A Numerical Simulation of the Impact of Tropical Western Pacific SST Anomalies on the decadal shift of the Meiyu Belt

The sea surface temperature （SST） of the tropical western Pacific Ocean （TWPO） showed a pronounced warming in the late 1990s. Using numerical experiments of a regional climate model （RegCM）, we analyzed the impact of this warming on rainfall over the Yangtze-Huaihe River valley of China during the Meiyu period （June July）. The model results revealed that the observed decadal changes in Meiyu rainfall since the late 1990s can be reproduced by a control experiment forced by the observed SST. Additionally, the sensitivity experiments suggested that the warming trend in the TWPO played a substantial role in the northward shift of the Meiyu belt in the late 1990s.

The Arctic near-surface air temperatures are increasing more than twice as fast as the global average-a feature known as Arctic amplification （AA）. A modified AA index is constructed in this paper to emphasize the contrast of warming rate between polar and mid-latitude regions, as well as the spatial and temporal characteristics of AA and their influence on atmospheric circulation over the Northern Hemisphere. Results show that AA has a pronounced annual cycle. The positive or negative phase activities are the strongest in autumn and winter, the weakest in summer. After experiencing a remarkable decadal shift from negative to positive phase in the early global warming hiatus period, the AA has entered into a state of being enlarged continuously, and the decadal regime shift of AA in about 2002 is affected mainly by decadal shift in autumn. In terms of spatial distribution, AA has maximum warming near the surface in almost all seasons except in summer. Poleward of 20~N, AA in autumn has a significant influence on the atmospheric circulation in the following winter. The reason may be that the autumn AA increases the amplitude of planetary waves, slows the wave speeds and weakens upper-level zonal winds through the thermal wind relation, thus influencing surface air temperature in the following winter. The AA correlates to negative phase of the Arctic oscillation （AO） and leads AO by 0-3 months within the period 1979-2002. However, weaker relationship between them is indistinctive after the decadal shift of AA.

The remote response of the East Asian summer monsoon （EASM） to European black carbon （EUBC） aerosols was studied by using an ensemble of sensitivity experiments with the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory （GFDL） atmospheric general circulation model （AGCM） Atmospheric Model version 2.1 （AM2.1）.The results show that EUBC causes an enhanced *** resulted enhanced southwesterly brings more moisture supply from the Bay of Bengal,which causes an increase in precipitation over the Yangtze River valley,northeastem China,the eastern part of the Yellow River valley,and the Tibetan *** examination suggests that EUBC induces enhanced tropospheric heating over most of the Eurasian Continent through a propagating wave train and horizontal air temperature *** phenomenon results in intensified thermal contrast between land and ocean,which accounts for the enhanced ***,reductions in EUBC emission in 1992 may have contributed to decadal weakening of the EASM in the early 1990s.

A decadal change of the tropical tropospheric temperature （TT） was identified to occur in the winter of 1997. Compared with that in the former period （1979-1996）, the wintertime TT was significantly high over most of the tropical regions except over the tropical eastern Pacific during the latter period （1997-2014） because the sea surface temperature （SST） exhibited a decadal La Nifia-like pattern after 1997. The warm SST anomalies over the tropical western Pacific facilitated enhanced precipitation and increased heat release to the tropical atmosphere, leading to a warmer tropical tropo- sphere in the latter period. In addition to the mean TT values, the interannual variability of the tropical TT changed in 1997. The leading mode of the tropical TT explained 72.9 % of the total variance in the former period. It led to significant warming over midlatitude North America via a Pacific-North America （PNA）-like wave train and off the coast of East Asia via an anomalous lower-tropospheric anticyclone around the Philippines. The mode remained a similar pattern but explained 85.4 % of the total variance in the latter period, and its location was slightly westward-shifted compared with that in the former period. As a result, the structure of the PNA-like wave train changed, leading to anomalous warming over northwestern North America and enhanced precipitation over the southern North America. Meanwhile, the anomalous lower- tropospheric anticyclone around the Philippines shifted westward, leading to increased precipitation and regional warming over East Asia. The decadal changes of the leading mode of the tropical TT and its influences on the extratropical climate can be attributed to the changes of the tropical SST variability.
