Performed in this work are complex statistical,fractal and singular analyses of phase properties inherent to birefringence networks of protein crystals consisting of optically-thin layers prepared from blood *** the framework of a statistical approach,the authors have investigated values and ranges for changes of statistical moments of thefirst to the fourth orders that characterize coordinate distributions for phase shifts between orthogonal components of amplitudes inherent to laser radiation transformed by blood plasma with various *** the framework of the fractal approach,determined are the dimensions of self-similar coordinate phase distributions as well as features of transformation of logarithmic dependences for power spectra of these distributions for various types of hominal mammary gland pathologies.

We numerically study the propagation of 1-ps laser pulse in three tapered holey fibers （THFs）.The curvature indices of the concave,linear,and convex tapers are 2.0,1.0,and 0.5,*** central wavelength,located in the normal dispersion regime,is 800 *** nonlinear coefficient of the THFs increases from the initial 0.095 m-1· W-1 to the final 0.349 m-1·*** breaking accompanied by oscillatory structures occurs near pulse edges,and sidelobes appear in the pulse *** the increase in propagation distance z,the pulse shape becomes broader and the pulse spectrum flattens.A concave THF is advantageous to the generation of wave breaking and enables easier achievement of super flat spectra at short lengths.

A novel structure reducing diameter polarization maintaining optical fiber with high birefringence and strength is introduced. The fiber is fabricated through using modified chemical vapor deposition （MCVD） method, which is able to produce the optimum predicted eharacter-1 shaped fiber structure. As a result, a low-loss fiber with beat length close to 2.0 mm at 1310 nm wavelength and extinction ratio approximately -25 dB has been produced. The process is both simple and reproducible.

In order to explain the opposite phase matchability of two types of newly discovered chalcogenides, AX2MQ6 vs AX4M5Q12 belonging to the same R3 space group, the linear and nonlinear optical properties are calculated. The calculated Electron Localization Function（ELF） show the acentricity of the bonds on the Q^2- ions with sp^3 hybridization is the main origin of the optical anisotropy. To quantify such an acentricity, a geometric parameter, the dihedral angle between the tetrahedral undersides and the xy-planes is defined. And the calculated birefringence depends on the above defined geometric parameter and the ion radius. This correlation reasonably explains the opposite phase matchability of two closely related chalcogenide families of AX2MQ6 and AX4M5Q12 and is shedding useful light on further exploration on phase matchable IR-NLO crystals.

By considering the cross phase modulation （XPM） between the two orthogonal poparization components, the nonlinear birefringence and nonlinear polarization evolution （NPE） in highly-nonlinear fiber （HNLF）, as well as the unequal evolutions of the state of polarization （SOP） between the clockwise （CW） and counter-clockwise （CCW） waves in a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror （NALM） are analyzed. It is pointed out that the traditional cosine expression is no longer valid for the power transmission of NALM due to uncompleted interference under the high power condition. The analytical expression considering NPE effect is derived, and the experimental result is presented.

When circularly polarized light travels through a ferrofluid film in the presence of an applied magnetic field, the transmitted light will behave as elliptically polarized light, because of magnetic birefringence and dichroism. The angular distribution of the relative intensity of the transmitted light can be obtained using a polarizer, so that the ratio of both the long and short ax- es-as well as the orientation angle of the ellipse, corresponding to the direction of the applied magnetic field--can be deter- mined, and whether the ferrofluids samples are stable during the measurement can be directly judged from the shape of the distribution curves. Thus, the ratio of the amplitudes Ax/Ay and the added phase difference A r can be resolved in the elliptically polarized light, and information on both the magnetic birefringence An and the dichroism Ak can be deduced for the ferrofluid sample. From the orientation angles of both right-handed and left-handed elliptically polarized transmitted light, the direction of the applied magnetic field can be accurately determined. Using circularly polarized light, the magnetic birefringence and dichroism of pure γ-Fe2O3 ferrofluids and γ--Fe2O3/ZnFe2O4 binary ferrofluids were studied. For the binary ferrofluids, a mod- ulating effect on the magnetic birefringence and dichroism was revealed.

We report on the use of a fiber-based Mueller-matrix optical coherence tomography(OCT)system with continuous source-polarization modulation for in vivo imaging of early stages of skin cancer in SENCAR mice.A homemade hand-held probe with integrated optical scanning and beam delivering optics was coupled in the sample *** OCT images show the morphological changes in skin resulting from pre-cancerous papilloma formations that are consistent with histology,thus demonstrating the system’s potential for early skin cancer detection.

A novel tunable multi-wavelength fiber ring laser based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is proposed by using a high-birefringence (Hi-Bi) fiber loop mirror (FLM) as wavelength filter. With this configuration, the wavelength spacing of this laser can be varied by using the different lengths of Hi-Bi fiber. 8 wavelengths spacing on 450 GHz are experimentally obtained with more than 25-dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each channel using 1.28-m Hi-Bi fiber in Hi-Bi FLM. The output power variation between different channels is measured to be less than 5.9 dB. The linewidth of each channel is compressed from 0.347 to 0.186 nm by 1.5-m unpumped erbium-doped fiber (EDF). Meanwhile, 17 wavelengths spacing on ITU-gird (100 GHz) are also obtained with 5.9-m Hi-Bi fiber in Hi-Bi FLM. All these channels can be tuned together over 0.4 nm.

Collisions and Trapping of Time Delayed Solitons in Optical Waveguides with Orthogonally Polarized Modes

The interactions and collisions of time delayed solitons in optical waveguides with orthogonally polarized modes are studied. Direct numerical simulations of the coherently coupled nonlinear Schr¨odinger equations are performed,and neither the high birefringence nor the low birefringence approximations are invoked. Trapping of solitary pulses occurs when the birefringence parameter is small or the four-wave mixing parameter is large. The distance before the first collision depends strongly on the initial separation of the two solitary pulses. Variational techniques are employed to calculate this distance, and results agree with those from the full simulations very well.
