Chemical, isotopic and amino acid composition of Mukundpura CM2.0(CM1) chondrite: Evidence of parent body aqueous alteration

The carbonaceous chondrites are intriguing and unique in the sense that they are the only rocks that provide pristine records of the early solar nebular processes. We report here results of a detailed mineralogical, chemical, amino acid and isotopic studies of a recently observed fall at Mukundpura, near Jaipur in Rajasthan, India. Abundance of olivines in this meteorite is low and of serpentine minerals is high. FeO/SiO_2 = 1.05 in its Poorly Characterized Phases(PCP) is similar to that observed in other CM2.0 chondrites. The water content of ～9.8 wt.% is similar to that found in many other CM chondrites.Microscopic examination of matrix shows that its terrestrial weathering grade is WO but aqueous parent body alteration is high, as reflected in low abundance of identifiable chondrules and abundant remnants of chondrules(～7%). Thus, most of the chondrules formed initially have been significantly altered or dissolved by aqueous alterations on their parent bodies. The measured bulk carbon(2.3%) and nitrogen content and their isotopic(δ^(13)C =-5.5‰, δ^(15)N = 23.6%0) composition is consistent with CM2.0 classification probably bordering CM1. Several amino acids such as Alanine, Serine, Proline, Valine, Threonine,Leucine, Isoleucine, Asparagine and Histamine are present. Tyrosine and Tryptophan may occur in trace amounts which could not be precisely determined. All these data show that Mukundpura chondrite lies at the boundary of CM2.0 and CM1 type carbonaceous chondrites making it one of the most primitive chondrites.

The Melting-Differentiation of chondrite and Initial Evolution of Earth

On the basis of elementary knowledge of meteoritics and the theory of solarsystem evolution, the primary matter of the earth was proved to be composed of various nebular condensates similar to each group of chondrites.The melting-experiments of chondriteat high pressure show that chondrite undergoes two major differentiation stages under high temperature and high pressure.In accordance with these results,the initial evolution of the earth is inferred:the original earth consisted of Fe-Ni inner core and quasi-chondrite original mantle. The first differentiation of original mantle resulted in the formation of Fe-Ni-S(P,C) outer core, then the second differentiation of mantle created two types of original crust——Si, Al-rich and Ca, Al-rich.

The Juancheng chondrite──A new meteorite falling recently in China

The Juancheng chondrite, a new meteorite falling recently in Juancheng County, Shandong Province, China, is classified as an H5 (S2) chondrite based on the compositions of olivine (Fa= 19.2, σ Fa=0.46) and low-Ca pyroxene (Fs=16.9, σ Fa=0.4). The plagioclase in the Juancheng chondrite is rich in CaO, indicating a relatively high metamorphic temperature the parent body underwent.

Cosmic-ray exposure and gas retention ages of the Guang-mingshan(H5) chondrite

Isotopic compositions of noble gases from the Guangmingshan chondrite were analyzed. Based on the analyses of cosmogenic nuclei, cosmic-ray exposure age of the meteorite is (65±10.0) Ma (3He), (80±12) Ma (21Ne) and (65±10.0) Ma (38Ar), with an average of 70 Ma. This is the highest exposure age of H-group ordinary chondrites. Gas retention ages of K-Ar and U, Th-4He are (4230±100) Ma and (3300±60) Ma, respectively. The smaller ages of 3He than 21Ne and 4He than Ar suggest that both 3He and 4He lost together. This is probably related to a solar heating effect of a meteorite with a small perihelion during the last exposure period.

The cosmochemistry data suggest that chondrites experiencing no melt-fractionation retain the feature in composition and structure of primitive planet. Therefore, the chondrites are regarded as initial material of terrestrial planets. In order to study the formation and evolution history of stratified struture of terrestrial planets, the experiments on melting of chondrites have been carried out.

Noble gas and cosmic-ray exposure age of Juancheng chondrite

The analytical results of noble gase in recently fallen Juancheng chondrite indicate that cosmic-ray ages of cosmogenic nuclei of 3He, 21Ne and 38Ar are 5.1, 5.0 and 5.8 Ma, respectively, averaging 5.3 Ma. The gas retention ages radiogenic nuclei of 4He and 40Ar are 3200 and 4 200 Ma, respectively. The average cosmic-ray age shows that it has occurred at breakup of the meteoroid from its parent body by impact before 5.3 Ma.

A Ca-Al-RICH CHONDRULE IN BOXIAN chondrite

The Boxian meteorite (LL3-4), fallen in October 1977, possesses low degree of thermal metamorphism and good chondrule texture. A Ca-Al-rich chondrule （CA chondrule） was found in this chondrite. This chondrule is ca. 0.36 mm in diame ter. There is only one light red euhedral spinel crystal, ca. 34％ in volume of this chondrule, while prismatic fassaite crystals occupy ca. 29％ and only one small crystal of olivine and light brown intergranular glass of the above minerals, ca. 37％（Fig. 1）.

Ca, Al-rich inclusions in Yamato 791717 (CO3) carbonaceous chondrite: Formation and alteration

In three polished thin sections of Yamato 791717 (CO3), fifty\|five Ca, Al\|rich inclusions were found, which include two hibonite\|bearing, eight melilite\|rich and forty\|five spinel\|pyroxene inclusions. Based on the petrography and mineral chemistry of the inclusions, it is proposed that the melilite\|rich inclusions and spinel\|pyroxene inclusions condensed in the solar nebula, and the hibonite\|bearing inclusions crystallized from melts. The heavy alteration of the inclusions in Yamato 791717, which probably took place under a very oxidizing condition in the solar nebular, is also confirmed.

Petrogenesis of opaque assemblages in the Ningqiang carbonaceous chondrite

Numerous round to oblate opaque assemblages (OAs) are found in chondrules and matrix of the Ningqiang carbonaceous chondrite. They are mainly composed of Ni-rich metal,magnetite,Fe,Ni-sulfides,with minor amounts of phosphate,phosphoran-olivine,pyroxene and trace amounts of nano-sized platinum-group metal alloys. The mineralogy of Ningqiang OAs is very similar to that of OAs previously reported in Ca,Al-rich inclusions of CV chondrites. Being a rare mineral phase in nature,phosphoran-olivine is thought to form by nonequilibrium reactions between P-bearing molten metal and olivine crystals during rapid cooling. Its occurrence in Ningqiang OAs indicates that the precursor of OAs was locally produced during chondrule formation,rather than directly condensed from the solar nebula as previously thought. The petrographic and mineralogical characteristics of Ningqiang OAs reveal that OAs formed by low temperature alterations of pre-existing homogeneous alloys within chondrules on a planetary body.
