Effects of Light on the Growth and clonal reproduction of Ligularia virgaurea

Ligularia virgaurea is a perennial herb that is widely distributed in the alpine meadow on the eastern Qinghai-Tibet plateau. We investigated the patterns of growth and reproduction of L. virgaurea under two contrasting levels of light conditions for two continuous growing seasons. Our results showed that the light effects on the maximum relative growth rate, the shoot weight ratio and the root weight ratio differed between the two growing seasons. L. virgaurea reproduced initially through rhizome in the second growing season, rather than sexual reproduction. The proportion of genets with clonal reproduction decreased under shaded conditions. A minimum genet size should be attained for clonal reproduction to begin under the shaded conditions. There was a positive linear relationship between clonal reproduction and genet size. Light level affected the allocation of total biomass to clonal structures, with less allocation under the full natural irradiance than under the shaded conditions. There seemed to be a trade-off between vegetative growth and clonal reproduction under the full natural irradiance, in terms of smaller relative growth rates of genets with clonal reproduction than those without clonal reproduction. L. virgaurea emphasized clonal reproduction under the full natural irradiance, while the plant emphasized vegetative growth under the shaded conditions.

Distribution patterns of clonal plants in the subnival belt of the Hengduan Mountains,SW China

clonal reproduction(i.e.,production of potentially independent offspring by vegetative growth)is thought to provide plants with reproductive ***,studying the evolution of clonal reproduction in local floras is crucial for our understanding of the adaptive mechanisms plants deploy in stressful environments such as alpine *** this study,we characterized clonal plant species in the subnival belt of the Hengduan Mountains(a global biodiversity hotspot with extreme environmental conditions in southwest China),in order to determine the effects of sex system,growth form,and elevational distribution on *** compiled clonality data of angiosperm species belonging to 41 families in the subnival belt of the Hengduan Mountains using published *** the 793 species recorded in the region,47.92%(380 species)are clonal *** sex system and growth form had significant effects on the occurrence of clonal reproduction:unisexual species(79.79%)were more likely to be clonal than bisexual species(43.63%),and herbaceous species(51.04%)were more likely to be clonal than woody species(16.67%).Compared with non-alpine-endemic species(44.60%),alpine-endemic species(58.33%)showed a significantly higher proportion of clonal *** logistic regression analysis showed a positive association between incidence of clonality and elevational range,indicating that species distributed at high elevations are more likely to be ***,the elevational gradients in clonality were contingent on sex system or growth *** study reveals that plants in the subnival belt of the Hengduan Mountains might optimize their probability of reproduction through clonal reproduction,a finding that adds to our growing understanding of plant's adaptations to harsh alpine environments.

Sexual selection often leads to evolution of conspicuous signals,raising the chances of attracting not only potential mates,but also *** lacertid lizards,ultraviolet(UV)-blue spots on flanks and shoulders represent such a *** level of correlation between male and female ornamen-tation is also known to ***,the phenotype of females may change in the absence of sexual *** tested this hypothesis on a complex of parthenogenetic and bisexual lizards of the genus *** evaluated area,counts,and chromatic properties(UV opponency,sat-uration)of UV-blue spots and compared the values between the clones and their bisexual progeni-tor *** found a fair heterogeneity between the parthenogenetic species,but no general tendency toward higher crypsis or *** of the parthenogens were not signifi-cantly different from the values of sexual females.A possible explanation is that the changes in se-lective forces associated with parthenogenetic reproduction are too small to affect the resulting pattern of selective pressures on the studied traits,or that the phenotypes of the parthenogens re-sult from the unique combination of parental genomes and are conserved by clonal reproduction.

Aims Climate warming and agricultural non-point source pollution both resulting from anthropogenic activities have been projected to affect plant reproduction and growth in wetlands *** order to predict and mitigate impacts of these anthropogenic activities,it is important to investigate how marsh plants respond to such environmental *** In this study,Bolboschoenus planiculmis,a tuberous sedge with a wide distribution range in Eurasia,was selected to examine the effect of air temperature changes(15,20 and 25°C over 24 h;20/10 and 30/15°C,day/night)and K supply(0,1,3,9 and 18 mmol/L)on its reproductive and growth traits in climate *** Findings We found that high constant temperatures(20 and 25°C)were more beneficial for tuberization of *** than high alternating temperatures(30/15°C),whereas aboveground biomass and shoot height were generally largest at high temperatures(30/15 and 25°C).Both reproductive and growth traits of *** showed hump-shaped relationships with K supply,with an optimum K concentration of around 1–3 mmol/*** combination of high constant temperatures and optimal K concentrations promoted reproductive traits the most,whereas the combination of higher temperatures(30/15 and 25°C)and K concentrations up to 9 mmol/L increased growth traits *** therefore conclude that population abundance of *** might benefit from global warming and the additional K supply.

Ten Tithonia diversifolia populations ranged from tropical to north subtropical climatic conditions,at altitudes of 76-2000 m in Yunnan of SW China,were sampled for the cytological studies. The results showed that chromosome numbers in all the 10 populations were 2n= 34 at metaphase, except some chimera cell type 2n = 32 or 68(less than 5%) in one population,and the basic chromosome number was x = *** karyotype variation at the diploid level of all the sampled populations presented some distinguishable cytological *** observations indicated that T. diversifolia presented a great capacity to grow clonally,and the clonal growth and branching process was especially common when adventitious roots and young shoots rapidly emerged from nodes on lower or the prostrate branches,which increased the density of the species *** has been obviously spread via the road network,which is dominating the geographical distribution in Yunnan of SW *** on the comprehensive comparison of karyotype variation,clonal proliferation characters,and the road networks spreading of ***,it could be concluded that the wide adaptability of *** might relate to its introduction sources,reproductive characters and genetic bases presented at variable chromosome characters.
