Pakistan-USA Student Dialogue： Using Videoconference for International civic engagement

The United States Department of State funded a project focused on civic engagement. The participants were students and faculty at five universities in Pakistan and in the USA. The author is a representative from one of the USA-based universities. In a fortnightly high-definition videoconference dialogue between students at University of Nebraska at Omaha and Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad, the goals of deepening understanding, challenging stereotypes and inspiring community change are being met. This paper will present the preliminary results of an ongoing assessment of how this project has resulted in meeting these goals and suggest what can be done in future projects that will better meet the goals. This will add to the emerging literature on civic engagement and conflict resolution by exploring use of cutting edge technology to build trust and understanding across the world＇s divide.

This study examines three efficacy beliefs-political self-efficacy,political collective efficacy,and knowledge sharing efficacy-as antecedents of social media use and civic *** more than one thousand samples in Singapore,we empirically test(a)a conceptual framework that can provide an understanding of the relationship between the three types of efficacy and civic engagement and(b)the underlying mechanism through which the three types of efficacy beliefs affect civic engagement via social *** findings suggest that knowledge sharing efficacy was found to play an important role in mediating the relationships between social media use and political self-efficacy,political collective efficacy,respectively,which,in turn,influences the social media use.

The pace of urbanisation,with the increase in the number of metropolitan areas,has been paralleled with the heritage discourse of past generations that valorises monuments in isolation,and has pushed the appreciation of urban heritage to a grim corner in the face of *** the turn of the millennium there are international efforts to reverse this trend by placing culture and people-centred approaches into the heritage discourse in order to allow inclusive policies that see culture and cultural heritage as an asset and driving force for sustainable urban *** one of such instruments,the UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape,as an integrated management model,is considered in this article to have potentials to bridge existing divides to achieve sustainable urban *** this belief,the paper looks into the future,with supporting arguments that come from discussions as a result of the WHITRAP International Expert Meeting on the Implementation of the HUL approach which took place in 2018,Shanghai,China.

Public Communication in the Processes of Transparency and Accountability in the Era of Open Data

In recent years, transparency and accountability seem to find new impulse, with the development of ICT （information and communication technology） and the prospective of open data that invest the public system at a national and supranational level. Public institutions tend to make available to the public, more data and information concerning the administration, the manner of use of public goods and resources. At the same time, each institution is called upon to deal with the demand of transparency and participation by citizens who increasingly use Internet 2.0 and social media. After a reflection on how public administrations acted in the phase of Web 1.0 to practice transparency and accountability in terms of communication, this paper considers the elements of continuity and the new opportunities linked to the advent of Web 2.0 and open data. At the end of this analysis, the focus is on the strengths and weaknesses of this process, with a particular attention to the role of the public communication.

The Municipality of Puebla is today＇s capital of the fourth most important city of Mexico. During 2009, its city hall ranked infirst place in category of metropolitan city as information and communication technologies to reach part of ＂Digital City Award＂. From the strategy to use governmental efficiency, as well as interact with the population and socioeconomic development of the zone, free wireless internet was implemented in 39 areas to facilitate the access to training of citizenship by using this new form of media. The municipality has a population with great economic disparity, which is translated in strong social exclusion, located mainly in housing units and popular colonies with people in situation of hereditary poverty. Because of that, the need of knowing the profile and the consumer habits of mass media communication emerges. The research evaluates identification of actual and potential users of the web2.0, so it can be possible to recognize the chances of intervention in this segment and increase its participation on public character programs and promoting equality of opportunities and the possibility being a participative citizenship that contributes to the local human development.
