Hydrographic observations collected by conductivity-temperature-depth（CTD） and instrumented elephant seals on the Prydz Bay continental shelf during 2012 and 2013 are used to characterize the intrusion of modified circumpolar deep *** a regular occurrence,modified circumpolar deep water（MCDW） intrudes onto the shelf mainly between 150–300 m layer of 73°–75°E and then turns southeast affected by the cyclonic gyre of the Prydz *** southernmost point of the warm water signal is captured on the east front of Amery Ice shelf during March *** terms of vertical distribution,MCDW occupies the central layer of 200 m with about 100 m thickness in the austral summer,but when to winter transition,the layer of MCDW deepens with time on the central shelf.

Measurements ofpH, total alkalinity （TA）, partial pressure of CO2 （pCO2） and air-sea CO2 flux （FCO2） were conducted for the inner continental shelf of the East China Sea （ECS） during August 2011. Variations in pCO2 distribution and FCO2 magnitude during the construction of the Three Gorges Dam （TGD）（2003-2009）, and the potential effects of the TGD on the air-sea CO2 exchange were examined. Results showed that the ECS acts as an overall CO2 sink during summer, with pCO2 ranging from 107 to 585 *** and an average FCO2 of -6.39 mmol/（m2·d）. Low pCO2 （〈350 μatm） levels were observed at the central shelf （28°-32°N, 123°-125.5°E） where most CO2-absorption occurred. HighpCO2 （〉420 μatm） levels were found in the Changjiang estuary and Hangzhou Bay which acted as the main CO2 source. A negative relationship between pCO2 and salinity （R2=0.722 0） in the estuary zone indicated the predominant effect of the Changjiang Diluted Water （CDW） on the seawater CO2 system, whereas a positive relationship （R2=0.744 8） in the offshore zone revealed the influence of the Taiwan Current Warm Water （TCWW）. Together with the historical data, our results indicated that the CO2 sink has shown a shift southwest while FC02 exhibited dramatic fluctuation during the construction of the TGD, which is located in the middle reaches of the Changjiang. These variations probably reflect fluctuation in the Changjiang runoff, nutrient import, phytoplankton productivity, and sediment input, which are likely to have been caused by the operations of the TGD. Nevertheless, the potential influence of the TGD on the CO2 flux in the ECS is worthy of further study.

This paper establishes techniques and methods to determine a variety of boundaries associated with 200 nautical miles beyond the continental shelf. The methods, based on topography, slope and second-deriv- ative profile integrated analysis, are now able to identify automatically the foot of the continental slope （FOS）. By analyzing the sedimentary profile, the points of 1% sediment thickness are recognized. Through the intersection, cut, deletion and mergence calculation of the extrapolated data set of fLxed-point series, the method succeeds in generating automatically the extrapolated boundaries, including the FOS＋60 M line, the 350 M line, and the 2500 m＋100 M line. In addition, based on the automatic analysis of the topographic profile, it can be applied to determine rapidly the points of maximum water depth. Taking the northern Okinawa Trough （OT） as an example, these methods are used to calculate and examine the boundaries in- cluded in the Submission by the People＇s Republic of China Concerning the Outer Limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 Nautical miles in Part of the East China Sea （ECS）; the boundaries thus derived have a solid scientific and rational basis.

In the surface sediment samples collected from 7 transects in the continental shelf region off Karaikkal,Parangipettai,Cuddalore-SIPCOT,Cheyyur,Chennai,Tammenapatanam and Singarayakonda in the southeast coast of India at the depths of 30m,50m,75m,100m,150m and 200m,the petroleum hydrocarbon(PHC) varied from 1.582μg/g(Karaikkal 150m) to 4.065 ug/g (Cheyyur 75m).The correlation between PHC and organic carbon content was not significant. However PHC and mean particle diameter showed significant negative correlation(P<0.01).In Singarayakonda transect,the nature of the sediment was silty at all the depths(except 30m - coarse sand) and consequently the average concentrations of PHC and total organic carbon(TOC)(2.844μg/g and 2.864 mg/g) were *** is attributed to the influence of rivers Krishna,Gundlakamma, Polleru and Uppuino which discharge more sediment besides agricultural runoff and urban sewage. The average concentration of PHC in Cheyyur,Cuddalore - SIPCOT and Parangipettai transects was 2.818,2.332 and 2.324μg/g *** is attributed to the influence of rivers in these areas(Palar, Gaddillam,Uppanar,Vellar and Coleroon) besides Kalpakkam Atomic Power Station and industrial discharges from *** the Canonical Analysis of Principal Coordinates(CAP) plot,the first axis explained about 51.84%of the variability and the second 18.67%(totally the first two axes explained 70.51%of the variability).The canonical correlation values of first 2 axes were 0.7497 and 0.5865 *** PHC level observed in the present study was found to be lower than the levels reported from other *** the coastal region in the study area continues to grow in all the dimensions economically,continuous monitoring of PHC is quite essential especially the three fractions pyrolytic,petrogenic and biogeneic fractions of PHC.

Ocean acidification(OA)is a persistent challenge for humans and is predicted to have deleterious effects on marine organisms,especially marine calcifiers such as coral and *** foraminifera is an important component of sediment in the continental shelf,while little is known about the impact of ocean acidification on benthic foraminifera both at the community and individual level and associated calcium carbonate *** conducted eight months continued culture experiment under the scenario of 400,800,1200 and 1600 ppm pCO_(2)gradients on living benthic foraminifera from four stations in the continental shelf of the West Pacific *** results showed OA had a negative effect on the abundance of benthic *** contrast,the diversity increased roughly under OA conditions implying OA might stimulate the emergence of rare species and promote community diversity to some *** addition,we confirmed that the offshore area wasn’t the refuge for benthic foraminifera while the nearshore one had more resistance to moderate *** species Protelphidium tuberculatum was the dominant species occupying on average 75%in all treatments and its shell diameter,weight and thickness showed a decrease,indicating the decrease of calcification of benthic foraminifera.A relationship between the weight of *** and pCO_(2)(R^(2)=0.96)was *** on the present work,calcareous benthic foraminifera deposited 8.57104 t calcium carbonate per year and this might reduce by nearly half and 90%under 800 and 1200 ppm scenarios,which indicates a biocalcification crisis under ongoing *** work shows an analogy for palaeoceanic OA and also provides new insights into the sediment of calcium carbonate in the future.

To improve the understanding of the relationship between silica source and organic matter accumulation,the origin of silica and its implications for organic matter enrichment in the Upper OrdovicianLower Silurian(O_(3)w-S_(1)l)black shale in western Hubei Province in the middle Yangtze area,were investigated through geochemical and petrological *** results show that the O_(3)w-S_(1)l black shale is mainly composed of five lithofacies with varying graptolite abundance,total organic carbon(TOC),and silica *** silica and terrigenous siliciclastic input constitute the main silica sources in O_(3)w-S_(1)l black shale and they exhibit an upward inverse variation trend interpreted to be related to sea-level ***,with the increase in biogenic silica content or decrease in terrigenous siliciclastic input,TOC values in black shale initially rise and then fall,which is different from originally expected simple linear *** infer that organic matter enrichment and the distribution of silica from different origins are controlled by sea-level changes and variations in terrigenous input in a continental shelf with little hydrothermal *** environment with appropriate sea level and terrigenous input should be most favorable for organic matter accumulation,rather than one with excessive high sea level and less terrigenous input.

X-ray fluorescence scanning with synchrotron radiation was performed to study sediment core records of floods in Amur Bay,Sea of *** of 3–8 mm with abnormally low bromine content were formed by the Razdolnaya River discharge to the central part of the bay during extreme floods,accompanied by severe storms at *** conditions in the region are typical for periods of deep tropical cyclones(typhoons),to which the distinguished interlayers were compared on the *** approach was made possible thanks to the high rate of sedimentation in the bay(3–5 mm/a) and low bioturbation of sediments under anoxic conditions.

The ridge like seafloor highs with various geological origins can be classed into mid-ocean ridges,transverse ridges related to transform faults,hot spot/mantle plume originated ridges,microcontinent rifted from major continent,intra-plate arc formed by interaction of two oceanic plates,and tectonic ridges uplifted by later tectonic *** ridges moved towards the convergent continental margins along with the underlain plate drifting and formed so-called accreted ridges commonly trending at a high angle to the continental *** divergent continental margins,the continental crusts were extended and thinned accompanying with magmatism,which formed high terrains protruding or parallel to the coastal *** ridges worldwide have various origins and the crustal thicknesses and structures of them are *** crusts beneath the microcontinents,and the transverse ridges along the transform margin,and the seafloor highs beside the passive continental margins are continental,while the crusts of other ridges are *** 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea （UNCLOS） has classed the seafloor highs worldwide into three legal categories,namely oceanic ridges,submarine ridges and submarine elevations,for the purpose to delineate the outer limit of the coastal States＇ continental shelf beyond 200 nautical *** define the categories of the legal seafloor highs to which the ridges with various geological origins belong,the continuities in morphology and geology including the rock types,crustal structures,origins and tectonic setting of the ridges and the coastal States＇ land mass with its submerged prolongation should be taken into *** a ridge is continuous both in morphology and geology with the coastal States＇ land mass and its submerged prolongation,it is a submarine elevation stipulated in Article *** it is discontinuous in morphology,the ridge should be regarded as oceanic *** a ridge is continuous in morphology
