Most of the commercial white LED lamps use blue chip coated with yellow emitting phosphor. YAG:Ce3+ phosphor is coated on blue chip to obtain white light. Though this is commercially successful, there are several drawbacks such as “halo effect”, poor colour rendition, etc. In recent years several efforts have been made to improve LED lamp performance. In this paper modifica-tion of YAG:Ce phosphor for improving CRI, by introducing Gd3+, Pr3+ or Tb3+ at Ce3+ site is reported.

A cross sectional survey was conducted in three major poultry markets at Enugu Urban area of Enugu State, South Eastern, Nigeria, to determine the prevalence of antimicrobial residues in commercial broiler birds using Premi? Test Kit. Antimicrobials generally due to their availability over the counter and non-enforcement of legislature on irrational use are often abused in both veterinary and medical practice in most developing countries. The misuse and overuse of these drugs lead to deposition of violative levels of antimicrobial residues in animal tissues meant for human consumption with several health consequences when consumed. Premi? Test like all other microbiological tests is based on the principle of inhibition and was able to detect antibiotic residues in 42 (60%) of the 70 sampled commercial birds from three major poultry markets in the study area. It detected also residues in 90 out of the 280 different organ matrices made up of 70 samples of each organ, of which Kidney was the highest at 48.6%, Gizzard (30.1%), liver (25.8%), and muscle (24.3%) in that order. No association was found between the occurrence of antibiotic residues and the location of the poultry markets sampled at P < 0.05 while a strong association between antibiotic residues and the organ type at

Balantidium coli is a zoonotic protozoan parasite, and pork is considered the major source of Balantidium infection in humans. Transmission is direct and commonly occurs through the ingestion of water and food, especially vegetables, contaminated with infectious cysts. Ingestion of meat contaminated, with faecal material during the evisceration process, can represent a potential risk of B. coli transmission. In order to determine the rate of B. coli infection in pigs regularly slaughtered at abattoirs in the province of Messina (Sicily, Italy), faecal samples of 242 pigs (122 commercial hybrid and 120 Nero Siciliano pigs) were collected and evaluated by standard methods for the presence of trophozoites and/or cysts. A total of 105 of the commercial hybrid (86.06%), but only 44 of the Nero Siciliano (36.66%) pigs, were identified as positive for B. coli infection. The results obtained, may be linked to the type of farming employed.

Effect of Enzymes on the Quality of Beer/Wort Developed from Proportions of Sorghum Adjuncts

The effect of commercial enzymes on quality of wort developed from replacement of malted barley (100%) with sorghum as adjunct 50%, 60%, 70%, and 80% was investigated for pH, colour, filteration rate, extract asin, dry extract, viscosity, total soluble nitrogen and free amino nitrogen. The wort pH (5.6 - 6.0) is relatively stable with no significant changes at all levels of replacements. The colour is lighter with increment in proportion of the sorghum as it appears as colour diluents. Wort filteration rate is reduced with the sorghum replacement and the wort produced tends to be turbid which affects the utilization of the wort. The total soluble nitrogen and free amino nitrogen value increased with the use of commercial enzymes while the viscosity decreases with enzymes. The use of ceremix and cereflo have been found to be relatively more effective in the preparation of beer wort as observed for the result obtained in proportions of sorghum and malt barley. The use of high percentage sorghum as adjunct with commercial enzymes are found to be useful in production of high quality wort with low cost and profitability.

We analysed a DNA sample from a father and child who were both heterozygous for a 7 base pair insertion in the MEST gene differentially-methylated promoter region, previously shown by PCR analysis of bisulphite-treated DNA to be on the methylated allele in the unaffected father and the unmethylated allele in the affected child. PCR from genomic DNA was then carried out using a commercial PCR kit with its recommended initial DNA denaturation step of 2 minutes. Subsequent sequence analysis showed that only the non-methylated allele had been amplified, the father appearing to be homozygous normal and the child appearing to have a homozygous 7 b.p. insertion. The PCR protocol was then modified in order to use a longer DNA denaturation stage prior to the addition of the polymerase enzyme. Upon doing so, both the methylated and non-methylated alleles were then identifiable by sequencing with the mutation appearing in its expected heterozygous form. These results highlight the fact that the methylation status of DNA can affect the denaturation rate prior to PCR and result in allele drop-out, showing that the standard protocols of commercial kits should be used with caution when working with methylated regions of DNA.
