A Study on the Use of chunks by Chinese EFL Learners

chunks, as fixed or semi-fixed structures, are the unity of grammar, semantics, and context which play an important role in the process of language comprehension and generation. This paper gives a brief introduction to the definition and classification of chunks, and makes an in-depth analysis of the use of chunks in 95 Chinese EFL learners’ compositions on the basis of the classification of chunks by Nattinger and DeCarrico. For the incorrect chunks in the compositions, this paper makes qualitative analysis and classifies them into redundancy, avoidance, tense, mixing, and chunks creation. According to the analysis, four suggestions on chunks teaching are put forward in order to explore effective measures to promote chunks teaching and help language learners improve their practical application ability of English.

This article presents a tentative analysis of the preliminary stage of speech perception, primarily concerning its process,complexity and theory models. Some problems related to language perception have been as well explored. English language skill is an important part of the comprehensive linguistic competence for college students.Especiallythe language output competence by students Autonomous Learning.During the 70 s of the last century,Becker came up with theterm and and later put forward his Lexical chunks.Since then,it has been researched increasingly and paid more and more atten-tion to due to the fact that lexical chunks possess the features of both vocabulary and grammar.Teachers should exert lexicalchunks approach,consciously raise students' awareness of lexical chunks,and design various instructional activities based on dif-ferent teaching contents to improve students' language output competence.In this paper,the author carries out an experiment onthe college students from two classes of the same level in Grade one.And compared with the experimental class itself or with thecontrol class,found the students in experimental class have made far greater progress in English speaking and writing.

Based on the concepts of Lexical chunks and Multimodal Teaching,this paper focuses the input source of English vocabulary learning,integrating the advantages of Lexical Approach with Multimodal Teaching.As a new teaching exploration of English vocabulary,the teaching practice in classroom has shown that teachers should make full and reasonable use of various teaching means and resources to achieve multimodal teaching of lexical chunks,which is helpful to promote students to learn vocabulary quickly and effectively,and improve students'English language competence and performance.

With the guidance of lexical chunks teaching approach, this article is to discuss the application of corpusbased lexical chunks approach in English teaching by making use of corpus concordance analysis.After comparing the language differences between native language corpus and target language corpus, it advocates that the emphasis of English lexical study should be put on corpus-based study of chunks, aiming to promote the fluency and authenticity of language output in English teaching.
