Tightly integrating actuation,computation,and sensing in soft materials allows soft robots to respond autonomously to their environments.However,fusing these capabilities within a single soft module in an effi-cient,programmable,and compatible way is still a significant challenge.Here,we introduce a strategy for integrating actuation,computation,and sensing capabilities in soft origami.Unified and plug-and-play soft origami modules can be reconfigured into diverse morphologies with specific functions or reprogrammed into a variety of soft logic circuits,similar to LEGO bricks.We built an untethered autonomous soft turtle that is able to sense stimuli,store data,process information,and perform swimming movements.The function multiplexing and signal compatibility of the origami minimize the number of soft devices,thereby reducing the complexity and redundancy of soft robots.Moreover,this origami also exhibits strong damage resistance and high durability.We envision that this work will offer an effective way to readily create on-demand soft robots that can operate in unknown environments.

The sudden surge of various applications poses great challenges to the computation capability of mobile devices.To address this issue,computation offloading to multi-access edge computing(MEC)was proposed as a promising paradigm.This paper studies partial computation offloading scenario by considering time delay and energy consumption,where the task can be splitted into several blocks and computed both in local devices and MEC,respectively.Since the formulated problem is a nonconvex problem,this paper proposes an ant colony-based algorithm to achieve the suboptimal solution.Specifically,the proposed method first establish a multi-user one-MEC scenario,in which user devices are able to offload some part of the task to MEC server.Then,it develops an ant colony-based algorithm to decide the offloading parts and allocation strategy of MEC resources to minimize system cost.Finally,simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of system cost and demonstrate that it outperforms other existing methods.

Writing has often been put forth as one indicator of civilization.This correspondence dovetails with the even broader cross-species expectation that the degrees of social complexity and levels of computational communication should closely correlate.Although in a general sense across human cooperative arrangements,a basic relationship between these variables undoubtedly exists,more detailed and fine-grained analyses indicate important axes of variability.Here,our focus is on prehispanic Mesoamerica and the means of computation and communication employed over more than three millennia(ca.1500 BCE-1520 CE).We take a multiscalar and diachronic analytical frame,in which we look at 30 central places,six macroregions,and Mesoamerica as whole.By unraveling elements of“social complexity”,and decoupling computation from communication,we illustrate that institutional differences in governance had a marked effect on the specific modes and technologies through which prehispanic Mesoamerican peoples communicated across time and space.Demographic and spatial scale,though relevant,do not alone determine time/space diversity in media of computational communication.This article is part of the theme issue“Evolution of Collective computational Abilities of(Pre)Historic Societies”.

Quantum computation has attracted much attention from both academia and the public due to its great achievements. Along with its fast development and increasing investment, a series of problems are raised. For example, can quantum supremacy be realized? Recently, several results have been reported to address the problem of sampling random circuits, accompanied by classical improvements [1-3]. Another problem worthy of note is how to use a quantum computer. Irrelevant to specific problems that can be solved by a quantum computer, this is actually a problem about how many users can conveniently access quantum computation resources.

In software-defined networking(SDN),controllers are sinks of information such as network topology collected from switches.Organizations often like to protect their internal network topology and keep their network policies private.We borrow techniques from secure multi-party computation(SMC)to preserve the privacy of policies of SDN controllers about status of routers.On the other hand,the number of controllers is one of the most important concerns in scalability of SMC application in SDNs.To address this issue,we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the number of SDN controllers while considering their reliability in SMC operations.We use Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II(NSGA-II)to determine the optimal number of controllers,and simulate SMC for typical SDNs with this number of controllers.Simulation results show that applying the SMC technique to preserve the privacy of organization policies causes only a little delay in SDNs,which is completely justifiable by the privacy obtained.

Noninvasive X-ray imaging of nanoscale three-dimensional objects,such as integrated circuits(ICs),generally requires two types of scanning:ptychographic,which is translational and returns estimates of the complex electromagnetic field through the IC;combined with a tomographic scan,which collects these complex field projections from multiple angles.Here,we present Attentional Ptycho-Tomography(APT),an approach to drastically reduce the amount of angular scanning,and thus the total acquisition time.APT is machine learning-based,utilizing axial self-Attention for Ptycho-Tomographic reconstruction.APT is trained to obtain accurate reconstructions of the ICs,despite the incompleteness of the measurements.The training process includes regularizing priors in the form of typical patterns found in IC interiors,and the physics of X-ray propagation through the IC.We show that APT with×12 reduced angles achieves fidelity comparable to the gold standard Simultaneous Algebraic Reconstruction Technique(SART)with the original set of angles.When using the same set of reduced angles,then APT also outperforms Filtered Back Projection(FBP),Simultaneous Iterative Reconstruction Technique(SIRT)and SART.The time needed to compute the reconstruction is also reduced,because the trained neural network is a forward operation,unlike the iterative nature of these alternatives.Our experiments show that,without loss in quality,for a 4.48×93.2×3.92µm^(3) IC(≃6×10^(8) voxels),APT reduces the total data acquisition and computation time from 67.96 h to 38 min.We expect our physics-assisted and attention-utilizing machine learning framework to be applicable to other branches of nanoscale imaging,including materials science and biological imaging.

Recently,initiatives to integrate Internet of Things(IoT)technologies into smart buildings have attracted extensive attention for improving the performance of buildings and the comfort of occupants.However,the amount of data generated by IoT devices remains a challenge to the building management systems(BMSs)in terms of intensity and complexity.Different from cloud computing and edge computing,we propose a computation sharing architecture in smart buildings to incentivize idle computing devices(ICDs,sellers)to offload computational tasks for the BMS(buyer).In this paper,we design a hierarchical game model,consisting of a Stackelberg game and a Cournot game,to achieve a dynamic increase in computational capacity for the BMS.To guarantee the utility of BMS and ICDs,the Stackelberg game model is built to analyze the interactions between BMS and ICDs.Then,the Cournot game model is presented to formulate the internal competition among multiple ICDs.Under the premise of the subgame perfect Nash equilibrium,the BMS can quote the optimal pricing strategy,and the ICDs can share the corresponding optimal amount of computing resources.Finally,the simulation results show that the BMS’s computational capacity is enhanced on-demand,and each participant in the game obtains maximal utility.

With the dawning of the Internet of Everything(IoE) era, more and more novel applications are being deployed. However, resource constrained devices cannot fulfill the resource-requirements of these applications. This paper investigates the computation offloading problem of the coexistence and synergy between fog computing and cloud computing in IoE by jointly optimizing the offloading decisions, the allocation of computation resource and transmit power. Specifically, we propose an energy-efficient computation offloading and resource allocation(ECORA) scheme to minimize the system cost. The simulation results verify the proposed scheme can effectively decrease the system cost by up to 50% compared with the existing schemes, especially for the scenario that the computation resource of fog computing is relatively small or the number of devices increases.

A mixed finite element method combining an iso-parametric Q 2-P 1 element and an isoparametric P^-Pi element is developed for the computation of multiple cavities in incompressible nonlinear elasticity. The method is analytically proved to be locking-free and convergent, and it is also shown to be numerically accurate and efficient by numerical experiments. Furthermore, the newly developed accurate method enables us to find an interesting new bifurcation phenomenon in multi-cavity growth.
