A comprehensive review of bio-oil, bio-binder and bio-asphalt materials: Their source, composition, preparation and performance

To promote the application of bio-materials and provide a direction for their further researches,this paper comprehensively summarizes the research progress of biomaterials in recent *** review results show that bio-oil is a mixture obtained from different biomasses through pyrolysis,alcoholysis,acidolysis,high liquefaction,etc.,and those biomasses mainly include wood fiber type,waste oil type and animal manure *** refers to the product of bio-oil processed by distillation,extraction oxidation and polymer modification,and it can be served as a modifier,diluent or substitute material of asphalt;the main chemical components of bio-oil include ethers,esters,aldehydes,ketones,phenols,organic acids,alcohols and ***-asphalt is obtained by adding biobinder into the petroleum asphalt for modification or blending,and the shear temperature and shear rate of bio-asphalt derived from wood fiber type and waste oil type are usually higher than that of bio-asphalt derived from swine *** with petroleum asphalt,bio-asphalt binder usually shows lower high-temperature performance as well as higher low-temperature performance and aging ***,bio-asphalt mixture generally exhibits lower high-temperature stability,higher low-temperature crack resistance and water stability than petroleum asphalt *** studies should be conducted combining with the source,composition,preparation,properties and oil production rate of ***,how to raise the bio-binder content in bio-asphalt as much as possible while ensuring the sufficient performance becomes the focus of future ***,the micro reaction mechanism between bio-binder and petroleum asphalt should be illustrated in ***,developing a complete and unifying technical standard and application specification of bio-asphalt technology is necessary for future ***,determining the optimum bio-binder potentially used as the substitute of petroleum aspha

The objective of this paper is to establish the state of knowledge on fast pyrolysis of bio-oil and bio-asphalt binder and to facilitate efforts in improving the overall perform ance of bioasphalt and maximizing its road *** the basis of reviewing the relevant literature recently,the fast pyrolysis(FasP) preparation process of bio-oil and its main properties,the preparation process of bio-asphalt and its performance and the application of bio-asphalt have been *** to the variations in raw materials,the adopted methods of FasP to prepare bio-oil could be different,and the properties of bio-oil from different sources are also *** present,the plant-based bio-oil(mainly derived from wood waste and sawdust) has been widely used to prepare the *** on the low-temperature flexibility,high-temperature rheology,workability and other performance of biological asphalt showed that the workability and high-temperature performance of most asphalt are improved after adding ***,the low-temperature performance is found to relatively ***,with regards to its application as a rejuvenator,bio-oil can considerably rejuvenate the aged asphalt’s mixture *** far,most of research on bio-asphalt is still focused on the performance of bio-asphalt binder in the laboratory;its application in practical road engineering is still to be *** review also provides an outlook for the future,for example,establishing an integrated preparation process from bio-oil to bio-asphalt,and evaluating the properties of bioasphalt by new standards.

bio-asphalt has a great application prospect in the replacement of petroleum-based asphalt to pave and maintain asphalt pavement. However, the problems of flow-induced crystallization and phase separation caused by flowinduced crystallization had severely restricted its application. This paper describes the progress of research on preparation, property evaluation and phase separation mechanism of bio-asphalt. The advantages and disadvantages of preparation methods of bio-asphalt are states. The fundamental physical and rheological properties of bio-asphalt are investigated, especially for flow-induced crystallization. There exists obvious flow-induced crystallization because bio-asphalt is rich in waxes that crystallize easily. Owing to the existence of excess biochar,bio-asphalt appears phase separation. A brief review of the effect of bio-oil and biochar on asphalt volatile organic compounds(VOCs) is presented. Research find that bio-oil/biochar are not only replenish the light components of asphalt, but also improve the flow-induced crystallization and phase separation of bio-asphalt. There exists synergistic effect of biochar and bio-oil in asphalt modification. Moreover, biochar can improve the durability of bio-oil modified asphalt, but excessive addition of biochar to bio-oil modified asphalt can cause phase *** an appropriate amount of bio-oil and biochar to asphalt can improve its high-temperature resistance, lowtemperature crack resistance, and system compatibility.
