The monodisperse polystyrene spheres are assembled into the colloidal crystal on the glass substrate by vertical deposition method, which is aimed at the so-called photonic crystal applications. The structural information of the bulk colloidal crystal is crucial for understanding the crystal growth mechanism and devel- oping the various applications of colloidal crystal. Small-angle X-ray scattering （SAXS） technique was used to obtain the bulk structure of the colloidal crystal at Beamline lW2A of BSRF. It is found that the SAXS pattern is sensitive to the relative orientation between the colloidal sample and the incident X-ray direction. The crystal lattice was well distinguished and determined by the SAXS data.

The macropore silica colloidal crystal templates were assembled orderly in a capillary glass tube by an applied electric field method to control silica deposition. In order to achieve the photonic band gap （PBG） of colloidal crystal in optical communication waveband, the diameter of silica microspheres is selected by Bragg diffraction formula. An experiment was designed to test the bandgap of the silica crystal templates. This paper discusses the formation process and the close-packed fashion of the silica colloidal crystal templates was discussed. The surface morphology of the templates was also analyzed. The results showed that the close-packed fashion of silica array templates was face-centered cubic （FCC） structure： The agreement is very good between the experimental data and the theoretical calculation.

Charged colloidal suspensions have been used as experimental models for the study of crystal nucleation. Here we propose that the technique of template-assisted colloidal self-assembly can be used to visualize the effects of defect propagation in atomic crystal films produced using epitaxial growth. Templates with periodic line defects were used to grow [100]-oriented three-dimensional photonic crystals by means of the template-assisted colloidal self-assembly method, aided by capillary and gravitational forces. The defect propagation in the [100]-oriented photonic crystal was observed using scanning electron microscopy, both at the surface of the crystal and on cleaved facets. This method is useful in the understanding of defect propagation in the growth of colloidal films on templates - and the same approach may also prove useful for the understanding of atomic crystal growth on substrates with defects. Additionally, the deliberate incorporation of line defects may prove valuable as a way of introducing waveguide channels into three-dimensional photonic crystals.

Bioinspired structural color particles with multi-layer graphene oxide encapsulated nanoparticle components

＜正＞Experimental results demonstrate that the band gap of colloidal crystal changes with boththe thickness of the crystal and the dispersiveness of the spheres. As the thickness decreasesfrom 1 mm, a red shift of band gap with a maximum proportional to the standard deviation ofspheres appears. Such maximum red shifts of 17 nm, 24 nm, 35 nm and more than 106 nmcorrespond to standard deviations of 3.2%, 3.6%, 4.5%, and 8.4% respectively Theseresults imply that in a thin cell, the spaces between the spheres are broad and bring about theappearance of rigorous face-centered-cubic single crystal, while in a thick cell, the narrowinner spaces can not compensate for the deviation of the spheres and makes the bonds of theface-centered-cubic crystal not the same. Especially when the colloidal crystal is assembled byspheres with a standard deviation of 8.4% in a thick cell, the novel phenomenon of a quasi-complete photonic band gap can be observed, which can be explained as an amorphous crystalin the continuous network model. The quasi-complete photonic band gap results from thedecrease of the symmetry of the lattice in the amorphous colloidal crystal.

Because of the unique features of spherical symmetry,angle-independency,good monodispersity,controllable components and morphologies,structural color particles(SCPs)have found great significances in various fields such as sensing,monitoring,biological assays,***,inspired by the melanosome-derived bright structural colors and the self-adhesivity of mussels,we present a kind of bioinspired SCPs assembled from polydopamine(PDA)-adhered multi-layer graphene oxide(GO)encapsulated silica nanoparticles(SNs).It is demonstrated that compared with traditional SCPs,the designed particles possess brighter and more vibrant structural colors,and no complicated modification is required during the functionalization process due to the abundant inherent functional groups of *** resultant SCPs are verified to be capable for direct hybridization chain reaction and multiplexed nucleic acid *** properties indicate the promising prospects of our designed SCPs.
