Linkage between precipitation isotopes and water vapor sources in the monsoon margin:Evidence from arid areas of Northwest China

The isotope composition in precipitation has been widely considered as a tracer of monsoon activity.Compared with the coastal region,the monsoon margin usually has limited precipitation with large fluctuation and is usually sensitive to climate change.The water resource management in the monsoon margin should be better planned by understanding the composition of precipitation isotope and its influencing factors.In this study,the precipitation samples were collected at five sampling sites(Baiyin City,Kongtong district,Maqu County,Wudu district,and Yinchuan City)of the monsoon margin in the northwest of China in 2022 to analyze the characteristics of stable hydrogen(δd)and oxygen(δ18O)isotopes.We analyzed the impact of meteorological factors(temperature,precipitation,and relative humidity)on the composition of precipitation isotope at daily level by regression analysis,utilized the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory(HYSPLIT)-based backward trajectory model to simulate the air mass trajectory of precipitation events,and adopted the potential source contribution function(PSCF)and concentration weighted trajectory(CWT)to analyze the water vapor sources.The results showed that compared with the global meteoric water line(GMWL),the slope of the local meteoric water line(LMWL;δd=7.34δ^(18)O-1.16)was lower,indicating the existence of strong regional evaporation in the study area.Temperature significantly contributed toδ18O value,while relative humidity had a significant negative effect onδ18O value.Through the backward trajectory analysis,we found eight primary locations that were responsible for the water vapor sources of precipitation in the study area,of which moisture from the Indian Ocean to South China Sea(ITSC)and the western continental(CW)had the greatest influence on precipitation in the study area.The hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in precipitation are significantly influenced by the sources and transportation paths of air mass.In addition,the results of PSCF and CWT analysis showed that the

Quantifying Contribution of Recycled Moisture to Precipitation in Temperate Glacier Region,Southeastern Tibetan Plateau,China

Recycled moisture is an important indicator of the renewal capacity of regional water resources.due to the existence of Yulong Snow Mountain,Lijiang in Yunnan Province,southeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau,China,is the closest ocean glacier area to the equator in Eurasia.daily precipitation samples were collected from 2017 to 2018 in Lijiang to quantify the effect of sub-cloud evaporation and recycled moisture on precipitation combined with the d-excess model during monsoon and non-monsoon periods.The results indicated that the d-excess values of precipitation fluctuated between–35.6‰and 16.0‰,with an arithmetic mean of 3.5‰.The local meteoric water line(LMWL)wasδd=7.91δ~(18)O+2.50,with a slope slightly lower than the global meteoric water line(GMWL).Subcloud evaporation was higher during the non-monsoon season than during the monsoon season.It tended to peak in March and was primarily influenced by the relative humidity.The source of the water vapour affected the proportion of recycled moisture.According to the results of the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory(HYSPLIT)model,the main sources of water vapour in Lijiang area during the monsoon period were the southwest and southeast monsoons.during the non-monsoon period,water vapour was transported by a southwesterly flow.The recycled moisture in Lijiang area between March and October 2017 was 10.62%.Large variations were observed between the monsoon and non-monsoon seasons,with values of 5.48%and 25.65%,respectively.These differences were primarily attributed to variations in the advection of water vapour.The recycled moisture has played a supplementary role in the precipitation of Lijiang area.

Precipitation isotope ratios(O and H)record the history of water phase transitions and fractionation processes during moisture transport and rainfall formation.Here,we evaluated the isotopic composition of precipitation over the central-southeastern region of Brazil at different timescales.Monthly isotopic compositions were associated with classical effects(rainfall amount,seasonality,and continentality),demonstrating the importance of vapor recirculation processes and different regional atmospheric systems(South American Convergence Zone-SACZ and Cold Fronts-CF).While moisture recycling and regional atmospheric processes may also be observed on a daily timescale,classical effects such as the amount effect were not strongly correlated(δ^(18)O-precipitation rate r≤-0.37).daily variability revealed specific climatic features,such asδ^(18)O depleted values(~-6‰to-8‰)during the wet season were associated with strong convective activity and large moisture availability.daily isotopic analysis revealed the role of different moisture sources and transport effects.Isotope ratios combined with d-excess explain how atmospheric recirculation processes interact with convective activity during rainfall formation processes.Our findings provide a new understanding of rainfall sampling timescales and highlight the importance of water isotopes to decipher key hydrometeorological processes in a complex spatial and temporal context in central-southeastern Brazil.

黄河三角洲降水同位素变化特征及水汽来源

为揭示黄河三角洲盐碱地地区的降水来源、形成及影响机制,利用降水稳定同位素,特别是δ^(17)O、17O-excess,以及气团轨迹模型HYSPLIT,研究黄河三角洲东营地区5—10月不同时间尺度及降水强度[(50 mm·d^(-1))]的降水同位素变化特征及水汽来源。结果表明:5—10月降水同位素的变化范围较大,旱季降水的同位素变化范围小于雨季,且比雨季富集。降水强度d^(-1)的降水,δ′18O[δ′18O=ln(δ^(18)O+1)]与δ′17O[δ′17O=ln(δ^(17)O+1)]的降水线斜率最小,为0.5211,降水易受水汽源地蒸发作用的影响;10 mm·d^(-1)≤降水强度d^(-1)时,斜率最大,为0.5268。对于0~50 mm·d^(-1)4种不同强度的降水,随降水量增多δ^(2)H;δ^(18)O和δ^(17)O值均降低。旱季降水17O-excess与温度呈正相关,可能受到大陆循环水汽的影响;雨季降水17O-excess与相对湿度呈负相关,受蒸发作用较小。HYSPLIT气团轨迹模型表明,旱季降水主要受大陆性季风影响,而雨季降水受海洋性和大陆性季风的共同影响。综上,降水受不同水汽来源地蒸发、局地气象因素和大气水汽来源的共同影响,使得不同尺度同位素存在差异。本研究可为黄河三角洲地区紧缺的水资源分配提供科学依据。

Evaporative enrichment of stable isotopes(δ^(18)O and δd) in lake water and the relation to lake-level change of Lake Qinghai, Northeast Tibetan Plateau of China

Stable isotopic compositions （δ18O and 6d） have been utilized as a useful indicator for evaluating the current and historical climatic and environmental changes. Therefore, it is vital to understand the relationship be- tween the stable isotopic contents in lake water and the variations of lake level, particularly in Lake Qinghai, China. In this study, we analyzed the variations of isotope compositions （δ18O, 6d and d-excess） in lake water and pre- cipitation by using the samples that were collected from Lake Qinghai region during the period from 2009 to 2012. The results showed that the average isotopic contents of δ18O and 6d in lake water were higher than those in pre- cipitation, which were contrary to the variations of d-excess. The linear regression correlations between δ18O and 6d in lake water and precipitation showed that the local evaporative line （LEL） in lake water （δd=5.88δ18O-2.41） deviated significantly from the local meteoric water line （LMWL）in precipitation （δd=8.26δ18O＋16.91）, indicating that evaporative enrichment had a significant impact on isotopic contents in lake water. Moreover, we also quanti- fied the Eli ratio （evaporation-to-input ratio） in Lake Qinghai based on the lake water isotopic enrichment model derived from the Rayleigh equation. The changes of E/I ratios （ranging from 0.29 to 0.36 between 2009 and 2012） clearly revealed the shifts of lake levels in Lake Qinghai in recent years. The average E/I ratio of 0.40 reflected that water budget in Lake Qinghai was positive, and consistent with the rising lake levels and the increasing lake areas in many lakes of the Tibetan Plateau. These findings provide some evidences for studying the hydrological balance or water budget by using δ18O values of lake sedimentary materials and contribute to the reconstruction of paleo- lake water level and paleoclimate from an isotopic enrichment model in Lake Qinghai.

为探究关中平原降水氢氧稳定同位素特征及其水汽来源,本研究选取关中腹地的杨凌站点次降水为研究对象,利用当地2015~2018年间的98场次降水样品及同期气象资料,分析该地区降水氢氧稳定同位素(δ2H、δ18O和δ17O)组成特征及其影响因素,建立当地大气降水线和三氧同位素大气降水线方程,并利用δ18O、d-excess和17O-excess指标尝试探讨当地可能存在的降水水汽来源,定量描述海洋和内陆源水汽对区域降水的贡献.结果表明,杨凌地区降水氢氧稳定同位素存在明显的季节性变化,同位素组成雨季(5~10月)贫化,旱季(11月~次年4月)富集;当地大气降水线的斜率和截距分别为7.7和9.1,说明研究区降水受到一定程度的蒸发分馏影响;三氧同位素大气降水线斜率为0.528,介于海水平衡分馏斜率(0.529)与水汽扩散斜率(0.518)之间,表明研究区处于海洋气团向内陆干旱区迁移的路径上.综合分析δ18O、d-excess和17O-excess,发现研究区降水受到来自东南季风的暖湿气团和来自西风的干冷气团的共同贡献,其中约有55%~79%的降水水汽来源于海洋,主要集中于6~8月;21%~45%的水汽来源于内陆和局地蒸发,主要集中于10月~次年4月. 5月和9月降水水汽来源复杂,可能受海洋水汽和内陆水汽的共同补给.

Origin of dissolve Ions in Groundwaters in the Northern densu River Basin of Ghana Using Stable Isotopes of 18O and 2H

Stable isotopes of oxygen-18 and deuterium content in groundwater, surface water and rainfall in the northern part of the densu river basin were studied with the main aim of identifying the origin and sources of ions in the groundwater in the area. The conversion of stable isotopes to d-excess was also exploited as a complementary tool to understand the processes of recharge. A comparison of the isotopic data with the rainfall, Local Meteoric Water Line (LMWL) and Global Meteoric Water Line (GMWL) indicates that the groundwater in the study area is mainly meteoric with few groundwater and all the surface water showing an evidence of evaporation. The study has also shown that, mineral dissolution from the geology is the main factor controlling the chemistry of the groundwater with evaporation having a minimal effect. The d-excess values show that the groundwater has undergone dilution with the rainfall and this is observed from the decrease of the d-excess of the groundwater with increase in Oxygen-18. This observation also suggests a modern day recharge to the groundwater.
