A marine sediment core obtained from a methane seepage site off the northern coast of Irelandwas analysed, at 3 depths, for catabolic genes associated with the aerobic and anaerobic degradation of aromatic compounds. Catabolic gene copy numbers varied through the core peaking at 2.1 meters below sediment surface (mbsf)-just above the sulphate boundary. Beyond the sulphate boundary gene copy numbers fell considerably, suggesting the boundary may be a critical factor in the degradation of aromatic compounds within marine sediments. At the 2.1 mbsf depth our data also suggest that known benzoyl CoA reductase utilizing bacteria are readily detectable.

The depletion of fossil diesel fuels, global warming concerns and strict limits on regulated pollutant emissions are encouraging the use of renewable fuels. Biodiesel is the most used renewable fuel in compression ignition (CI) engine. The majority of literature agrees that the particulate matter (PM), unburnt total hydrocarbons (THC) and carbon dioxide (CO) emission from biodiesel are lower than from conventional diesel fuel. One of the most important reasons for this is the oxygen content of the biodiesel. This induces a more complete and cleaner combustion process. In addition to this the absence of aromatic compounds in biodiesel leads to particulate matter reduction with respect to diesel fuel. The potential emission benefits induced by the presence of oxygen in fuel molecules has increased the interest in using the bio-alcohols fuel blends in CI engines such as ethanol. Although alcohols are more suitable for blending with diesel fuel, properties like lubricity, viscosity, stability, heating value and cetane number of diesel-alcohol (Diesohol) still require improvement. One of the techniques is addition of biodiesel which can improve all of these properties forming diesel-biodiesel-alcohol (ternary) blends. The blends of diesel-biodiesel-ethanol can be used in the existing CI engines without any major modifications and most significant result of using this blend is the lower emission with almost the same performance as of diesel fuel alone. The present study focused on investigation of performance and combustion characteristics of ternary fuel blend in DI diesel engine operating at different injection opening pressure (IOP). The different injection opening pressures are: 180 bar, 200 bar and 220 bar.

Using the method of IR spectroscopy it was ascertained that in pectinates and alginates of polyvalent metals the coordination bonds between cations Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and the oxygen atoms of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, pyranose cycle and glycosidic linkage of polyuronides, the water molecules are formed. It was also ascertained that Cu2+ cations form asymmetrical structures with carboxyl groups of polyuronides (monodentate ligands) and cations of other metals—symmetrical structures with carboxyl groups of polyuronides (bidentate ligands).

New metal complexes of N-benzyl-N-nitrosohy-droxylamine (BNHA) are isolated and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV-VIS spectroscopy. Spectrophotometric titration of aqueous solutions of BNHА by salts of some transition metals allowed to calculate the composition and formation constants of the metal complexes. The crystal structure of Cu (BNHА)2 is studied by X-ray diffraction. The Cu atom is coordinated by four O atoms of two bidentate ligands, which close 5-membered chelate rings. The N-O (1.306 ? - 1.320 ?) and N-N (1.274?? and 1.275? ) bond lengths indicate that π electrons are delocalized over the chelating groups. Complexes form stacks with intermolecular Cu…N contacts equal to 3.118?? and 3.306 ?.

In the last years the development of new luminescent materials was grow highly in order to find efficient materials with low cost of processing. In this way the organic luminescent materials have special attention because its special characteristics, like antenna effect, low temperature processing, possibility to make translation to polymeric and flexible compounds. In this work luminescent powders of TTA:Eu3+ by sol-gel method were synthesized in order to define the synthesis parameters of the highest luminescence. The temperatures of heat treatment were 80°C, 100°C, 200°C and the concentration of Europium where 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% mol (TTA-10Eu, TTA-20Eu, TTA-30Eu, and TTA-40Eu). Fourier Transform Infrared Rays analysis (FTIR) and emission luminescence measures, the best conditions of synthesis were obtained at 40% mol of Europium and 80°C of heat treatment, at 272 nm of excitation. All the samples present the corresponded Eu3+ ion transitions the 5D0 → 7FJ (J = 0, 1, and 2). This confirms the great possibilities of these materials for optoelectronic applications.

The polarized absorption spectra of cobalt(II) in trans-CoCl2(H2O)4.2H2O provides important information about the electronic structure. Semi-empirical calculation of the crystal-field levels of the cobalt(II) with D4h point group symmetry in CoCl2(H2O)4.2H2O are carried out, leading to a good agreement between the theoretical and experimental energy levels.

Volatile flavor components in foods are the key quality parameters. The researchers conducted in-depth research on sesame oil, peanut oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, sesame paste and peanut butter, etc. However, there is no comprehensive summary about the flavor of roasted oilseeds and their products. The occurrence and the formation mechanisms of the main volatile flavor substances,and the impacts of processing factors are discussed in this review, which may provide references for further research on volatile flavor compounds, identification and evaluation of specific products and development of new products.

Essential oils from newly produced (2017) and previous season crop (2016) of cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) seeds collected from local farmers in Dongla area, north Sudan were extracted and analyzed to determine the effect of storage period on volatile oil yield and quality. The essential oil was extracted using hydro distillation method. Identification of the volatile compounds was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Results revealed that oil obtained from cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) was pale yellow. With respect to oil characteristics, the specific gravity, refractive index, acid value, ester value and other quality characters were not significantly different between the stored and newly harvested seeds. Thirty-eight compounds were separated and identified in cumin seeds essential oil in both seasons with some minor differences in some components between 2016 and 2017 samples. Major effective components of cumin seeds volatile oil were cumin alcohol (4-isopropylbenzyl alcohol), cumin aldehydes as 4-Isopropylbenzaldehyd and 7,7-dimethylbicyclo (4.1.0) hept-3-ene-4-carbaldehyde known as carenal, terpinenes as γ-terpinene and α-terpinene (1,4-Cyclohexadiene, 1-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl) and 1,3-cyclohexadine-1-methanol, 4(1-methethyle)-), β-pinene, o-cymene and p-menthadienol in both stored and newly harvested samples. Differences between the samples season wise were very minor with respect to type of volatile components but percentage oil yield was largely decreased by storage period.
