Changes in paddy cropping system enhanced economic profit and ecological sustainability in central china

In china,the traditional early and late season double rice(DR)system is declining accompanied by the fast increase of two newly developed cropping systems:ratoon rice(RR)and rice-crawfish(RC).Three methodologies:economic analysis,emergy evaluation and life cycle assessment(LCA)were employed to evaluate the economics and sustainability of this paddy cropping system change.Economic analysis indicated that the income and profit of the RC system were far larger than those of RR and DR.The income to costs ratio of RR and RC increased by 25.5 and 122.7%compared with that of DR,respectively.RC had the highest emergy input thanks to increasing irrigation water,electricity,juvenile crawfish and forage input while RR showed a lower total emergy and nonrenewable emergy input,such as irrigation water,electricity,fertilizers and pesticides than DR.The environmental loading ratios decreased by 16.7-50.4%when cropping system changed from DR to RR or from DR to RC while the emergy sustainability indexes increased by 22.6-112.9%.The life cycle assessment indicated lower potential environmental impacts of RR and RC,whose total environmental impact indexes were 35.0-61.0%lower than that of DR.Grain yield of RR was comparable with that of DR in spite of less financial and emergy input of RR,but RC had a much lower grain yield(a 53.6%reduction compared to DR).These results suggested that RR is a suitable cropping system to achieve the food security,economic and environmental goals.

Seasonal variations of leaf wax n-alkane distributions and δ^(2) H values in peat-forming vascular plants from the Dajiuhu peatland, central china

Leaf wax n-alkane compositions have been widely applied to reconstruct paleoclimate histories in peat deposits,yet understanding of how the n-alkanes vary during seasonal plant growth remains limited.Here we report variations in the molecular and wax-derived nalkane hydrogen isotope(δ^(2) Halk)in the three dominant vascular plant species(Sanguisorba officinalis,Carex argyi,Euphorbia esula)and surface peat deposits nearby from the Dajiuhu peatland over a growing season.All three species show a relatively high carbon preference index(CPI)in the beginning of the growing season,with the CPI values reaching as high as 50 in two of the three species.Two species(S.officinalis,E.esula)display relatively stable average chain length(ACL)values over the four sampling intervals,with standard derivations of 0.2-0.3.In contrast,C.argyi exhibits a significant fluctuation of ACL values(averaging 28.11.4)over the growing season.Theδ^(2) Halk in all three species decreased during leaf growth.In the final stage of growth,theδ^(2) Halk values of the three species are similar to those in the surface peats collected from the peatland.Combining the results of our measurements of alkane concentration andδ^(2) H values,it is likely that de novo synthesis of leaf wax n-alkanes in the peatforming plant species is mainly at the early stage of leaf development.In the following months,the removal process exceeds renewal,resulting in a general decrease of the concentration of the total n-alkanes and the integratedδ^(2) Halk values.Thus theδ^(2) Halk values probably integrate the environmental variations at the end of the plant growth period rather than the whole period or the early growth period.These results are significant and have the potential to improve the utility ofδ^(2) Halk values in paleoenvironmental reconstructions.

Vegetation types and climate conditions reflected by the modern phytolith assemblages in the subalpine Dalaoling Forest Reserve, central china

This research describes modern phytolith records and distributions from subalpine surface soils in the Dalaoling Forest Reserve, and reveals its implications for local climate conditions with respect to the altitude gradient. Well-preserved phytolith morpho-types, assem- blages, and climatic indices were used to study the relationship between local vegetation and climate condi- tions. The phytolith classification system is mainly based on the characteristics of detailed morpho-types described for anatomical terms, which are divided into seven groups： long cells, short cells, bulliform cells, hair cells, pterido- phyte type, broad-leaved type, and gymnosperm type. Phytoliths originating from the Poaceae are composed of Pooideae （rondel and trapeziform）, Panicoideae （bilobate, cross, and polylobate）, Chloridoideae （short/square sad- dle）, and Bambusoideae （oblong concave saddle）. Based on the altitudinal distribution of the phytolith assemblages and the indices of aridity （Iph）, climate （Ic）, and tree cover density （D/P）, five phytolith assemblage zones have revealed the five types of climatic conditions ranging from 1,169 m to 2,005 m in turn： warm-wet, warm-xeric to warm-mesic, warm- xeric to cool-mesic, cool-xeric, and cool-mesic to cool-xeric. The Bambusoideae, Panicoideae, and Chloridoideae are the dominant vegetation at the lower-middle of the mountains, while Pooideae is mainly distributed in the higher mountains. The close relationship between phytolith assembleages and changes of altitude gradient suggest that vegetation distribution patterns and plant ecology in the Dalaoling mountains are controlled by temperature and humidity conditions. Our results highlight the importance ofphytolith records as reliable ecoclimatic indicators for vegetation ecology in subtropical regions.

Trade-offs/Synergies in Land-use Function Changes in central china from 2000 to 2015

To solve the problems caused by irrational land-use, studying the functions of land-use, its changing characteristics, and the relationship between each land-use function will be beneficial for achieving sustainable land development. In this research, we constructed an evaluation framework of multiple land-use functions(LUFs) based on sustainable land-use theory. Specifically,, we classified the multiple LUFs into three types: agricultural production function(APF), living function(LVF), and ecological service function(ESF).We then spatialized the economic and social data, and implemented the InVEST(Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs) model and RUSLE(Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) model to evaluate each sub-LUF(crop production, aquatic production, woodlands production, livestock production, living space, life quality, water supply, soil conservation, climate regulation, biological conservation) in central china in 2000 and again in 2015. Moreover, by analyzing the changes to LUFs and the relationships between each LUF change, we were able to discern patterns of LUF change in central china. The results show that: (1)42.12% of total territory in the study area increased their APF from 2000 to 2015, while 43.41% of the lands increased their ESF yet only 8.98% of the lands increased their LVF;(2) in Hubei and Hunan, there was more land with an increase of APF than in Anhui or Jiangxi. The APF in Jiangxi exhibited the greatest decline over time period, the LVF increased more in the provincial capital cities than in other regions, and the ESF expanded more in Jiangxi than in the other provinces;and (3) the changes in APF were significantly and positively correlated with changes in LVF. Additionally, changes in ESF were negatively but non-significantly correlated with changes in APF and LVF.

A neglected risk for sparganosis:eating live tadpoles in central china

A 29-year-old farmer from central china was sent into the Emergency Department of the Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University.He had a 15-day history of persistent high fever,abdominal distention and pain.The patient was clinically diagnosed as appendicitis and peritonitis,and treated with antibiotics in a local hospital,did not improve.On exploratory laparotomy,the appendicular perforation and peritonitis were seen;appendicectomy were performed,and antibiotics were given.However,high fever and abdominal pain still persisted;intestinal adhesion and obstruction,ascites appeared.He was given the“critically ill notice”.He had eosinophilia(12.95%)and the history of eating live frog tadpoles for treating his cutaneous pruritus 3 days before onset of the disease.Serum anti-sparganum antibodies assayed by ELISA were positive.This patient has hospitalized for one and half months and spend more than US$12000.This patient was primarily diagnosed as visceral sparganosis,and cured with praziquantel.Sparganosis is one neglected but important parasitic zoonosis of poverty.Human infections were mainly acquired by eating raw or uncooked meat of frogs and snakes infected with plerocercoids,using frog or snake flesh as poultices,or drinking raw water contaminated with infected copepods.However,sparganosis caused by ingestion of live tadpoles are emerging in central china.Our surveys showed that 11.93%of tadpoles in Henan province are infected with plerocercoids.Eating live tadpoles is a high risk for sparganum infection.The comprehensive public health education should be carried out for people in endemic areas and the bad habit of eating live tadpoles must be discouraged.

Research on urban spheres of influence based on improved field model in central china

Due to unique advantages in clearly understanding the interrelationship between city and its hinterland, as well as city and city, the study of urban spheres of influence is becoming highlight in regional research. This paper improves traditional field model from two aspects： the composite indicator and regional accessibility, in order to delineate urban spheres of influence more reasonably. Taking three years of central china as a case study, this paper investigates dynamic evolution of urban spheres of influence. Focusing on the evolution of spatial pattern, we abstract five types and its corresponding three stages theoretically. Finally, recommendation of development has been made for each stage. This study undertakes certain exploration in the study of urban spheres of influence from the perspective of theory and practice, hoping to provide some references for the study in this field and other regional research.

Pb Isotope Mapping in the Tongbai-Dabie Orogenic Belt, central china

Tongbai-Dabie orogenic belt in central china is a part of the collisional belt between the Yangtze and North china cratons. It represents one of the most extensive ultrahigh-pressure （UHP） and high-pressure （HP） metamorphic rocks in the world. The Pb isotope mapping in this area is a significant method to constrain the crustal structure and tectonic evolution and to identify the tectonic boundaries within the vertical tectonic stack. Based on the Pb isotope compositions of the Dabie complex （DBC）, the Tongbai complex （TBC）, UHP and HP metamorphic rocks and associated foliated granites, the lower metamorphosed rocks from North Huaiyang （NHY） tectonic belt, and Cretaceous granites in the Tongbai-Dabie orogenic belt, we determined the Pb isotope geochemical map of the Tongbai-Dabie orogenic belt. The Pb isotope map shows that the Pb isotope compositions are similar within each geological body or lithotectonic unit, but the Pb isotope compositions of different lithotectonic units show systematic variations in the Tongbai-Dabie orogenic belt. The NHY tectonic belt contrasts strongly with the Tongbai-Dabie UHP.HP metamorphic belt in Pb isotope compositions. It is suggested that the line along the Xiaotian-Mozitan fault, the north limit of the Tongbai-Dabie UHP and HP metamorphic rocks, represents an important tectonic boundary. Within the Tongbai-Dabie HP -UHP metamorphic belt, to the south of Xiaotian-Mozitan fault, the vertical variations of Pb isotope compositions in different lithotectonic units and the spatial relationship among different major lithotectonic units have been constrained.

PORPHYRY-TYPE MOLYBDENUM DEPOSITS IN THE EASTERN QINLING MO BELT, central china

The Eastern Qinling mineralizing belt of porphyry-type Mo deposits is located in the south margin of North china Platform. About 40% explored Mo resources of china are stored in that belt. Mo mineralization is related with Yanshanian （161-104Ma） small intermediate to acidic porphyry bodies. As the porphyry bodies intruded into Archean to middle Proterozoic carbonate rocks and alumino-silicate rocks, porphyry-type, sham-type and hornfels-type Mo ores were formed with different types of wallrock alteration. Ore-forming fluids are characterized by H2O-CO2-NaCl with lower to middle saline （0-l2.7% NaCl）. Oxygen and hydrogen isotope data suggest that ore-forming fluid of the early stage is mainly magmatic water. Along with evolution of mineralization to late stage, ratio of magmatic water decreased and meteoric water added.

High-pressure/low-temperature Metamorphism in Northern Hubei Province,central china

The Qinling-Dabie accretionary fold belt in east-central china represents the E-W trending suture zone between the Sino-Korean and Yangtze cratons. A portion of the accretionary complex exposed in northern Hubei Province contains a high-pressure / low-temperature metamorphic sequence progressively metamorphosed from the blueschist through greenschist to epidote-amphibolite / eclogite facies. The Hongan metamorphic belt can be divided into three metamorphic zones,based on progressive changes in mineral assemblages: Zone Ⅰ,in the south,is characterized by transitional blueschist-greenschist facies; ZoneⅡis characterized by greenschist facies; ZoneⅢ,in the northern most portion of the belt,is characterized by eclogite and epidote-amphibolite facies sequences. Changes in amphibole compositions from south to north as well as the appearance of increasingly higher pressure mineral assemblages toward the north document differences in metamorphic P-T conditions during formation of this belt. Preliminary P-T estimates for Zone I metamorphism are 5 ~ 7 kbar,350 ~ 450℃; estimates for Zone III eclogites are 10 ~ 22 kbar,500 ±50℃. The petrographic,chemical and structural characteristics of this metamorphic belt indicate its evolutionin a northward-dipping subduction zone and subsequent uplift prior to and during the final collisionbetween the Sino-Korean and Yangtze cratons.

An investigative report on information literacy training of individual farmers in central china and on issues related to remedial measures:A case study of farmers information literacy in a few districts of Hubei province

This paper introduced first a conceptual framework of 'information literacy training of farmers' based on the widely recognized understanding of the term 'information literacy(IL).' It then followed with a discussion based on these three authors' field investigation regarding to Hubei peasants' current information literacy training in such perspectives as information consciousness,information ability and ways and means of information access.It concluded by pointing out some of the more apparent factors that had adverse impacts on the farmers' information literacy training in central china and suggested a few possible remedial measures to guide the course for those who are involved in such undertakings.
