Optimization of X-mode electron cyclotron current drive in high-electron-temperature plasma in the EAST tokamak

A discharge with electron temperature up to 14 keV has been achieved in *** of the electron cyclotron current drive(ECCD)efficiency at high electron temperature under EAST parameters is presented using C3PO/LUKE *** results show that the ECCD efficiency of X-mode increases with central electron temperature up to 10 keV and then starts to decrease above 10 keV,at a specific magnetic field and toroidal *** efficiency degradation is due to the presence of the third harmonic extraordinary(X3)downshifted absorption at the low field side(LFS);even the cold resonance of X3 mode is located outside the *** the electron temperature increases from 5 to 20 ke V,the X3 absorption increases from 0.9%to 96.4%.The trapping electron effect at the LFS produces a reverse Ohkawa *** competition between the Fisch–Boozer current drive and the Ohkawa current drive results in a decrease in ECCD *** efficiency optimization is achieved through two *** is to increase the toroidal angle,leading to X2 mode predominating again over X3 mode and the electron resonance domain of X2 mode moving far from the trapped/passing *** second one is to increase the magnetic field to move away the X3 resonance layer from the plasma,hence less EC power absorbed by X3 mode.

The investigation of electron cyclotron(EC)wave absorption and current drive has been performed for the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor(CFETR)hybrid scenarios using the TORAY *** achieve the physics goal of the EC system in CFETR,a total of four wave frequency values and nine locations of launching antennas have been considered,and the injection poloidal and toroidal angles have been scanned *** electron cyclotron current drive(ECCD)efficiency of the 170 GHz EC system is quite low due to the wave-particle interactions being located at the low-field *** optimize the ECCD efficiency,the wave frequency is increased up to 221–250 GHz,which leads to the power being deposited at the high-field *** off-axis ECCD efficiency can be significantly enhanced by launching EC waves from the top window and injecting them towards the high-field *** optimized ECCD efficiency atρ=0.32 and atρ=0.4 is 2.9 and 2.2 times that of 170 GHz,respectively.

A three dimensional bounce-averaged Fokker-Planck （FP） numerical code has been newly developed based on fully implicit iterative solving method, and relativistic effect is also included in the code. The code has been tested against various benchmark cases： Ohmic con ductivity in the presence of weak Ohmic electric field, runaway losses of electrons in the presence of strong Ohmic electric field, lower hybrid current drive and electron cyclotron current drive via two- or three-dimensional simulation. All the test cases run fast and correctly during calculations. As a result, the code provides a set of powerful tools for studying radio frequency wave heating and current drive in tokamak plasmas.

Using the Grad-Shafranov equation, the magnetic configuration is obtained. With this configuration, Brambilla＇s ray tracing theory has been used to study the propagation of LH waves. The qualitative study of the feasibility of LHCD in the non-circular cross section tokamak HL-2A is made. The optimized current drive method is discussed.

The field-reversed configuration (FRC) offers an attractive alternative approach to magnetically confined fusion because of its extremely high β, simple linear geometry, and natural divertor for helium ash removal. Multi-hundred eV and high density FRCs have been produced using the standard Field Reversed Theta Pinch (RFTP) method, with a confinement scaling that leads to fusion conditions. These FRCs are, however, limited to only tens of mWb fluxes and sub-msec lifetime. Recent progress has been made in building up the flux and sustaining the FRC current using Rotating Magnetic Fields (RMF) in the Translation, Sustainment, and Confinement (TCS) facility at the University of Washington. TCS has demonstrated formation and steady-state sustainment of standard, flux-confined, prolate FRCs. The RMF also provides stability for the n = 2 rotational mode, which is the dominant global instability observed experimentally. Simple calculations show that a strong radially inward force imposed by the RMF increases proportionally to any local outward deformation of the plasma cross section. Evidence of this has been experimentally demonstrated, and the effects of various RMF antenna geometries studied. High temperature FRCs could also be produced in TCS by translating high energy plasmoids formed in the normal theta pinch manner into the confinement chamber containing the RMF antennas. Extremely interesting results were obtained for this translation and capture process. The plasmoids can survive the violent dynamics of supersonic reflections off magnetic mirror structures, producing a stable high-β, near-FRC state with substantial flux conversion from toroidal to poloidal. This is a tribute not only to the robustness of FRCs, but also to the tendency of an FRC to assume a preferred state for a magnetized plasma. The magnetic helicity, as inferred by a simple interpretive model, is approximately preserved, possibly conforming to a high-β relaxation principle.

Experiments on the start-up and formation of spherical tokamak plasmas by electron cyclotron heating alone without ohmic heating and electrode discharge assisted electron cyclotron wave current start-up will be carried out on the SUNIST (Sino United Spherical Tokamak) device. The 2.45 GHz/100 kW/30 ms microwave power system and 1000 V/50 A power supply for electrode discharge are ready for experiments with non-inductive current drive.
