Using Finite Element and contour method to Evaluate Residual Stress in Thick Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Welded by Electron Beam Welding

This work was to reveal the residual stress profile in electron beam welded Ti-6Al-4V alloy plates（50 mm thick） by using finite element and contour measurement methods.A three-dimensional finite element model of 50-mmthick titanium component was proposed,in which a column–cone combined heat source model was used to simulate the temperature field and a thermo-elastic–plastic model to analyze residual stress in a weld joint based on ABAQUS *** the uncertainty of welding simulation,the computation was calibrated by experimental data of contour measurement *** test and simulated results show that residual stresses on the surface and inside the weld zone are significantly different and present a narrow and large gradient feature in the weld *** peak tensile stress exceeds the yield strength of base materials inside weld,which are distinctly different from residual stress of the thin Ti-6Al-4V alloy plates presented in references before.

Internal residual stress measurement on linear friction welding of titanium alloy plates with contour method

The internal residual stress within a TC 17 titanium alloy joint welded by linear friction welding （LFW） was measured by the contour method, which is a relatively new and destructive technique to obtain a full map of internal residual stress. The specimen was first cut into two parts; the out-of-plane displacement contour formed by the release of the residual stress was then measured; finally, taking the measured contour of the cut plane as the boundary conditions, a linear elastic finite element analysis was carried out to calculate the corresponding distribution of residual stress normal to the cut plane. The internal stress distribution of the TC 17 titanium alloy LFWjoint was also analyzed. The results show that the tensile residual stress in the TC17 LFW weld is mainly present within a region about 12 mm from the weld centerline; the peak tensile residual stress occurs at the weld centerline and reaches 360 MPa （about one third of the yield strength of TC17 alloy）; within the weld zone of the TC17 LFW weld, the through-thickness stress is not uniform, and the internal stress is larger than that near the top or bottom surface.

Research on Residual Stress Measurement of Magnesium Alloy Cabin Castings

Owing to the nonuniform wall thickness and complex internal structure,the measurement of the residual stress on magnesium alloy cabin castings is complex and difficult extremely,and thus seldom research has focused on the residual stress of magnesium alloy *** this paper,the blind-hole method,the X-ray diffraction(XRD)method,and the contour method are used to conduct comprehensive and systematic residual stress tests for a magnesium alloy cabin *** results show that the residual stress on the surface of the casting obtained by the blind-hole method is between-20.03 MPa and-71.03 MPa,the residual stress obtained by the XRD method is between-26.01 MPa and-87.11 MPa,while the residual stress obtained by the contour method is between-45.89 MPa and 76.87 *** study can lay a basis for the subsequent research of magnesium alloy cabin castings,and provide a reference for the residual stress test of magnesium alloy castings.
