Periodic Modulation of Nonlinearity in a Two-Core Photonic Crystal Fiber: A Numerical Investigation

We present a numerical investigation of the propagation and the switching of ultra-short pulses (100 fs) in a two-core nonlinear coupler of photonic crystal fibers constructed with periodically modulated the non-linearity fiber (PMNL-PFC). Our simulations are taking into account different amplitude and frequency modulations of the PMNL-PFC. A coupler for coupling whose length is Lc = 1.8 cm, the transmission characteristics, the compression factor, the crosstalk (Xtalk) and extinction ratio (Xratio) levels of the first order solitons were studied for low to high pump energies considering 2Lc. By an analysis on the reference channel (channel 2), it is observed that at low modulation frequencies an increase occurs in the switching power increasing transmission efficiency. For high modulation frequencies, the transmitted energy efficiency loses. The switching pulses are stronger for low frequency and high amplitude modulation. The Xtalk is a function of the measurement made on the secondary channel (channel 1). It was observed that this unwanted high-frequency energy increases to lessen the measure of the amplitude modulation. In summary, we have demonstrated that introduction of a non-linearity profile takes the periodically modulated PMNL-PFC to strong variations at transmission efficiency, Xtalk, Xratio a function of frequency and modulation amplitude and the input power.

Solving Dynamic Spectrum Management Problem Based on Cloud Computing Using Genetic Algorithm

With the rapid development of wireless sensor network （WSN）, the demands of limited radio frequency spectrum rise sharply, thereby dealing with the frequency assignment of WSN scientifically and efficiently becomes a popular topic. To improve the frequency utilization rate in WSN, a spectrum management system for WSN combined with cloud computing technology should be considered. From the optimization point of view, the study of dynamic spectrum management can be divided into three kinds of methods, including Nash equilibrium, social utility maximization, and competitive economy equilibrium. In this paper, we propose a genetic algorithm based approach to allocate the power spectrum dynamically. The objective is to maximize the sum of individual Shannon utilities with the background interference and crosstalk consideration. Compared to the approach in [1], the experimental result shows better balance between efficiency and effectiveness of our approach.

A Systems Biological Perspective of Cellular Stress-Directed Programmed Cell Death

Each eukaryotic cell of multicellular organisms must be able to maintain its integrity by sensing both external and internal stimuli. The primary goal of the generated response mechanism is to drive back the system to the former or to a new homeostatic state. Moreover, the response has to provide an accurate survival-or-death decision to avoid any “misunderstanding” and its unwanted consequences. New data revealed that a systems-level crosstalk of molecular networks has an essential role in achieving the correct characteristic of the response. Although many molecular components of these processes already have been revealed, several elements and regulatory connections of crosstalk are still missing. These “gaps” of the complex control networks make hardly impossible to present comprehensive models. Therefore we approach the questions from a systems biology aspect by combining the experimental results with the special technique of mathematical modelling. In this short report we discuss some novel and preliminary data gained by this approach on the crosstalk between life and death decisions under cellular stress, to get a systems biological view of these networks.

Shade-Inducible Gene Expression Change in Arabidopsis thaliana at Different Temperatures

We tested whether the plant response to an environmental factor could be affected by the context of another factor by using shade avoidance response at different temperatures. Depleting the red light (R;λmax = 660 nm) and/or enriching the far-red light (FR;λmax = 730 nm) results in a low R:FR ratio in the environment, which induces shade avoidance response such as elongation of petioles and reduction of plant pigments. On the other hand, warmer environmental temperature is known to mimic shade avoidance response under normal light condition, suggesting a potential crosstalk between the temperature and the light quality signals. Therefore, we investigated the patterns of gene expression responses to low R:FR ratio in different temperature contexts (22°C and 26°C) through microarray analyses. Similar, yet distinct patterns between the two responses were implicated by the levels of correlation in the commonly affected MapMan bins. However, the induction levels of typical shade genes such as ATHB2, IAA29, IAA19, HFR1, YUC8, and FT were very similar at both temperatures. Moreover, petiole length, chlorophylls, carotenoids, and anthocyanins contents did not support any statistically significant interaction between the light quality and the high temperature responses despite the obvious independent effect of each signal, which suggests cumulative effects of two independent responses. Nevertheless, other types of low R: FR-responsive genes with differential expression patterns at different temperatures were identified. They are overrepresented in secondary metabolism, lipid transport, oxidative stress, jasmonic acid, ethylene, light, pathogen defense responses, and extracellular region.

Electromagnetic Coupling Modeling of Microstrip Lines Used in Switching Power Supplies

One of the major problems in electromagnetic compatibility is the interference due to erosstalk on the PCB （printed circuit board） in the SiP （system-in-package） technology. In this work, electromagnetic coupling modeling of coupled microstrip lines used in switching power supplies is presented. The different blocks which are connected through buses realized on PCBs will be considered as a coupled transmission line. The coupled microstrip transmission lines are modeled by a mathematical model based on the MoM （method of moments）. This model is done by Maflab routines. A SPICE （simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis） model is proposed for the prediction of the NEXT （near^crosstalk） and the FEXT （far-crosstalk） at the terminals of the command line. This command line is often victim of electromagnetic interference emitted by a transmission line source close. Some solutions against crosstalk depending on the physical parameters of the coupled transmission lines are proposed.

Performance Analysis on WDMA Networks with Wavelength Routers and In-line Amplifiers under Non-ideal Signal Extinction Ratio

Signal extinction ratio (EXT) induced penalty in WDMA networks with wavelength routers and in line optical amplifiers is investigated. Theoretical results show that EXT can greatly influence network performance when signal related beat noise dominates. EXT should be higher than 10dB to prevent steep degradation of power penalty. Furthermore, a trade off between the number of wavelength routers and that of in line amplifiers within WDMA networks should be made.

Background, Motivation and Objective Acceleration detection has been one of the most important applications of MEMS micro sensors. In recent years, a series of accelerometer design scheme have been widely studied, including piezoresistance, capacitance, piezoelectric, resonant, and etc. However, piezoresistive accelerometer has the disadvantages of high power consumption and poor linearity and temperature stability. For capacitive accelerometer, due to its large parasitic capacitance, it is difficult to obtain high sensitivity. Meanwhile, piezoelectric accelerometer can improve the sensitivity and bandwidth. However, for many applications, such as precise guidance missiles, triaxial crosstalk problem becomes a critical issue. In this paper, we present a study of triaxial separated piezoelectric micromachined accelerometer with an aim of solving the crosstalk problem for piezoelectric accelerometers. Statement of Contribution/Methods In our study, the detection of the accelerations in the X,Y, Z-axis direction are sensing with 3 separated micro mechanical structures. For the X,Y axis detection, the intermediate mass block is fixed on the frame by two cantilever beams, and the bottom electrode, the PZT piezoelectric thin film and the upper electrode are sequentially deposited on the cantilever beam. For the Z axis detection, two cantilever beams are symmetrically laid out bent, and the PZT thin films for sensing are symmetrically distributed. Analytical and numerical methods have been used for the design of the micro accelerometers. Results In order to predict and optimize the performance of the accelerometers, we analyze the two key technical parameters of the accelerometer by means of mathematical modeling: charge sensitivity and the 1st order resonance frequency of the micro structures. The study shows that with the increase of the width of the cantilever beam, the charge sensitivity increases in a small scale, and with the increase of the thickness of the cantilev
