Monitoring rock desert formation caused by two different origins(ice-snow melting and drying)through remote sensing is crucial to our understanding of the interaction between the underlying surface of different rock desert and land-atmosphere types,as well as the relationship between bare land and soil erosion.A number of achievements have been made in remote sensing monitoring of desert areas,but there is a lack of accurate classification and remote sensing identification of rock desert types based on formation mechanism.In this study,the north and south sides of the eastern Kunlun Mountains in the northern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China were taken as the study areas.Landsat operational landscape imager,digital elevation model,and precipitation and temperature grid data were used as data sources.By identifying the bare areas based on the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),we used the multi-element fusion method of contours,isotherms,and isohyets to identify the rock desert types in the ice-snow melting and dry areas.The results showed that:(1)the rock desert areas identified by remote sensing based on topographic and meteorological elements were highly accurate,with an overall accuracy of 88.45%and kappa coefficient of 0.77.The multi-element fusion method of contours,isotherms,and isohyets could effectively identify the rock desert types in the ice-snow melting and dry areas;(2)the optimal segmentation range of the ice-snow melting and dry areas was 3600 m contour,-2°C-2°C isotherms,and 100-130 mm isohyets.The areas with elevation less than 3600 m,annual average temperature higher than 2°C,and average annual precipitation less than 100 mm were rock desert in the dry areas.The range of-2°C-2°C isotherms and 100-130 mm isohyets was the transition area between the ice-snow melting and dry areas.The areas with elevation higher than 3600 m,annual average temperature less than-2°C,and average annual precipitation higher than 130 mm were rock desert in the ice-snow melting areas;and(3)the identifi

Centerline Extraction for Image Segmentation Using Gradient and Direction Vector Flow Active contours

In this paper, we propose a fast centerline extraction method to be used for gradient and direction vector flow of active contours. The gradient and direction vector flow is a recently reported active contour model capable of significantly improving the image segmentation performance especially for complex object shape, by seamlessly integrating gradient vector flow and prior directional information. Since the prior directional information is provided by manual line drawing, it can be inconvenient for inexperienced users who might have difficulty in finding the best place to draw the directional lines to achieve the best segmentation performance. This paper describes a method to overcome this problem by automatically extracting centerlines to guide the users for providing the right directional information. Experimental results on synthetic and real images demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

Contour is a powerful tool of analyzing spatial characteristics of geographical factors.The traditional handdrawing style had been eliminated and much professional mapping software had its own flaws and shortcomings as well.So,how to integrate the functions and advantages of various mapping software together so as to improve the efficiency of contour mapping is an issue which is worth of studying.This paper introduced a new method of plotting contours that adopts VB as developing-platform and utilizes OLE technology to carry out integrated development with MapInfo and Surfer.This method had been applied widely during the protection and administration of ecological environment of mining area.The contours plotted in this way are relatively precise and it has greatly improved the efficiency of plotting actions.

Individual pig object detection algorithm based on Gaussian mixture model

The background models are crucially important for the object extraction for moving objects detection in a video.The Gaussian mixture model(GMM)is one of popular methods in the background models.Gaussian mixture model which applied to the pig target detection has some shortcomings such as low efficiency of algorithm,misjudgment points and ghosts.This study proposed an improved algorithm based on adaptive Gaussian mixture model,to overcome the deficiencies of the traditional Gaussian mixture model in pig object detection.Based on Gaussian mixture background model,this paper introduced two new parameters of video frames m and T0.The Gaussian distribution was scanned once every m frames,the excessive Gaussian distribution was deleted to improve the convergence speed of the model.Meanwhile,using different learning rates to suppress ghosts,a higher decreasing learning rate was adopted to accelerate the background modeling before T_(0),the background model would become stable as the time continued and a smaller learning rate could be used.In order to maintain a stable background and reduce noise interference,a fixed learning rate after T_(0) was used.Results of experiments indicated that this algorithm could quickly build the initial background model,detect the moving target pigs,and extract the complete contours of the target pigs’.The algorithm is characterized by good robustness and adaptability.

Mathematical Model of the Identical Slope Surface

The formation of the identical slope surface and the method of construction are discussed. On the basement of building the parameter equation of variable-radius circle family envelope, the frequently used parameter equation of the identical slope surface of the top of taper moving along column helix, horizental arc and line is built. The equation can be used to construct the identical slope surface’s contours, gradient lines and three dimensional figures correctly.

Non-uniform rationa1 B-spline (NURBS) curves and sdrices are becomingincreasingly widespread. ’The authors have explored G1 continuity condition between adja-cent NURBS surface patches along common boundary curve. This paper presents a G2continuity condition between adjacent NURBS patches along common quadratic boundarycurve and deduces a specific algorithm for control Points and weights of NURBS patch.For making another NURBS patch and one given NURBS patch to attain G2, according toalgorithms condition, one can adjust another patch control ponts and weights. It is muchmore convenient for engineers to apply.

Since regular surface is defined by a mapping from 2-D parameter plane to 3-D space, trimming of NURBS surface is equivalent to changing a valid parameter region ofthe surface with the same mapping. In this paper, by presenting a rigid and comprehensi-ble definition of union, difference and intersection of two intersecting loops in the parame-ter region of NURBS surface, and by working out the corresponding algorithm, a rebui1d-ing algorithm of the valid parameter region of NURBS surface is obtained.

Contour-Based Image Segmentation Using Selective Visual Attention

In many medical image segmentation applications identifying and extracting the region of interest (ROI) accurately is an important step. The usual approach to extract ROI is to apply image segmentation methods. In this paper, we focus on extracting ROI by segmentation based on visual attended locations. Chan-Vese active contour model is used for image segmentation and attended locations are determined by SaliencyToolbox. The implementation of the toolbox is extension of the saliency map-based model of bottom-up attention, by a process of inferring the extent of a proto-object at the attended location from the maps that are used to compute the saliency map. When the set of regions of interest is selected, these regions need to be represented with the highest quality while the remaining parts of the processed image could be represented with a lower quality. The method has been successfully tested on medical images and ROIs are extracted.

Adaptive Region Construction for Efficient Use of Radio Propagation Maps

The efficient construction of contours of a radio propagation map is crucial in using radio propagation maps in a number of real-time communication and network applications. In this research work, we first propose an adaptive region construction (ARC) technique capable of constructing contours of different resolutions of a radio propagation map. Next, the process of implementing the ARC technique for real-time execution on a GPU is presented. The drawbacks of the first implementation using only the global memory are discussed, and optimization techniques to improve the performance are discussed and implemented. Simulations are performed with varying sizes of radio propagation maps, and the suitability of the ARC technique for real-time operation is presented. A speedup of 25× is achieved with the shared version of the GPU compared to the sequential CPU implementation. Also, the contour constructed using the ARC technique is compared to that constructed using the convex hull approach demonstrating the higher accuracy of the contour from the ARC technique.
