The timing of major life-history events, such as migration and moult, is set by endogenous circa-dian and circannual clocks, that have been well characterized at the molecular level. Conversely,the genetic sources of variation in phenology and in other behavioral traits have been sparsely ad-dressed. It has been proposed that inter-individual variability in the timing of seasonal events mayarise from allelic polymorphism at phenological candidate genes involved in the signaling cascadeof the endogenous clocks. In this study of a long-distance migratory passerine bird, the willowwarbler Phylloscopus trochilus, we investigated whether allelic variation at 5 polymorphic loci of 4candidate genes （Adcyapl, Clock, Crebl, and Npas2）, predicted 2 major components of the annualschedule, namely timing of spring migration across the central Mediterranean sea and moultspeed, the latter gauged from ptilochronological analyses of tail feathers moulted in the Africanwinter quarters. We identified a novel Clockgene locus （Clock region 3） showing polyQ polymorph-ism, which was however not significantly associated with any phenotypic trait. Npas2 allele sizepredicted male （but not female） spring migration date, with males bearing longer alleles migratingsignificantly earlier than those bearing shorter alleles. Crebl allele size significantly predicted male（but not female） moult speed, longer alleles being associated with faster moult. All othergenotype-phenotype associations were statistically non-significant. These findings provide newevidence for a role of candidate genes in modulating the phenology of different circannual activ-ities in long-distance migratory birds, and for the occurrence of sex-specific candidate gene effects.

Discovery and preclinical development of ⅢM-160, a Bergenia ciliatabased anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic botanical drug candidate

Objective: Bergenia ciliata(Haw.) Sternb. is used in the Indian traditional system of medicine to treat various ailments including rheumatism and to heal wounds. The objective of the present study was to perform a preclinical characterization of the B. ciliata-based botanical extract IIIM-160.Methods: ⅢM-160 was chemically standardized and analyzed for heavy metal content, aflatoxins,pesticides and microbial load. The in vitro and in vivo efficacies were determined in suitable models of inflammation, arthritis and nociception. An acute oral toxicity study was performed in Swiss albino mice.A suitable oral formulation was developed and characterized.Results: Bergenin was found to be the major component(9.1% w/w) of ⅢM-160. The botanical lead displayed inhibition of lipopolysaccharide-induced production of proinflammatory cytokines in THP-1 cells, with selectivity toward interleukin-6(IL-6) and had an excellent safety-window. It showed anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic and antinociceptive activity in animal models and was not toxic at oral doses up to 2 g/kg in Swiss-albino mice. The gastroretentive, sustained-release capsule formulation showed sustained-release of the bergenin over the period of 24 h, resulting in improved plasma-exposure of bergenin in Sprague–Dawley rats.Conclusion: The dual-activity of IL-6 inhibition and antinociception marks the suitability of ⅢM-160 for treating rheumatoid arthritis. This study will serve as the benchmark for further research on this botanical formulation.

Dear Editor, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERSCoV),first isolated in 2012,has emerged zoonotically among humans (van Boheemen et al.2012).Since then, MERS-CoV continues to be a public health concern,with a fatality rate of 35%.On-going MERS-CoV outbreaks highlight the urgent need for the development of interventional measures,including an effective vaccine against MERS-CoV infection.Currently,no licensed therapeutic or vaccine is available (Okba et al.2017).

Molecular mapping and candidate gene analysis of the semi-dominant gene Vestigial glume1 in maize

The glume is an organ of the maize spikelet and plays important roles in anther and kernel development.Vestigial glume1(Vg1)is a classic mutant associated with ligule and glume development.Here we report the phenotypic characterization,fine mapping,and candidate gene analysis of the Vg1 mutant.Vg1 is a semi-dominant and pleiotropic gene,and also affects plant height,ear height,and tassel length.Vg1 ligule degeneration begins at the first leaf,and the Vg1 tassel and ear can be distinguished from those of wild-type plants when their lengths reach respectively 55 mm and 51 mm.Using a BC3 mapping population of 11,445 plants,we delimited the Vg1 functional site to an interval of 7.4 kb,flanked by the markers InDelLM and CRM6.A putative cyclopropane fatty-acid synthase gene(ZmCPA-FAS1)was hypothesized to underlie the mutant phenotype.We detected a Helitron insertion in the sixth intron of ZmCPAFAS1.Its presence caused abnormal alternative splicing of ZmCPA-FAS1 that conferred new characteristics on the Vg1 mutant.These findings are a basis for further discovery of the molecularmechanism underlying glume development and a potential guide formaize breeding of small-glume varieties,especially sweet corn breeding.

The Analysis on the candidate Frequency Bands of Future Mobile Communication Systems

Appropriate candidate frequency bands are extremely important for the development of future 5G systems. In this work, the researches on 5G spectrum around the world are summarized. Then the potential candidate frequency bands for 5G systems are investigated based on practical utilization of spectrum in China. For spectrum below 6GHz, the feasibility of possible frequency bands for 5G system are analyzed, which mainly come from 2G/3G/4G spectrum re-farming, the spectrum identified by footnotes for IMT systems in Regulations on the Radio Frequency Allocation of China, and potential candidate bands from WRC-15 Agenda Item 1.1. Moreover, propagation characteristics of WRC-15 candidate frequency bands proposed by China are measured and modeled to verify their effectiveness. For spectrum above 6GHz, the potential candidate frequency bands for 5G systems are selected based on the preliminary analysis of spectrum allocation, allotment and the current usage in China. Suggestions are provided for further studies on 5G spectrum.

Clinical development update: 1st dengue vaccine candidate

A candidate tetravalent dengue vaccine is being assessed in three clinical trials involving more than 35,000 children between the ages of 2 and 16 years in the Asia-Pacific and Latin American countries.We report the results of long-term follow-up interim analyses and integrated efficacy analyses.We are assessing the incidence of hospitalization for virologically confirmed dengues a surrogate safety end point during follow-up in years 3–6 of two phase 3 trials,CYD14 and CYD15,and a phase 2b trial,CYD23/57.We estimated vaccine efficacy using pooled data from the first 25 months of CYD14 and CYD15.

This paper introduced ITU-R TG 5/1 task group, as well as the current research situation, especially illustrated some interference scenario. Based on 5G high frequency candidate band, radio communication services and the electromagnetic compatibility analysis work, we studied all recommendations and reports related to candidate sub bands, and then classified three very important sub-bands’ recommendations and reports, which had played a positive role in promoting 5G high-frequency candidate band radio interference coexistence analysis research.

Wood plays a major role in land ecosystems and in human activity. Better understanding the genetic basis and evolutionary implication of wood variability are thus key issues with both ecological and economical implications. The present paper addresses the question of the extending and the nature of natural selection on wood related genes in Eucalyptus urophylla, a tropical tree species with key economical importance. We conducted a genetic study on an E. urophylla population from Timor Island using a set of 17 SSR characterized on a main sample of 43 individuals and six candidate genes sequenced on a subset of 18 individuals. The candidate genes include three cellulose synthase genes (EuCesA1, EuCesA2 and EuCesA3), and three genes involved in lignin synthesis (EuCAD2, EuC4H1 and EuC4H2). Based on SSR data, the investigated population appeared to have no structure and have undergone past population expansion. Accounting for this demographic history, we were able to draw neutral expectation for polymorphism distribution on candidate genes and to determine their potential selective status. We hence identified two gene portions exhibiting unexpected polymorphism pattern, consistent with natural selection imprint.

QTL for floral stem lignin content and degradability in three recombinant inbred line (RIL) progenies of <i>Arabidopsis thaliana</i>and search for candidate genes involved in cell wall biosynthesis and degradability

Deciphering the genetic determinants involved in cell wall assembly is a strategic issue for breeding programs that target both ruminant feeding and biofuel production. The Arabidopsis thaliana model system has great potentials to elucidate the genetic determinants involved in cell wall component biosynthesis and those involved in the regulation cascades allowing their coordinated assembly. QTL for biomass quality related traits (cell wall content, lignin content, and cell wall degradability) were mapped in the three Arabidopsis RIL progenies Bay0 × Shahdara, Bur0 × Col0, and Blh1 × Col0. Overall, 40 QTL were detected for these traits, explaining up to 33 and 12% of the observed phenotypic variation for lignin content and cell wall degradability respectively. Major QTL hotspots were mapped on chromosome 1 (position 5 Mbp), chromosome 4 (position 1 Mbp), and chromosome 5 (position 3 Mbp). A putative candidate gene set (82 genes) was considered including those previously described as involved in cell wall phenolic component biosynthesis, their regulation factors, and genes involved in lignified tissue patterning. Colocalisations observed (according to the reference sequence of Col0) between the detected QTL and these candidate genes did not prioritize any of the three gene groups (monolignol biosynthesis, transcription factors, lignified tissue patterning). Colocalizations were thus observed for 57% of monolignol biosynthesis related genes, 55% of the transcription factors considered, and 66% of genes considered to be involved in lignified tissue patterning and assembly. Colocalizations were observed for at least one member of all investigated gene families, except WRKY transcription factors. Colocalizations were also shown with several miRNA putatively involved in the regulation of lignifying tissue assembly. Taking into account the QTL shown in the Bur0 × Col0 progeny, allelic variations were shown in the MYB32, MYB58, MYB75, GRAS SCARECROW, AtC3H14 zinc finger, SHINE2, and IFL1 genes and in the AtMIR397a. The purpose of this research thesis has been to investigate the current state of base station security in wireless sensor networks and to evaluate the potential effectiveness of how candidate base stations can be utilized in delivering interactive enhanced base station security by improving the existing security protocols currently in use. Base station security protocols are evaluated, candidate base stations are extensively discussed, including the suggested candidate base station algorithms. Features and structures of currently available base stations and sensor nodes are addressed. Possibilities of compromising base stations and their possible solutions are discussed.The major contribution of this thesis is it's furthering of the understanding of the security protocols, models, methodologies and algorithms that can be used in ensuring base station security, availability, efficiency and effectiveness in wireless sensor networks. This thesis demonstrates how candidate base stations are fitted in the base station security protocols and how they can be used to provide a meaningful analysis of increased base station security. In addition to the specific results presented, the collective wisdom provided by the discussion of the methodologies, protocols, models and algorithms throughout this thesis, provides valuable insight for others in the same area of research.
