Topology optimization of chiral metamaterials with application to underwater sound insulation

chiral metamaterials have been proven to possess many appealing mechanical phenomena,such as negative Poisson's ratio,high-impact resistance,and energy *** work extends the applications of chiral metamaterials to underwater sound *** chiral metamaterials with low acoustic impedance and proper stiffness are inversely designed using the topology optimization *** acoustic impedance enables the metamaterials to have a high and broadband sound transmission loss(STL),while proper stiffness guarantees its robust acoustic performance under a hydrostatic *** proof-of-concept demonstrations,two specimens are fabricated and tested in a water-filled impedance *** results show that,on average,over 95%incident sound energy can be isolated by the specimens in a broad frequency range from 1 k Hz to 5 k Hz,while the sound insulation performance keeps stable under a certain hydrostatic *** work may provide new insights for chiral metamaterials into the underwater applications with sound insulation.

Circularly polarized light(CPL)has been given great attention because of its extensive *** several devices for CPL detection have been studied,their performance is affected by the magnitude of *** this paper,a self-powered photodetector based on hot electrons in chiral metamaterials is proposed and *** can be distinguished by the direction of photocurrent without external bias owing to the interdigital electrodes with asymmetric chiral *** by the direction of photocurrent,the device can easily detect the rotation direction of the CPL electric field,even if it only has a very weak *** responsivity of the proposed detector is near 1.9 mA/W at the wavelength of 1322 nm,which is enough to distinguish *** detector we proposed has the potential for application in optical communication.

Circular dichroism(CD)has shown very interesting possibilities as a means to characterize the chiral signal of a chiral ***,we theoretically demonstrated enhanced and tunable CD in the visible light regime using a composite structure consisting of a double-layer metal grating gaped by a dielectric waveguide *** on the coupling of the waveguide modes and the localized plasmonic resonances,the CD could reach a maximum value as high as 0.52 at635 nm,which is four times higher than the CD value obtained in a conventional double-layer grating without the waveguide coupling ***,the spectral positions of the enhanced CD bands could be easily tuned by controlling the structural *** proposed hybrid double-grating and waveguide structures could have potential applications in chiral selective imaging,sensing and spectroscopy,especially where the transmission measurement is required.

A multi-band circular polarizer using a twisted triple split-ring resonator（TSRR） is presented and studied numerically and experimentally. At four distinct resonant frequencies, the incident linearly polarized wave can be transformed into left/right-handed circularly polarized waves. Numerical simulation results show that a y-polarized wave can be converted into a right-handed circularly polarized wave at 5.738 GHz and 9.218 GHz, while a left-handed circularly polarized wave is produced at 7.292 GHz and 10.118 GHz. The experimental results are in agreement with the numerical results. The surface current distributions are investigated to illustrate the polarization transformation mechanism. Furthermore, the influences of the structure parameters of the circular polarizer on transmission spectra are discussed as well.
