Distribution of organic carbon in sediments and its influences on adjacent sea area in the turbidity maximum of Changjiang Estuary in China

Distributions and sources of total organic carbon （TOC）in seabed sediments and their implications for hydrodynamics are analyzed, in the turbidity maximum of the Changjiang Estuary. Ecology ecoenvironmental effects of estuary water on the continuously increasing terrigenous organic carbon from the Changjiang River are also explored through variations of organic carbon content and water quality indicators. Results show that, hydrodynamics exert important influences on distributions of organic carbon in the tur- bidity maximum of Changjiang Estuary. For their redistribution effect of terrigenous organic carbon within the moving layer in the whole region, variations from land to sea are not indicated by surficial and vertical average values of TOC and total nitrogen （TN） contents in core sediment, as well as organic stable carbon isotopes in surface sediments. However, on the long-time scale, the trend of terrigenous organic carbon decreasing from land to sea is still displayed by variations of stable carbon isotopic average values becoming heavier from land to sea. Previous studies have shown that high content of Chl a cannot appear in the Changjiang Estuary in despite of adequate nourishment supply, because photosynthesis of phytoplankton is constrained by high suspended sediment concentration（SSC）. However, an area with a high content of Chl a occurs, which may be caused by resuspended benthic algae with bottom fine grain-size sediments. Tremendous pressures are imposed on the environment of Changjiang Estuary, because of uhrophication trends and special hydrodynamics. Phytoplankton bloom area tends to extend from the outer sea to the mouth of Changjiang River.

Validation of MODIS ocean-colour products in the coastal waters of the Yellow Sea and East China Sea

An extensive study collected in situ data along the Yellow Sea(YS) and East China Sea(ECS) to assess the radiometric properties and the concentration of the water constituents derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS). Thirteen high quality match-ups were obtained for evaluating the MODIS estimates of Rrs(λ), chlorophyll a(Chl a) and concentrations of suspended particulate sediment matter(SPM). For MODIS Rrs(λ), the mean absolute percentage difference(APD) was in the range of 20%–36%, and the highest uncertainty appeared at 412 nm, whereas the band ratio of Rrs(λ) at 488 nm compared with that at 547 nm was highly consistent, with an APD of 7%. A combination of near-infrared bands and shortwave infrared wavelengths atmosphere correction algorithm(NIR-SWIR algorithm) was applied to the MODIS data, and the estimation accuracy of Rrs were improved at most of the visible spectral bands except 645 nm, 667 nm and 678 nm. Two ocean-colour empirical algorithms for Chl a estimation were applied to the processed data, the results indicated that the accuracy of the derived Chl a values was obviously improved, the four-band algorithms outperformed the other algorithm for measured and simulated datasets, and the minimum APD was 35%. The SPM was also quantified. Two regional and two coastal SPM algorithms were modified according to the in situ data. By comparison, the modified Tassan model had a higher accuracy for the application along the YS and ECS with an APD of 21%. However, given the limited match-up dataset and the potential influence of the aerosol properties on atmosphere correction, further research is required to develop additional algorithms especially for the low Chl a coastal water.

The vertical attenuation of irradiance as a function of turbidity: a case of the Huanghai (Yellow) Sea in spring

The planar photosynthetically available radiation （PAR）, turbidity and concentration of chlorophyll a （chl a）, were measured at 26 stations in the Huanghai （Yellow） Sea during a cruise of China SOLAS from 19 to 27 March 2005. Due to low chl a （〈0.35 mg · m^-3 ） in upper layers （above 5 m）, suspended particulate matter became the major factor that influenced the turbidity in early spring. The calculated vertical diffuse attenuation coefficient of PAR, K PAR , varied with water depths with a maximum value in the upper 5 m layer. The mean K PAR in survey area was 0.277 ± 0.07 m^-1 that is considerably higher than most of the other case 2 waters. Within the survey area, K PAR also showed distinct regional characteristics, corresponding to the distribution of turbidity. Based on measurements, the relationship between K PAR and turbidity as well as chl a was established. It was suggested that suspended particulate matter plays an important role in light attenuation in the Huanghai （Yellow） Sea in spring.

Variability of size-fractionated phytoplankton standing stock in the Amundsen Sea during summer

Dissolved oxygen(DO)and apparent oxygen utilization(AOU)are essential parameters for evaluating the impact of climate change on marine *** this study,we utilized data on DO and AOU collected from the Amundsen Sea(western Antarctic)and the Cosmonaut Sea(eastern Antarctic)during the 38th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition,along with chlorophyll a(Chl a)data,to analyze the impact of primary production and the spatial distribution and structural features of water masses in these *** findings show that the standard deviation range of parallel DO samples is between 0.1 and 3.9μmol·L^(-1),meeting the precision criteria of the survey *** values lower than 0.0μmol·L^(-1) were commonly observed in the surface waters of both regions,with the highest incidence in the polynya of Amundsen Sea,indicating a strong influence of high primary *** Cosmonaut Sea exhibited the highest AOU values(higher than 160.0μmol·L^(-1))in the 75-500 m layer,while AOU value in the Amundsen Sea did not exceed 160.0μmol·L^(-1),suggesting potential upwelling of Circumpolar Deep Water to 100 m in the Cosmonaut Sea with minimal changes in its properties,whereas significant changes were noted in the properties of upwelling modified Circumpolar Deep Water in the Amundsen *** values lower than 125.0μmol·L^(-1)were detected in the near-bottom waters of the Cosmonaut Sea,indicating the presence of Antarctic Bottom Water.

Size-fractionated phytoplankton standing stock and primary production in the Bohai Sea during late spring

During June 1997 cruise by R/V Science No.l, observations on temporal and spatialvariations of the size-fractionated phytoplankton standing stock and primary production were carried out in the Bohai Sea. The size-fractionated chlorophyll a (Chl a) and primary production, photosynthet-ically available radiation (PAR), as well as the related physico-oceanographic and zooplanktonic parameters were measured at five time-series observation stations representing sub-areas of the sea. Results obtained show that there were the marked features of spatial zonation of Chl a and primary production in the Bohai Sea. The values in the Laizhou Bay, the Liaodong Gulf and the Bohai Gulf were high and showed close relation with tidal fluctuations, i.e. high Chi a concentration occurred during high tide in the Laizhou Bay, and during low tide in the Liaodong Gulf and the Bohai Gulf. In the strait and the central region of the Bohai Sea, the values were relatively low and no relationship with tidal fluctuation could be found. chlorophyll a concentration vertically decreased from surface to bottom in the Liaodong Gulf and the Bohai Gulf, while it increased in the Laizhou Bay, the strait and the central region of the Bohai Sea, and the highest value was encountered at the bottom. Size-fractionation results showed that nano - combining pico -plankton ( 20 μm), nano - (2- 20 fan) and picoplankton (< 2 μm) was 13% , 63% and 24% to total production, and 9% , 53% and 38% to total Chl a, respectively. It proved the importance of nano - and pico -plankton in phytoplankton communities in the Bohai Sea e-cosystems. In this paper the factors, such as light intensity and zooplankton grazing pressure, governing standing stock and production of phytoplankton in the Bohai Sea were also discussed.

Primary production processes in the Taiwan Strait──Spatial and temporal variations of phytoplankton biomass and productivity

The abundance,diurnal variation features of phytoplankton biomass and the horizontal distribution patterns of Chl. a and primary productivity in the Taiwan Strait were investigated during a summer and a winter cruise inAugust 1994 and February 1995, respectively. Results show that the horizontal distribution of phytoplankton biomasswas quite similar to that of *** summer, there was a relatively barren, low priductive region in the centallocation of the northern Taiwan Starit (NTS), and high productive regions were located at the nearshore and to thenorth of Cape Fugui of Taiwan Island; meanwhile, high productivity regions were only located at coastal waters of thesouthern Taiwan Strait (STS). In winter, high productive regions of NTS occurred off northwestern coast of TaiwanIsland, while that of STS was located along the southem edge of Minnan (South Fujian) - Taiwan Bank. Vertical patterns of the diurnal variation of Chl. a indicated that in non-stratified waters, phytoplankton biomass changed in tiedrhythm; as for the stratified waters, the depth at which the highest variation amplitude located located coincided with thedepth where the highest variation frequency occurred. The grazing pressure of zooplankton strongly influenced the diurnal variation of size-fractionated structure of phytoplankton biomass. As a result of our investgitions, we concludethat in the Taiwan Strait, biological porcesses may be more important at smaller scales where behaviors such as verticalmigration and predation may control the phytoplankton production, whereas physical processes may be more importantat larger scales in structuring phytoplankton patchness.

Standing Crop and Primary Production of Benthic Microalgae on the Tidal Flats in Yueqing Bay

The standing stock and primary production of benthic microalgae on tidal flats were measured seasonally at 3 transects (Puqing, Dahengchuang and Puqi) in Yueqing Bay during 2002 2003. The results showed that the integral chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration in tidal flat mud exhibited a seasonal variation with the order of magnitude: winter (14.0 4.2 mg m-2) > spring (13.0 6.3 mg m-2) > autumn (7.7 5.9 mg m-2) > summer (4.6 3.2 mg m-2). The primary production showed an order of magnitude: spring (270.5 224.9 mgC m-2 d-1)>winter (238.7 225.5 mgC m-2 d-1)>autumn (214.1 56.2 mgC m-2 d-1)>summer (71.6 44.6 mgC m-2 d-1). Both chlorophyll a and primary production showed maximum values in the surface layer of sediment, and decreased rapidly with increasing depth due to sun light limitation. The results of variance analysis indicated that seasonal variation and tidal flat condition affected Chl a greatly, but had no significant effect on primary production. The annual primary production of benthic microalgae on tidal flats in Yueqing Bay was estimated at 16143 tons carbon, which is sufficient to support 1.02×105 tons shellfish production. The environmental factors affecting chlorophyll and primary production on the tidal flats in Yueqing Bay were discussed. By comparing with other bays on China's coast, it was observed that Yueqing Bay is a region with high benthic microalgae standing crop and primary production, which may be related to the type of its sediment.
