Electrocatalytic generation of hydrogen peroxide on cobalt nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon

Electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen is a growing synthetic technique for the sustainable production of hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2)).The current challenges concern seeking low-cost,highly active,and selective ***-nitrogen-doped carbon containing catalytically active cobalt-nitrogen(Co-N_(x))sites is an emerging class of materials that can promote the electrochemical generation of H_(2)O_(2).Here,we report a straightforward method for the preparation of cobalt-nitrogen-doped carbon composed of a number of Co-N_(x)moieties using low-energy dry-state ball milling,followed by controlled *** scalable method uses inexpensive materials containing cobalt acetate,2-methylimidazole,and Ketjenblack EC-600JD as the metal,nitrogen,and carbon precursors,*** measurements in an acidic medium show the present material exhibits a significant increase in the oxygen reduction reaction current density,accompanied by shifting the onset potential into the positive *** current catalyst has also demonstrated an approximate 90%selectivity towards H_(2)O_(2)across a wide range of *** H_(2)O_(2)production rate,as measured by H_(2)O_(2)bulk electrolysis,has reached 100 mmol g_(cat).^(–1)h^(–1)with high H_(2)O_(2)faradaic efficiency close to 85%(for 2 h at 0.3 V ***).Lastly,the catalyst durability has been tested(for 6 h at 0.3 V ***).The catalyst has shown relatively consistent performance,while the overall faradic efficiency reaches approximate 85%throughout the test cycle indicating the promising catalyst durability for practical *** formed Co-N_(x)moieties,along with other parameters,including the acidic environment and the applied potential,likely are the primary reasons for such high activity and selectivity to H_(2)O_(2)production.

Filling the in situ-generated vacancies with metal cations captured by C-N bonds of defect-rich 3D carbon nanosheet for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis

Nitrogen-doped carbon materials with vacancies/defects have been developed as highly efficient ORR electrocatalysts but with poor activity for OER,which limits their application in rechargeable metal-air *** the vacancies/defects with heteroatoms is expected to be an effective strategy to obtain surprising catalytic activities and improve their stability especially under the strongly oxidizing conditions during the OER ***,we successfully transformed the defect-rich 3 D carbon nanosheets(DCN)into a bifunctional ORR/OER electrocatalyst(DCN-M)by utilizing the in-situ generated vacancies to capture metal cations via a modified salt-sealed *** varying the metal(Fe,Ni)content,the captured metal cations in DCN-M existed in different chemical states,i.e.,metal atoms were stabilized by CàN bonds at low metal contents,while at high metal contents,bimetal particles were covered by graphene layers,taking responsibility for catalyzing the ORR and OER,*** addition,the in-situ formed graphene layers with an interconnected structure facilitate the electron transport during the *** Janus-feature of DCN-M in structures ensures superior bifunctional activity and good stability towards ORR/OER for the rechargeable Zn-air *** work provides an effective strategy to design multifunctional electrocatalysts by heteroatom filling into vacancies of carbon materials.

The use of steel-making slag as catalysts for microwave-assisted dry reforming of CH4 was studied. Two carbon materials (an activated carbon and a metallurgical coke), mixtures of the carbon materials and Fe-rich slag, and mixtures of the carbon materials and Ni/Al2O3 were tested as catalysts. The mixtures of slag with carbons gave rise to higher and steadier conversions than those achieved over the carbon materials alone. In addition, the use of the metallurgical coke mixed with metal-rich catalysts gave rise to remarkable results. Thus, no CH4 and CO2 conversions were achieved when coke was used alone, whereas high conversions were obtained when it was mixed with the metal-rich catalysts.

The decomposition and CO2 reforming of methane,respectively,are promising alternatives to industrial steam methane reforming. In recent years,research has been focused on the development of catalysts that can operate without getting deactivated by carbon deposition,where,in particular,carbon catalysts have shown positive results. In this work,the role of carbon materials in heterogeneous catalysis is assessed and publications on methane decomposition and CO2 reforming of methane over carbon materials are reviewed. The influence of textural properties(BET surface area and micropore volume,etc.) and oxygen surface groups on the catalytic activity of carbon materials are discussed. In addition,this review examines how activated carbon and carbon black catalysts,which are the most commonly used carbon catalysts,are deactivated. Characteristics of the carbon deposits from methane are discussed and the influence of the reactivity to CO2 of fresh carbon and carbonaceous deposits for high and steady conversion during CO2 reforming of CH4 are also considered.
