Investigation of the medium calcium based non-burnt brick made by red mud and fly ash: durability and hydration characteristics

Red mud is a type of highly alkaline waste residue produced in the process of alumina smelting by the Bayer *** on the idea of medium calcium content,solid wastes such as red mud and fly ash were used to prepare non-burnt bricks;and the mass ratio of CaO/SiO2 was selected in the range of 0.88–*** properties and durability were investigated with a compressive strength test.X-ray diffractometry(XRD),scanning electron microscope(SEM),and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)techniques were used to characterize the hydration *** environmental performance was analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry(ICP).The results indicated that the mechanical properties and the durability were optimal when the mass ratio of CaO/SiO2 was *** hydration products were mostly C–S–H gel,ettringite,Na4Ca(Si10All6)O32·12H2O and Ca3Al2(SiO4)(OH)*** were responsible for the strength development,and the CaO/SiO2 mass ratio of 1.23 had the best polymerized *** results of an environmental performance test showed that the heavy metals in the raw materials were well-solidified in the ***,this paper provides an effective solution for use of solid wastes in building material.

Properties of Rapid Hardening Controlled Low Strength Material Made of Recycled Fine Aggregate from Urban Red brick Construction Waste

In some cases of emergency backfill engineering projects, traditional backfill materials cannot meet the requirements of fast construction due to their long curing time. This study presents a new kind of rapid hardening controlled low strength material, which utilizes both rapid hardening sulphoaluminate cement and recycled fine aggregate from urban red brick construction waste. Totally, sixteen mixtures were prepared for the experiment with different cement-to-sand ratios and water-to-solid ratios. The flowability and bleeding rate of fresh mixture were measured to evaluate its workability, and the compressive strength of hardened mixture was tested to evaluate its rapid hardening and mechanical properties. Test results indicate that rapid hardening controlled low strength material containing recycled fine aggregate from urban red brick construction waste can achieve the desirable flowability, but the bleeding rate increases with the increase of flowability. In addition, 2-hour compressive strength can reach 0.08 - 0.12 MPa, and 4-hour compressive strength is 0.32 - 1.54 MPa, which can meet the requirements of emergency backfill construction. At last, based on the derived compressive strength, a fitting model for predicting compressive strength evolution of this new rapid hardening backfill material is developed, which fits accurately with these experimental data.

Effect of Incorporation of Chips and Wood Dust Mahogany on Mechanical and Acoustic Behavior of brick Clay

An experimental study was carried out on bricks using local materials in order to take into account the waste wood management to protect the environment and to reduce the cost of the habitat. Chips and sawdust were built-in clay bricks in order to study their influence on the compressive strength, Young’s modulus and the speed for soundproofing. Testings in compressive strength were made on the parallelepiped clay bricks, stabilized with different percentages of cement, with incorporation to various percentages of sawdust or wood chips (Mahogany), using a universal press. Young’s modulus was measured from the speed of sound by the ultrasonic method. The results obtained show that the incorporation of mahogany tree chips in the stabilized brick at 8% of cement, does not have much effect on the compressive strength. It was found that the incorporation of chips or sawdust on the clay brick, does not improve the compressive strength. The Young’s modulus decreases with increasing content of sawdust and practically remains constant regardless of the content of chips at 4% and 6% of cement. The clay brick mixed with 8% of mahogany sawdust can be an acoustic barrier.

Performance of a Panelized brick Veneer Wall System under Lateral Loads

This paper discusses the performance of a proposed panelized brick veneer over steel stud backup wall system and seismic isolation connections under lateral loads. The panelized wall system was developed to address some shortcomings of the conventional brick veneer wall type. The details of the system are briefly introduced. The study evaluated the performance of the system under out-of-plane simulated wind loads and in-plane cyclic loads using full-scale laboratory experiments. The test setup, test specimen, test procedure, and test results are presented and the performance of the system is evaluated accordingly.

Improvement of Fe(Ii)-Adsorption Capacity of Feooh-Coated brick in Solutions, and Kinetics Aspects

The adsorbent, iron oxy-hydroxide coated brick, was used in the present work for removal of iron(II) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption performances of this composite were significantly improved when brick pellets (as a support material) were pre-treated in a 6 M HCl solution at 90°C for 6 hours, when compared to untreated ones and those pre-washed in a 1M HCl solution at RT for 1 day. This phenomenon was attributed to larger surface areas measured for modified brick by BET, thus enabling a better FeOOH deposition. The ability of this new composite to better adsorb Fe2+ ions from synthetic solutions was evidenced from fixed-bed column experiments: data were compared to those obtained from raw brick and iron oxides - coated sand columns. The adsorption mechanism followed better pseudosecond-order reaction kinetics, suggesting a chemisorption process, and the rate constant increased with a temperature increase, revealing the endothermic nature of Fe(II) adsorption. Furthermore, the equilibrium data fitted the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum monolayer sorption capacity Qmax = 0.669 mg/g and a Langmuir constant KL = 0.659 L/mg at room temperature. The activation energy (Ea) of Fe(II) adsorption and the changes in entropy (ΔS), enthalpy (ΔH) and free energy (ΔG) of activation were determined, with values suggesting the involvement of an activated chemical adsorption and an associative mechanism.

Changes in Soil Properties with Distance in brick Kiln Areas around Barisal

The study was conducted to evaluate the changes in soil properties due to the impacts of brick kiln in the vicinity of the Kirtonkhola River, Barisal. The study was carried out by determining the physical, physico-chemical and chemical characteristics of soil. During the entire study period, moisture content of soil ranged from 18.77% to 56.49%;bulk density and particle density varies from 0.23 - 0.53 g/cm3 and 1.11 - 3.15 g/cm3, respectively;soil porosity varies from 60.36% to 88.14%;pH varies from 6.98 to 8.85 and organic carbon content varies from 0.22% to 1.4%. The finding revealed that the pH of the soil decreased with increasing distance from the kiln;moisture content and organic carbon increased with distance;particle density was more or less in ideal condition for plant growth but bulk density and porosity indicates poor soil structure which is unfavourable for plant.

Implication of Electrostatic Forces on the Adsorption Capacity of a Modified brick for the Removal of Divalent Cations from Water

Adsorption properties of brick for the removal of divalent cations increased significantly after this material were pre-activated by HCl and subsequently impregnated with ferrihydrite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis demonstrated that ferrihydrite was preferentially attached to clays (mainly to metakaolinite) and possessed Na atoms at levels higher than those observed in iron-poor aggregates. Sodium is bound to hydroxyl groups which have a function as reactive sites and give rise to surface charge. Zeta potential measurements were conducted to determine the isoelectric point (IEP) and salt-addition method was used to assess the point of zero charge (PZC) of this brick. Modified brick has a positive charge in water up to pH ≈ 3.2 and negative charge above this pH. Moreover, pH was found to be the most important factor affecting the adsorption process, suggesting the possible implication of electrostatic forces at the brick-water interface. The complexation model proposed by James and Healy was applied to our system: theoretical data on free-energy changes due to effects associated both with electrostatic attraction and solvation, were found to be in agreement with those determined from kinetic experiments. Column experiments permitted further to show that adsorption reactions were strongly inhibited by addition of an inert electrolyte (like NaNO3). Under this condition, ionic strength increased and most surface sites of the brick would be occupied by Na+ ions, leading to a charge neutralization and thereby a depletion of electrostatic forces.
