Sediment transportation and bed morphology reshaping in Yellow River Delta

The Yellow River Delta supports the ecological function as a typical estuarine foreshore wetland. The wetland area is changing greatly every year because of sediment deposition and erosion, which influences the wetland function tremendously. Application of environmental fluid dynamics code (EFDC) to the Yellow River Delta is on the basis of the mobile bed dynamic model and wetting-drying process. Careful calibration is carried out for the numerical model which is set up for the Yellow River Delta, the sediment transport process of the model is compatible to the Yellow River situation. The simulated bed elevation by considering the sediment deposition in the Mouth is particularly focused on, the numerical results are in agreement with the measured bed morphology within 1992 2000. Simulation in this paper indicates that most of the sediment deposited just out of the Mouth which makes the mouth move forward into the sea 2.5 km per year. This paper presents good results in simulation of varying sediment deposition and provides further methods to predict the future morphology and area of the Yellow River Delta.

For coarse grained soils,their principal stress directions may change when the water level of embankment dam varies instantaneously.In this loading case,the principal directions of stress and strain rate will become non-coaxial.In an effort to model non-coaxial behavior,a modified three-dimensional non-coaxial model is developed in the context of vertex yield(tangent plasticity) theory.Discrete Element Method(PFC) incorporating user-defined interparticle contact models is also employed to gain an insight into microscopic mechanism of non-coaxiality.The analysis focuses on non-coaxial behaviors under simple shear condition.It has been shown that the proposed non-coaxial model gives good predictions for non-coaxiality with reference to microscopic observations while the classical coaxial model fails to simulate the non-coaxial behaviors.In general,non-coaxiality as a result of the rotation of principal stress,is large at a small shear strain,and inclined to become negligible with increasing shear strain.For coarse grained soils,their non-coaxiality tends to largely depend on the initial normal pressure,where a larger degree of non-coaxiality can be observed at a higher pressure.

Safety systems, built on state-of-the-art technology, are essential for achieving acceptable levels of plant safety to minimize hazards to the reactor and the general public. The second shutdown system(SSS) as an engineered safety feature and a part of the reactor protection system(RPS) is a means for rapidly shutting down a nuclear reactor, keeping it in a subcritical state and serving as a backup to the first shutdown system(FSS). In this research, one SSS with two types of optimum chamber designs is proposed that take into account the main current characteristic features of the Tehran research reactor with improvements over earlier designs. They are based on a liquid neutron absorber injection that is preferably different, diverse, and independent from the FSS based on the rod drop mechanism. The major design characteristics of this SSS with two different chambers were investigated using MCNPX 2.6.0 code. The performed calculations showed that the designed SSS is a reliable shutdown system, assuring an appropriate shutdown margin and injection time, with no significant effects on the effective delayed neutron fraction while causing minimal variations to the core structure. Further, the reasonable financial cost and the prolongation of the operation cycle are additional advantages of this design.

The mass attenuation coefficients(l/q) for different parts(root, flower, stem, and leaf) of three medicinal aromatic plants(Teucrium chamaedrys L. subsp. sinuatum,Rheum ribes, and Chrysophthalmum montanum) were measured using an ^(241)Am photon source in a stable geometry and calculated using the Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport code System-extended(MCNPX) code and the WinXCOM program. The experimental and theoretical MCNPX and WinXCOM values exhibited good agreement.The measured mass attenuation coefficient values were then used to compute the effective atomic number(Z_(eff))and electron density(N_E) of the samples. The results reveal that S1-S(stem of Teucrium chamaedrys L. subsp. sinuatum) has the highest values of l/q and Zeff.

For a class of algebraic-geometric codes, a type of recurring relation is introduced on the syndrome sequence of an error vector. Then, a new majority yoting scheme is developed. By applying the generalized Berlekamp-Massey algorithm, and incorporating the majority voting scheme, an efficient decoding algorithm up to half the Feng-Rao bound is developed for a class of algebraic-geometric codes, the complexity of which is O （ γo1n2）, where n is the code length, and γ is the genus of curve. On different algebraic curves, the complexity of the algorithm can be lowered by choosing base functions suitably. For example, on Hermitian curves the complexity is O(n7/3.

A two-dimensional compressible MHD code has been used to numerically study the asymmetric driven reconnection processes in the vicinity of the magnetopause. The initial magnetic field configuration is assumed to be in a mechanical equilibrium state. The cases with identical temperatures ( Tm0/ Ts0 = 1 .0) and four different ratios of magnetic field strength ( Q = Bm0/Bs0 = 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5), and the case with Tm0/ Ts0 = 2.0 and O = 1.5 are investigated ( Bm0, Tm0 and B, Ts0 are the initial magnetic strength and temperature outside the current sheet on the magnetosphere and the mag-netosheath, respectively ). When the magnetic field on the magnetosheath side is set as southward, a recurrent formation of multiple magnetic bubbles with various scales occurs under the action of the inward plasma flow imposed at the left and right boundaries. In the simulation, some bubbles coalesce into a bigger one and then it is convected out of the simulation domain; the others are convected through the top boundary

Numerical study of point spread function of a fast neutron radiography system based on scintillating-fiber array

For a scintillating-fiber array fast-neutron radiography system,a point-spread-function computing model was introduced,and the simulation code was developed. The results of calculation show that fast-neutron radiographs vary with the size of fast neutron sources,the size of fiber cross-section and the imaging geometry. The results suggest that the following qualifications are helpful for a good point spread function: The cross-section of scintillating fibers not greater than 200 μm×200 μm,the size of neutron source as small as a few millimeters,the distance between the source and the scintillating fiber array greater than 1 m,and inspected samples placed as close as possible to the array. The results give suggestions not only to experiment considerations but also to the estimation of spatial resolution for a specific system.

In this work, the homomorphism of the classic linear block code in linear network coding for the case of binary field and its extensions is studied. It is proved that the classic linear error-control block code is homomorphic network error-control code in network coding. That is, if the source packets at the source node for a linear network coding are precoded using a linear block code, then every packet flowing in the network regarding to the source satisfies the same constraints as the source. As a consequence, error detection and correction can be performed at every intermediate nodes of multicast flow, rather than only at the destination node in the conventional way, which can help to identify and correct errors timely at the error-corrupted link and save the cost of forwarding error-corrupted data to the destination node when the intermediate nodes are ignorant of the errors. In addition, three examples are demonstrated which show that homomorphic linear code can be combined with homomorphic signature, McEliece public-key cryptosystem and unequal error protection respectively and thus have a great potential of practical utility.

Reversible variable length codes (RVLCs) have received much attention due to their excellent error resilient capabilities. In this paper, a novel construction algorithm for symmetrical RVLC is proposed which is independent of the Huffman code. The proposed algorithm's codeword assignment is only based on symbol occurrence probability. It has many advantages over symmetrical construction algorithms available for easy realization and better code performance. In addition, the proposed algorithm simplifies the codeword selection mechanism dramatically.
