration direction, and sedimentary facies association. Type Jinkouhe microbial mound constructions(TJMMCs) develop along the windward margin owing to their proximity to the seaward subfacies fore mound, with a northeastwardly migrated microbial mound on top of the mud mound,exhibiting the characteristics of large-sized mounds and small-sized banks in the surrounding area. Type E'bian microbial mound constructions(TEMMCs) primarily occur on the leeward margin, resulting from the presence of onshore back mound subfacies, with the smaller southwestward migrated microbial mounds existing on a thicker microbial flat. Sedimentary characteristics and depositional model of a Paleocene-Eocene salt lake in the Jiangling Depression,China

We studied the sedimentary characteristics of a Paleocene-Eocene salt lake in the Jiangling Depression through field core observation,thin section identification,scanning electron microscopy,and X-ray diffraction *** the basis of sedimentary characteristics we have summarized the petrological and mineralogical characteristics of the salt lake and proposed 9 types of grade IV salt *** deposition shows a desalting to salting order of halite-argillaceous-mudstone-mud dolostonemud *** relationship among grade IV rhythms,water salinity and climate fluctuations was *** on the analysis of the relationship between boron content and mudstone color and by combining the mineralogy and sedimentary environment characteristics,we propose that the early and late Paleocene Shashi Formation in the Jiangling Depression was a paleolacustrine depositional environment with a high salt content,which is a representation of the shallow water salt lake depositional *** middle Paleocene Shashi Formation and the early Eocene Xingouzui Formation were salt and brackish sedimentary environments with low salt content in a deep paleolake,which represents a deep salt lake depositional model.

Shales in deep lake basins have become the main focus of continental shale oil and gas *** order to highlight the sedimentary dynamics of mud deposition in deep lake basins,a combination of core observation,thin section examination,X-ray diffraction,and QEMSCAN(quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy)was used to analyze the depositional characteristics of mudrocks in the Chang-7 Member from the Yanchang Formation(Upper Triassic)in Ordos Basin,and to establish a depositional model for mud accumulation in deep lake *** study recognizes four mudrock lithofacies in the Chang-7 Member:(1)the laminated silt-bearing mudstone,which generally develops a binary composition of“silt-clay”or a ternary composition of“silt-clay-organic matter”;(2)the graded mudstone,mainly composed of dark gray and gray-black mudstone sandwiched by silt-bearing mudstone;(3)the massive mudstone,internally showing a uniform distribution of quartz,clay,and carbonate minerals,with also a small amount of organic detritus;and(4)the laminated shale,which is generally composed of clay laminae,and organic laminae of the former *** supply,topographic slope,and flood intensity combine to control the evolution of gravity flows and the transport and deposition of the mudrock in the Chang-7 *** influence of orogeny provides terrain gradient,water depth,abundant sediments at source areas,and triggering mechanism for the formation of gravity *** triggered by wetting events provide the impetus for sediment *** deposition in the Chang-7 Member was mainly related to the transport and sedimentation of mud by hyperpycnal flows and rapid sedimentation by buoyant plume flocculation.A comprehensive evolutionary model for shale accumulation in the deep lake basin is established by integrating various triggering mechanisms and mud transport sedimentary processes.

The rudist buildup depositional model,reservoir architecture and development strategy of the cretaceous Sarvak formation of Southwest Iran

This paper studies the lithofacies,sedimentary facies,depositional models and reservoir architecture of the rudist-bearing Sar-3 zone of Cretaceous Sarvak in the Southwest of Iran by utilizing coring,thin section,XRD data of five coring wells and 3D seismic *** results include the following:According to lithofacies features and their association,the rudist-mound and tidal flat are the main microfacies in the Sar-3 depositional *** investigating the regional tectonic setting and seismic interpretation,a depositional model was built for the Sar-3 zone,which highlights four key points:1)The distribution of the rudist-buildup is controlled by the paleo-high.2)The build-up outside of the wide colonize stage but reached the wave-base level in a short time by regression and formation uplift,and was destroyed by the high energy current,then forming the moundy allochthonous deposition after being dispersed and redeposited.3)The tidal flat develops widely in the upper Sar-3,and the deposition thickness depends on the *** tidal channel develops in the valley and fringe of the Paleo-structure.4)The exposure within the leaching effect by the meteoric water of the top of Sar-3 is the main controlling factor of the reservoir vertical *** Sar-3 zone featured as the dualistic architecture consists of two regions:the lower is the rudist reef limestone reservoir and the upper is the tidal condense limestone *** thickness of each is controlled by the *** Paleo-high zone is the preferential development *** on reservoir characteristics of the different zones,a targeted development strategy has been *** the trajectory in the middle of the oillayer in the paleo-high,and in the paleo-low,make the trajectory crossing the oil-zone and then keep it in the lower.

Formation Mechanisms of Rudstones and Their Effects on Reservoir Quality in the Shulu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, Eastern China

Based on observations made on cores and cuttings from several wells in the lowermost part of the third member of the Shahejie Formation, several rock types, specifically clast-supported rudstone, matrix-supported rudstone, mixed-source rudstone, calcisiltite/calcarenite, massive calci- lutite and laminated calcilutite, have been identified in the Shulu sag. According to the sedimentary structures and distribution characteristics of these rocks, the carbonate breccias fall into two cate- gories, based on their origins： one formed by fan-delta channel sedimentation, whereas the other formed by earthquake-induced slump fan deposition. Clast-supported rudstone and matrix- supported rudstone are the main lithologies deposited by braided rivers in the fan delta plain and front, of which the pore space is mainly dissolution pores within gravels and tectonic fissures. Clast- supported rudstone, matrix-supported rudstone and mixed-source rudstone are the main lithologies of the earthquake-induced slump fans. These carbonate breccias developed along with soft-sediment deformation structures, which are interpreted as seismites and are widely distributed in the sag, in which intercrystalline pores, intergranular pores and fissures created from diagenetic shrinkage are developed. The two kinds of rudstones have different reservoir characteristics and oil/gas testing re- suits. The rudstones generated in the fan delta have higher porosity and permeability, as well as bet- ter oil/gas testing results. Thus, they are key targets for petroleum exploration.

Review of research in internal-wave and internal-tide deposits of China

Study of internal-wave and internal-tide deposits is a very young research field in deep-water sedimentology. It has been just twenty years since the first example of internal-wave and internal-tide deposits was identified in the stratigraphic record. Since that time, Chinese scholars have made unremitting efforts and gained some significant research achievements in this field. This paper briefly outlines the history and main achievements of research of internal-wave and internal-tide deposits in China, describes depositional charac-teristics, sedimentary successions, types of lithofacies, and depositional models of internal-wave and internal-tide deposits identified mainly from ancient strata, and summarizes the existing problems in this research field. New advances in marine physics should be applied to research of the subject of internal-wave and internal-tide deposition, whereas the sedimentary characteristics of internal-wave and internal-tide deposits may be used to deduce the physical processes of their creation. Flume experiments on internal-wave and internal-tide deposition should also be put in practice as often as possible, so that the mechanisms of internal-wave and internal-tide deposition can be explored.

depositional conditions and modeling of Triassic Oil shale in southern Ordos Basin using geochemical records

Based on the element geochemistry and biomarkers of the oil shale from the Chang 7 sub-unit in the southern Ordos Basin,the depositional conditions and organic source of the oil shale are *** analyses show that the oil shale has a homologous organic matter source,with a mix of plankton and advanced plants.U/Th and V/Ni ratios suggest that the redox condition is dominated by a reducing condition,and the degree of anoxia in the Tongchuan area is higher than that of the Xunyi ***/Ba ratios illustrate that the oil shale is deposited in fresh water and the paleosalinity in the Tongchuan area is slightly ***/Ti ratios imply that the Tongchuan area underwent obvious hydrothermal fluid ***/Cu ratios show warm and humid paleoclimate in both *** assessed by(La/Yb)NASC,the deposition rate in the Tongchuan area is relatively ***/Co and Th/U ratios suggest that the paleo-water-depth in the Tongchuan area is *** source rock could have the advance plants source,which must have close relationship with the Qinling *** the paleoenvironment,the Tongchuan area has better depositional conditions,and is the key oil shale exploration area in the southern Ordos Basin.

depositional Patterns and Oil／Gas Accumulation Features of Sha-3 Member Turbidites in Dongying Depression, Bohai Bay Basin

Recent exploration results indicate that a significant exploration potential remains in the Dongying Depression of the Bohai Bay Basin and the undiscovered oil and gas are largely reservoired in subtle traps including turbidite litholigcal traps of the Sha-3 Member. In order to effectively guide the exploration program targeting turbidites, this study will focus on the depositional models of the Sha-3 Member turbidites and oil/gas accumulation characteristics in these turbidites. Two corresponding relationships were found. One is that the East African Rift Valley provides a modern analog for the depositional systems in the Dongying Depression. The other is that the depositional models of line-sourced slope aprons, single point-source submarine fan and multiple source ramp turbidite, established for deep-sea turbidites, can be applied to interpret the depositional features of the turbidite fans of three different origins: slope turbidite aprons, lake floor turbidite fans and delta-fed turbidite fans in the Sha-3 Member. Updip sealing integrity is the key factor determining whether oil/gas accumulates or not in the slope aprons and lake floor fans. The factors controlling oil/gas migration and accumulation in the delta-fed turbidite fans are not very clear. Multiple factors rather than a single factor probably played significant roles in these processes.
