The ability to sense physiological falls in arterial and/or tissue oxygen tension for the initiation of appropriate, corrective responses at a systemic level is limited to very few tissues,of which the carotid body is perhaps the most well ***,hypoxaemia,arising most commonly from inadequate alveolar ventilation,or from inspiring the low Po of high altitude,is met with a stereotypic,hyperventilatory and autonomic cardiovascular reflex response that has its origins in the transduction of tissue levels of Po in the carotid body into graded,afferent neural discharge in the chemoafferent fibres of the glossopharyngeal *** perfused,carotid body tissue Po is maintained relatively high and within a narrow range around 6kPa,with falls from this level being detected by one or more protein sensor molecules residing in the organ’s pre-synaptically located,typeⅠ*** proportional contribution of these sensors to the overall response is still contested,but,downstream of these,the consensus places value on the closing of specific K channels leading to depolarisation and hence voltage gated Caentry and neurosecretion of several transmitter and modulator substances including ATP,ACh,catecholamines and certain ***,even here there are challenges to the accepted dogma with a role for certain trp channels and even for intracellular Cabeing hinted at,albeit it perhaps in specific *** need for such,potential, complexity may arise from the finding that,in addition to sensing hypoxia,the carotid body can also transduce a number of other physico-chemical stimuli ranging from CO and temperature to *** of these stimuli interact with the sensing of hypoxia but whether they represent some non-selective modification of the O sensing pathway or are,indeed,stimuli in their own right,making the carotid body a polymodal receptor,is not *** addition,the carotid body response to hypoxia(and perhaps to its other stimuli)shows plasticit
