Potential use of hydrogen as future energy source is associated with a critical aspect of its production using sustainable technologies, and, in particular, the primary renewable energy sources. Amongst different technologies employed for hydrogen production from biomass, the gasification certainly represents one of the most potential and interesting options. gasification plants of low-to-medium thermal capacity appears to be of considerable interest as the same not only helps to optimize transport infrastructure and distribution of hydrogen locally, but eliminates large structural and distribution carrier, generally required in case of conventional energy as well. It is in the above context that three gasification plants of thermal capacity 1.3 MWt, 10 MWt and 20 MWt have been analyzed. It is noted that the plants under investigation could produce up to 20, 152 and 304 kg/h of hydrogen, respectively, and are suitable for the realization of stand-alone systems for the refueling of vehicles. Process based on the biomass gasification with oxygen and vapor that produces a gas with hydrogen content of 20%-30% (volumetric, dry), has been considered, and produced gas has been subjected to its cleaning, enrichment and separation as well.
