Narrative modeling and cultural literacy in the storyworld:a quest for meaning

Following Per Aage Brandt's"Towards a cognitive semiotics"(2011),culture as a cognitive-semiotic model allows us to look into the interrelation of cognition and signs through the act of interpretation of ***,culture characterized as habits of feeling,attention,thought,and action plays a role of modeling in the *** cultural evolution,culture also has a feature of practice of habit-taking for transformation through dialogic relations of semiosis from Peirce's semiotic *** paper argues for narrative modeling which enables habit-taking in feelings by way of analogical reasoning in a form of parable as cognitive process.A story in a form of qualia as a model for thought is embodied in narrative modeling to be enactive by a storytelling ***,narrative modeling reveals the process of thought through habit-taking in feelings of empathy and sympathy to a feeling of an idea as a *** leads to an act of understanding other mind,sharing the meaning and value of a story for enhancing sensibility and cultural literacy for cultural *** journey of story-making and story-telling by way of narrative modeling shows a trajectory for a quest for meaning and value which will be found between"you"and"I".

cultural literacy and World Literature： A Case Study

How much more can be gained from a piece of World Literature when the reader is semiotically literate in the culture that produced the work？ What are the implications of introducing the element of cultural literacy into the teaching of world literature, and how might culturally contextualizing the narrative enhance the reading experience for those who may not be familiar with the national culture that produced the work？ This paper examines these questions using as a case study The Tale of Genji （n.d.）, a novel from llth century Japan and ＂La Troisi6me Jeunesse de Madame Prune＂（1905）, a French text set in Japan at the turn of the 20th century. Using examples taken from each writer＇s text, the author will show how a knowledge of both the target culture and the time period in which the work was produced can serve as a critical tool for analyzing the text; the former text shall be used to argue for an integration of a cultural anthropology element into the teaching of world literature, while the latter example shall be used to argue for the importance of contextualizing a text within its historical creation period. In concluding, the author shall examine the ways in which including an element of cultural literacy can lead to a truly interdisciplinary, trans-national, and trans-linguistic understanding of a particular literary text.

Digital Devices and Self-Expression among Teenagers in Osogbo, South-Western Nigeria

Digital devices have reshaped human communication in today's technology driven society. These devices, as a medium of identity and self-expression, now determine personal, domestic, and corporate interactions by providing access to digital and online facilities enabled by an influx of computer and portable mobile devices into the Nigerian market. The effect of this digitalization on self-expression cuts across contexts and age categories. This study, driven by new media theory and the theory of transitivity in systemic functional linguistics, examined the influence of digital devices on identity and self-expression among undergraduate teenagers in Osogbo, Osun State. Carefully selected through stratified and convenience sampling techniques, undergraduate teenagers involved in the survey—which employed a questionnaire—and focus group discussions, revealed that their preference for interactive chats, social media picture galleries, captions on photographs, and video subtitles outweighed their propensity to read long or academic texts and partake in online economic activities. Most of our respondents explored online communication through their mobile devices, while others accessed the internet on personal computers at home with little or no parental guidance or supervision. Subsequently, age falsification, wrong or misleading self-identification, and a consequent cultural literacy were common among undergraduate teenagers online. A selfregulation facility was then recommended alongside parental and caregiver monitoring of teenagers' virtual communication to reduce the influence of social media on teenagers' time management and self-identity. Further research is also recommended in the field of ICT to detect age falsification and other forms of online false-identity among minors.
