Study on chlorophyll a （Chl. a） distribution and bloom patterns is essential in the upwelling areas that constitute the main fishery grounds of Vietnam. Based on high resolution satellite imagery and monthly in-situ data in period from 2007 to 2008, the spatial and temporal variations ofChl, a in the upwelling region including algal blooms have been detected. Anomalies of higher Chl. a concentration and bloom patterns occurred at different periods, locations, and bloom shapes in coastal waters of Southern Center of Vietnam. The appearances of these bloom are related to four difference reasons, such as：（i） Their locations coincided to main center of upwelling phenomena that usually occur during southwest monsoon （SWM）; （ii） Effect of northeast monsoon （NEM） that brings and attaches the nutrient into the coast and created ＂floating＂ algae bloom patches in coastal zones; （iii） The algae blooms can be potentially associated with Harmful Algae Bloom （HAB） during the SWM or local eddies during NEM and （iv） Their appearances are also as a result of distinctive nutrient inflow fi＇om Mekong delta and pumping of nutrients by internal waves in coastal shallow waters.

The investigation of size-fractionated chlorophyll a and primary productivity were carried out in three longitudinal sections (63°-69°12'S, 70°30'E, 73°E and 75(30'E) at December 18-26, 1998 and January 12-18, 1999 in Prydz Bay and its north sea area, Antarctica. The results showed that surface chlorophyll a concentration were 0. 16 -3. 99 μg dm-3. The high values of chlorophyll a concentration (more than 3.5 μg dm -3) were in Prydz Bay and in the west Ladies Bank. The average chlorophyll a concentration at sub-surface layer was higher than that at surface layer; its concentration at the deeper layers of 50 m decreased with increasing depth and that at 200 m depth was only 0. 01 -0. 95μg dm -3. The results of size-fractionated chlorophyll a showed that the contribution of the netplanktion to total chlorophyll a was 56% , those of the nanoplankton and the picoplankton were 24% and 20% respectively in the surveyed area. The potential primary productivity at the euphotic zone in the surveyed area was 0. 11 - 11. 67 mgC m-3h-1 and average value was 2.00 ±2.80 mgC m h . The in-situ productivity in the bay and the continental shelf was higher and that in the deep-sea area was lower. The assimilation number of photosynthesis was 1.53±1. 11 mgC/(mg Chi a · h). The results of size-fractionated primary productivity show that the contribution of the netplanktion to total productivity was 58% , those of the nanoplankton and the picoplankton were 26% and 16% respectively. The cell abundance of phytoplankton was 1. 6 × 103 - 164. 8 × 103 cell dm-3 in the surface water.

Advantages and disadvantages of three extraction methods （acetone grinding, heating and freezing extraction methods） in determination of chlorophyll a in surface water were compared, and the distribution of chlorophyll a in the Fenhe River in Taiyuan region was discussed. The results showed that more chlorophyll a was extracted using acetone heating and freezing extraction methods compared with acetone grinding method, and standard deviation （SD） was smaller. Interference of pheophytin a was eliminated, so accuracy of chlorophyll a content was improved. chlorophyll a content at points 1 # and 2# in the upper reaches of the Fenhe River was lower than that at other points close to residential areas.

[Objective] The research aimed to discuss extraction of the chlorophyll a from phytoplankton by hot-ethanol method. [Method] The measurement method of chlorophyll a was improved. By contrast test, the best extraction temperature and time of chlorophyll a by hot-ethanol meth- od were studied. Meanwhile, we contrasted hot-ethanol method with specification. I Result] It was simple to use hot-ethanol method to extract chlo- rophyll a from phytoplankton, and it was safe and reliable. When extraction temperature was 75℃ , extraction efficiency of the chlorophyll a was the highest using hot ethanol to hot for 3 min. chlorophyll a extracted by specification presented significant positive correlation with that by hot-ethanol method. Extraction efficiency of the hot-ethanol method was higher than that of the specification. [ Condusion] The research could provide theoretical reference for extraction of the chlorophyll a from phytoplankton in surface water.

A 2011 drought event affecting distribution of nutrients and chlorophyll in the Zhujiang River estuary

During the summer of 2011, a severe drought event occurred throughout the Zhujiang （Pearl） River Basin of South China. This decreased runoffinto the river, resulting in increased salinity and reduced suspended substance. To examine the effects of this extreme drought on the distribution of nutrients and chlorophyll, we compared two surveys from 2006 and 20ll. Results show that dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration did not change from 2006 to 2011, whereas the proportions of NOR and NH4＋ to DIN in 2011 increased. PO4 3- concentration was lower in 2011 than in 2006, whereas there was no difference in SiO3 2- concentration between these years. Correlation coefficients of salinity with levels of NO3-, NO2-, NH4＋, PO4 3- and SiO3 2- in 2011 were all much higher than those in 2006, suggesting greater conservation of dissolved nutrients during the extreme drought event. Furthermore, calculated amounts of regenerated nitrate and phosphorus and their proportions to observed nutrients in 2011 were much lower than in 2006, indicating that nutrient regeneration decreased during the extreme drought period. Mean concentration of chlorophyll a （Chl-a） was considerably higher in 2011 than in 2006, and a harmful algal bloom of Cochlodinium geminatum was observed in the estuary, owing to water stagnancy and lower turbidity as a consequence of drought. Therefore, the extreme drought event in 2011 changed the composition ratio of nutrients, enhanced nutrient conservative behavior, and reduced nutrient regeneration. This affected some key ecological processes in the estuary.

Luzon Strait is the main channel connecting the South China Sea(SCS)and the western Pacific,with complex atmospheric and oceanic dynamic *** on 44 days of glider measurements and satellite observations,we investigated the temporal and vertical variations of chlorophyll-a(Chl-a)concentration in the Luzon Strait from July 25 to September 6,*** Chl a was mainly distributed above 200 m and concentrated in the subsurface chlorophyll maximum(SCM)*** depth of SCM ranged between 50 m and 110 m,and the magnitude of SCM varied from 0.42 mg/m3 to 1.12 mg/*** variation of Chl a was identified with three stages responding to different dynamic *** the influence of Kuroshio intrusion,the SCM depth sharply deepened,and its magnitude decreased in Stage ***,a prominent Chl-a bloom was observed in the SCM layer from August 6 to August *** Chl-a bloom in Stage 2 was related to the influence of a cyclonic eddy,which uplifted of the thermocline and thus the deep *** Stage 3,prolonged heavy rainfall in the northeastern SCS resulted in a significant salinity decrease in the upper *** convergence of upper water deepened the thermocline and the mixed ***,the Chl a decreased in the SCM layer but increased in the surface *** particular,a typhoon passed through the Luzon Strait on August 24,which induced the Chl a increase in the upper 50 ***,there was little change in the depth-integrated Chl a(0-200 m),indicating that the Chl a increase in the surface layer was likely associated with physical entrainment of SCM caused by strong mixing,rather than the phytoplankton bloom in the upper water *** gliders provide frequent autonomous observations that help us understand the regional ocean’s complex dynamic processes and biological responses.

We present observations from deployments of turbulent microstructure instrument and CTD package in the northern South China Sea from April to May *** them we determined the turbulent mixing(dissipation rateεand diapycnal diffusivityκ),nutrients(phosphate,nitrate,and nitrite),nutrient fluxes,and chlorophyll a in two transects(A and B).Transect A was located in the region where turbulent mixing in the upper 100 m was weak(κ~10-6-10-4 m^(2)/s).Transect B was located in the region where the turbulent mixing in the upper 100 m was strong(κ~10-5-10-3 m^(2)/s)due to the influence of internal waves originating from the Luzon Strait and water intrusion from the Western *** both transects,there was a thin subsurface chlorophyll maximum layer(SCML)(>0.25 mg/m^(3))nested in the upper 100 *** observations indicate that the effects of turbulent mixing on the distributions of nutrients and chlorophyll a were different in the two *** the transect A with weak turbulent mixing,nutrient fluxes induced by turbulent mixing transported nutrients to the SCML but not to the upper *** were sufficient to support a local SCML phytoplankton population and the SCML remained *** the transect B with strong turbulent mixing,nutrient fluxes induced by turbulent mixing transported nutrients not only to the SCML but also to the upper water,which scatters the nutrients in the water column and diffuses the SCML.

chlorophyll a(Chl a),particulate organic carbon(POC)and biogenic silica(BSi)were determined in coastal waters adjacent to the Zhujiang(Pearl)River Estuary(ZRE)during summer,in order to examine the C:Chl a ratio of phytoplankton and phytoplankton carbon in the plume-impacted coastal waters during summer,as well as to assess the relative contribution of diatoms to the phytoplankton biomass,by the regression between Chl a,POC and *** results showed that the C:Chl a ratio(g/g)of phytoplankton was high(up to 142),likely due to high light intensity and nutrient *** river plume input stimulated phytoplankton growth,especially diatoms,resulting in higher relative contribution of phytoplankton carbon(55%)and diatoms(34%)to POC in the plume-impacted region than those(33%and 13%)in high salinity area,*** carbon(up to 538μg/L)in the plume-impacted region was much higher than that(<166μg/L)in high salinity *** findings were helpful to improve the biogeochemical model in coastal waters adjacent to the ZRE.

Four climatologies on a monthly scale (January, April, May and November) of chlorophyll a within the South China Sea (SCS) were calculated using a Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) (1979-1983) and the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) (1998-2002). We analyzed decadal variability of chlorophyll a by comparing the products of the two observation periods. The relationships of variability in chlorophyll a with sea surface wind speed (SSW), sea surface temperature (SST), wind stress (WS), and mixed layer depth (MLD) were determined. The results indicate that there is obvious chlorophyll a decadal variability in the SCS. The decadal chlorophyll a presents distinct seasonal variability in characteristics, which may be as a result of various different dynamic processes. The negative chlorophyll a concentration anomaly in January was associated with the warming of SST and a shallower MLD. Generally, there were higher chlorophyll a concentrations in spring during the SeaWiFS period compared with the CZCS period. However, the chlorophyll a concentration exhibits some regional differences during this season, leading to an explanation being difficult. The deepened MLD may have contributed to the positive chlorophyll a concentration anomalies from the northwestern Luzon Island to the northeastern region of Vietnam during April and May. The increases of chlorophyll a concentration in northwestern Borneo during May may be because the stronger SSW and higher WS produce a deeper mixed layer and convective mixing, leading to high levels of nutrient concentrations. The higher chlorophyll a off southeastern Vietnam may be associated with the advective transport of the colder water extending from the Karimata Strait to southeastern Vietnam.

[Objective] The aim was to explore effects of environmental factors on the content of chlorophyll a in ShaHu Lake.[Method] Based on the data in Shahu Lake from November in 2007 to September in 2008,the relationship between chlorophyll a and environmental factors like water temperature,pH,secchi-depth （SD）,total nitrogen,total phosphorus and potassium permanganate index was studied by grey relational analysis method.[Result] The main environmental factors affecting the content of chlorophyll a in ShaHu Lake were in order of water temperature potassium permanganate index 〉total nitrogen 〉pH〉 total phosphorus 〉SD.[Conclusion] The research provides reference for the control of eutrophication and the reasonable development and utilization of Shahu Lake.
