Difference between low-volume and high-volume Andersen samplers in measuring atmospheric aerosols

The mass concentration and size distribution of aerosols in Tokaimura were investigated using a high-volume and a low-volume Andersen sampler. A difference was found using the two samplers： the concentration of total aerosols determined with the high-volume sampler is smaller than that of the low-volume sampler by 70-90% throughout the year. Compared to the high-volume sampler, low-volume sampler gave lower concentration for aerosols 〉7 μm, higher concentration for aerosols of 3.3-7.0 μm and 〈 1.1 μm, though similar results for aerosols of 1.1-3.3 μm. The low-volume sampler was found to have better separation efficiency and higher accuracy.

Size Distribution of Particulate Matter of Metals in Urban Aerosols, Comarca Lagunera, Mexico

This paper has demonstrated that there is great variation in the size range and chemical composition of metalliferous PM （particulate matter） present within Comarca Lagunera, M6xico due to the physiography of the terrain together the intense vehicular traffic, unpaved roads, cement and lime plants, marble quarries, brick plants, and the largest smelter of non-ferrous material in Latin America. cascade impactor PM samples from six size ranges：〈 0.49 μm, 0.49-0.9 μm, 0.9-1.5μm, 1.5-3.0 p.m, 3.0-7.2 μm and 7.2-10 μm were collected from inside two stacks within G6mez Palacios and Torreon cities. ICP-AES （inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry） analysis on collected Whatman fiberglass filters demonstrates that the PM are matrices mostly constituted of carbonates and silicates with abundant fine metalliferous particles. The metals with the most concentrations averaged over all size ranges were Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Ti. The size distributions of metals detected in this work have been plotted as normalized histogram concentration of each size fraction, the total concentration, and the aerodynamic particle diameter, which is a useful method for comparing the contributions of coarse and fine particles to pollutant concentrations.

The performance of the 13-stage MOUDI-Ⅱcascade impactor(MSP Model 122,30 L/min)was studied for the collection efficiency and particle *** test particles in the aerodynamic size range between 17 to 450 nm were used for the tests,which were generated by a constant output atomizer(TSI Model 3076)using solutions of Oleic Acid(OA)or Dioctyl Sebacate(DOS)of different *** the experimental data,it was observed that the cutoff aerodynamic diameter(d)of 7,8 and9th stage of the MOUDI-II were 10,8 and 3%lower than the nominal values given by Marple et al,(1991)and particle loss increased from 13.85 to 31.96%as the particle diameter was decreased from 83.5 to 17 nm for the inlet to the 8-th stage(cutoff diameter is 180 nm).The loss is may be due to the high velocity jet from the nozzles,which creates a flow field recirculation region near the rear end of the nozzles leading to diffusional deposition of *** increase the accuracy of the cutoff diameters,new nozzle plates with smooth micro-orifice nozzles were fabricated for the 7th to 10th stages using a semiconductor technique in hoping to reduce possible clogging inside the *** values of S/W(S:jet to plate distance,W:nozzle diameter)of these lower stages were adjusted so that dvalues were close to the nominal values of the MOUDⅠ-Ⅱ.Results showed that S/W,3.5(7th stage),3.6(8th stage)and 13.8(9th stage)were different from those specified by Marple et al,(1991),which were 4.1(7th stage),6.4(8th stage)and10.6(9th stage).It is expected that the cascade impactor with new micro-orifice plates are able to obtain more accurate mass distributions of ambient aerosols.
