Based on the historical documents and measured data from the active-layer temperature （ALT） at A, B and C locations （4 670, 4 720 and 4 770 m a.s.l.） on Baishui Glacier No. 1, southeastern Tibetan Plateau, this paper analyzed spatial-temporal characteristics of ALT and its relationship with air temperature, and revealed the response of the active layer ice temperature towards climate change.in the monitoring period. The results showed that the influence of air temperature on the active-layer ice temperature had a hysteresis characteristic on the upper of ablation zone and the lag period in- creased gradually with the altitude elevating. The decrease amplitude of ALT in the accumulation pe- riod was far below its increase magnitude in the ablation period. At the same time, the mean glacier ice temperatures at 10 m depth （T10） in A, B and C profile were obviously higher than most of glaciers previously studied. Measured data also showed that the mean ALT increased by 0.24℃ in 0.5-8.5 m depth of the C profile during 28 years from July 11, 1982 to July 10, 2009.

Environmental and geomorphological processes in the mountainous areas of Eastern Siberia is strongly conditioned by the thermal state of permafrost(permanently frozen ground).However,the scarce data about climate and weak of permafrost study have led to the unclarity of mountain permafrost condition in this region.The increase in the mean annual air temperature over the past 50 years in the northeastern Siberia by various estimates is from 1.1℃to 3.3℃.So far,almost no information is available on the permafrost response to climatic change. in the region.The Kolyma Route(around 2000 km length),connecting Yakutsk and Magadan that crosses 5 climatic types and more than 10 permafrost landscapes,so it seems a suitable path for establishing basic(reference)monitoring sites.From 12 target boreholes,on the first stage 5 boreholes up to 30 m in depth were drilled and instrumented for measuring temperature at sites adjacent to weather stations in the Verkhoyansk Range from 283 to 1288 m a.s.l.Here we present conception,purpose,and methods for permafrost study project with first preliminary results from the highest weather station of the East Siberia Mountain.The following research about geophysical investigations,permafrost landscape description,mapping and spatial modelling,numerical computing,physical modelling of permafrost thickness might be initiated by the Eastern Siberia Permafrost Transect(ESPT)-project.

Spatiotemporal Variability in Extreme Temperature Events in an Arid-Semiarid Region of China and Their Teleconnections with Large-Scale Atmospheric Circulation

With a warming climate,temperature extremes have been a main global issue in recent decades due to their potential influence on the sustainable development of human life and natural ecosystems.In this study,12 indicators of extreme temperature events are used to evaluate the spatiotemporal distribution,periodic structure and teleconnections with large-scale atmospheric circulation in Xinjiang,Northwest China by combining wavelet coherence(WTC) analysis based on continuous wavelet transform(CWT) analysis with the sequential Mann-Kendall test.We find that over the past six decades,the climate in Xinjiang has become warmer and has suffered from increases in the frequency of warm extremes and decreases in the frequency of cold extremes.Warm extremes have mainly occurred in the southern Tianshan Mountains surrounding the Tarim Basin and western part of the Taklamakan Desert,and cold extremes have primarily occurred in the southwestern Altai Mountains and northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains.Extreme temperature events,including warm extremes,cold extremes,and other temperature indices,have significant interannual variability,with the main oscillation periods at smaller(2–4-year band),intermediate(4–7-year band),and greater time scales in recent decades.Furthermore,cold-extreme indices,including frost days,cool days,and cool nights all show a clear change.oint during 1990–1997 at the 95% confidence level,and both ice days and cold spell duration indicator have a potential change.oint during 1981–1986.However,the changing points for warmextreme indices are detected during 1992–1998.The temperature variables are significantly correlated with the EI Ni?o-Southern Oscillation(ENSO) and Arctic Oscillation(AO),but less well correlated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation(PDO).The phase difference in the WTC spectra is not uniform between temperature extremes and climatic oscillations.Our findings will have important implications for local governments in taking effective measures to mitigate the potential effects of regiona

The chemical composition of atmospheric aerosols has been investigated. Contributions ofsulfate and soot in aerosols to the atmospheric extinction are studied. Discussions are made on the problems of aerosol emitted from volcano, forest fires in northern China, 1987 and oil field fires in Kuwait, 1991. It is indicated that the change. in concentration, particle size, and chemical composition of aerosol after those events could have impacts on the climate change.either regionally or globally and that the impact of aerosol particles on climate change.could compensate for some temperature increase caused by greenhouse gases and the increase of surface intensity of ultraviolet radiation due to ozone layer depletion.

As an important part of global climate system, the Polar sea ice is effccting on global climate change. through ocean surface radiation balance, mass balance, energy balance as well as the circulating of sea water temperature and salinity. Sea ice research has a centuries - old history. The many correlative sea ice projects were established through the extensive international cooperation during the period from the primary research of intensity and the boaring capacity of sea ice to the development of sea/ice/air coupled model. Based on these reseamhes, the sea ice variety was combined with the global climate change. All research about sea ice includes： the physical properties and processes of sea ice and its snow cover, the ecosystem of sea ice regions, sea ice and upper snow albedo, mass balance of sea ice regions, sea ice and climate coupled model. The simulation suggests that the both of the area and volume of polar sea ice would be reduced in next century. With the developing of the sea ice research, more scientific issues are mentioned. Such as the interaction between sea ice and the other factors of global climate system, the seasonal and regional distribution of polar sea ice thickness, polar sea ice boundary and area variety trends, the growth and melt as well as their influencing factors, the role of the polynya and the sea/air interactions. We should give the best solutions to all of the issues in future sea ice studying.

Tephra Discovered in High Resolution Peat Sediment and Its Indication to Climatic Event

Floating tephra was deposited together with ice core, snow layer, abyssal sediment, lake sediments, and other geological records. It is of great significance to interpret the impact on the climate change.of volcanic eruptions from these geological records. It is the first time that volcanic glass was discovered from the peat of Jinchuan （金川） Maar, Jilin （吉林） Province, China. And it is in situ sediments from a near-source explosive eruption according to particle size analysis and identification results. The tephra were neither from Tianchi （天池） volcano eruptions, Changbai （长白） Mountain, nor from Jinlongdingzi （金龙顶子） volcano about 1 600 aBP eruption, but maybe from an unknown eruption of Longgang （龙岗） volcano group according to their geochemistry and distribution. Geochemical characters of the tephra are similar to those of Jinglongdingzi, which are poor in silica, deficient in alkali, Na2O content is more than K2O content, and are similar to distribution patterns of REE and incompatible elements, which helps to speculate that they originated from the same mantle magma with rare condemnation, and from basaltic explosive eruption of Longgang volcano group. The tephra, from peat with age proved that the eruption possibly happened in 15 BC-26 AD, is one of Longgang volcano group eruption that was not recorded and is earlier than that of Jinglongdingzi about 1 600 aBP eruption. And the sedimentary time of tephra is during the period of low temperature alteration, which may be the influence of eruption toward the local climate according to the correlativity of eruption to local temperature curve of peat cellulose oxygen isotope.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation(AMOC)is part of the great ocean“conveyor belt”that circulates heat around the globe.Since the early 2000s,ocean sensors have started to monitor the AMOC,but the measurements are still far from accurate and the time window does not permit the separation of short term variability from a longer term trend.Other works have claimed that global warming is slowing down the AMOC,based on models and proxies of temperatures.Some other observations demonstrate a stable circulation of the oceans.By using tide gauge data complementing recent satellite and ocean sensor observations,the stability of the AMOC is shown to go back to 1860.It is concluded that no available information has the due accuracy and time coverage to show a clear trend outside the inter-annual and multi-decadal variability in the direction of increasing or decreasing strength over the last decades.

The degree-day factor （DDF） is a key parameter in the degree-day model, and the varia- tions in DDF have the significant effects on the accuracy of glacier mass balance modeling. In this study, Glacier No. 1 at the headwaters of Uriimqi （-~O）~Z~=） River in China was selected, and the estimated DDF by stakes-observed mass balance and meteorological data from 1983-2006 was used to analyze the spatio-temporal variability of DDF and its influencing factors, such as climate condition, surface fea- ture, and topography. Then, the ablations from the 1980s to 2000s were estimated using the degree-day modei, and the ablation change.from the 1980s to 2000s was divided into the change. caused by climate change.and by the ice-surface feature. The following results were obtained：（1） The annual change.in DDF for snow was not obvious, whereas that for ice increased, and the increasing trend on the lower glacier was more significant than that on the upper glacier because of decreased albedo caused by vari- ations in ice-surface feature; （2） The DDF for ice clearly decreased with altitude by approximately 0.046 and 0.043 mm.＇C-l-d-Lm-1 on the east and west branches, respectively, and the DDF of the west branch was obviously larger than that of the east branch in the same altitude belt; （3） the change. in mass balance in the summers from the 1980s to 2000s were -391 and -467 mm on the east and west branches, respectively. Among the total change., the components directly caused by climate change.were -193 and -198 mm, whereas those indirectly caused by ice-surface feature change.were -198 and -269 mm on the east and west branches, respectively.

Water pollution is among the most severe environmental problems in China, particularly in the vicinity of residential and urban areas. In almost all Asian countries, river monitoring is predominantly based on the analysis of chemical data. However, biological data are a worthwhile addition for the determination of the long-term ecological status of rivers and are particularly well-suited in case of steep pollution and disturbance gradients. A tool for river water quality assessment using benthic invertebrates has been developed for selected tributaries of the middle reach of the Yangtze River. Site selection was supported by a preclassification considering physico-chemical and hydromorphological conditions. Following a stratified sampling design, 34 samples were taken in small and large streams in the subtropical mountainous area of western Hubei （湖北）（China） covering a pollution gradient, accompanied by an extensive field protocol on stream characteristics and （physico-） chemical water analyses. The proposed assessment system is computed as an average score per taxon. The challenge to further consider the additional impact from global change.into the development of such tools is discussed.

Urban resilience is a major indicator of a city s sustainability.climate change.increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events,thereby increasing uncertainty and disaster risk.A city’s capacity to cope with climatic risks can be improved by developing resilience.In China,heavy rainfall is the most frequent and costly extreme weather event.We conducted a comparative case study on Beijing’s extraordinary 7.21 rainstorm disaster in 2012 and the 7.20 rainstorm in2016.Taken generic resilience and specific resilience as the analytical framework,we found that generic resilience is mainly determined by the socio-economic development level and geography of each district;while the combination of engineering and non-engineering adaptive measures after2012 disaster has improved the specific resilience to rainstorm disaster,which contributed a good performance in the 2016 rainstorm.As a megacity in China,Beijing is a representative case that provides guidance for other cities to improve their urban resilience to rainstorm disasters.
