1.Introduction There is a growing body of research supporting the idea that a plethora of health benefits can result from resistance training using a low volume,high-effort approach(e.g.,increased metabolic rate and bone mineral density,a reduction in blood pressure,and improved muscle quality and insulin sensitivity,among others.Further,muscular strength and muscle massprimary goals and benefits of participation in resistance trainingare independently strong predictors of longevity and quality of life. Thus,many have sought to identify how the manipulation of resistance training variables might lead to“optimal”adaptations in such outcomes,as evidenced by repeated attempts over recent decades to review the literature and provide consensus statements on this topic.5-10 One variable that is often hotly debated within resistance training is training to failure.

Delta-matroid theory is often thought of as a generalization of topological graph theory.It is well-known that an orientable embedded graph is bipartite if and only if its Petrie dual is orientable.In this paper,we first introduce the concepts of Eulerian and bipartite delta-matroids and then extend the result from embedded graphs to arbitrary binary delta-matroids.The dual of any bipartite embedded graph is Eulerian.We also extend the result from embedded graphs to the class of delta-matroids that arise as twists of binary matroids.Several related results are also obtained.

Recently, deep neural networks(DNNs) significantly outperform Gaussian mixture models in acoustic modeling for speech recognition. However, the substantial increase in computational load during the inference stage makes deep models difficult to directly deploy on low-power embedded devices. To alleviate this issue,structure sparseness and low precision fixed-point quantization have been applied widely. In this work, binary neural networks for speech recognition are developed to reduce the computational cost during the inference stage.A fast implementation of binary matrix multiplication is introduced. On modern central processing unit(CPU)and graphics processing unit(GPU) architectures, a 5–7 times speedup compared with full precision floatingpoint matrix multiplication can be achieved in real applications. Several kinds of binary neural networks and related model optimization algorithms are developed for large vocabulary continuous speech recognition acoustic modeling. In addition, to improve the accuracy of binary models, knowledge distillation from the normal full precision floating-point model to the compressed binary model is explored. Experiments on the standard Switchboard speech recognition task show that the proposed binary neural networks can deliver 3–4 times speedup over the normal full precision deep models. With the knowledge distillation from the normal floating-point models, the binary DNNs or binary convolutional neural networks(CNNs) can restrict the word error rate(WER) degradation to within 15.0%,compared to the normal full precision floating-point DNNs or CNNs, respectively. Particularly for the binary CNN with binarization only on the convolutional layers, the WER degradation is very small and is almost negligible with the proposed approach.

Existing temporal segmentation methods suffer from the problems of high computational complexity and complicated steps. To address this issue, we present a method that combines the binary tree and spatio-temporal tunnel(STT) for temporal segmentation of rough videos. First, we compute initial cumulative spatio-temporal flow to determine flow overflow of sub-video which is divided from a rough video. Second, the decision tree is generated by combining binary tree and balance factor to dynamically adjust the sampling line of the STT. Finally, pixels on the sampling line are extracted to generate an adaptive STT for temporal proposals. Experimental results show that the computational complexity of the proposed method is significantly better than that of the comparison methods while ensuring accuracy.

In this work,mixing and segregation of binary mixtures involving biomass materials in a fluidized bed was experimentally investigated.A frozen bed method was employed to investigate both axial and radial distribution of biomass particles in silica sand.Three different biomass materials were studied:willow sawdust,pelletized soy and oat hull materials.Biomass loading investigated ranged from 5% to 30% by weight.The extent of mixing for each of the biomass composition was investigated using Lacey’s mixing index which is based on the standard deviations of the sample at different axial positions in the bed.The radial composition was also investigated by means of digital imaging analysis using a high-resolution digital camera.The experiments revealed the differences in the extent of particle distribution for pelletized biomass materials vs non-densified materials as a result of differences in particle size,density and importantly,the particle shape of the materials utilized.The results showed an increase in the extent of mixing as the fluidizing velocity increased for both pellet materials while the mixing index for sawdust decreased beyond a loading of 20%.With an increase in biomass loading,an increase in mixing index was found for the two pellet materials.A similar trend was observed for sawdust at the lower loading level.However,the mixing index started to decrease at higher loading level beyond 20%.The results greatly contributed to the understanding of the hydrodynamics of binary and multicomponent mixtures involving biomass materials,especially pelletized materials in fluidized beds.

In order to further verify the accuracy and feasibility of the calculated mass action concentrations Ni of Al and Fe by the developed atom and molecule coexistence theory(AMCT)model,i.e.,AMCT-N,model,for representing activities aR,i of Al and Fe in Fe-Al binary melts reported in the first part of the serial studies,the molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Fe-Al binary melts over a temperature range from 1823 to 1973 K have been calculated based on Ni of Al and Fe as well as the effect of temperature on activity coefficients 7,of Al and Fe as■lnγj/■T=■ln(Ni/xi)/dT by the developed AMCTN-Ni model,where T is absolute temperature and.v,is the mole fraction of element i or compound i in metallic melts.The reported molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Fe-Al binary melts as well as the reported excess molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Fe-Al binary melts relative to ideal solution as a basis from the available literatures have been critically assessed and applied as criteria to verify the developed AMCT-Al,model.The effect of changing temperature onγi of Al and Fe,i.e.,activity coefficient gradients■lnγAl/■T and■lnγFe/■T,which are two indispensable parameters to calculate the molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Fe-Al binary melts,can be accurately obtained by the developed AMCT-Ni,model and expressed by the cubic polynomial functions.Not only the partial molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Al and Fe in Fe-Al binary melts but also the integral molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Fe-Al binary melts can be accurately calculated by the developed AMCT-Al,model.Furthermore,the excess partial and integral molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Fe-Al binary melts relative to ideal solution as a basis can also be precisely calculated by the developed AMCT-Ni,model.

Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of adding fines on the tribo-charging of coarse glass beads. Four types of fines, i.e., copper, stainless steel, uncoated and silver-coated fine glass beads, mixed w让h 240-830 μm glass beads were conveyed by air through a stainless-steel spiral pipe acting as a tribo-charger. Regardless of the type or electrical conductivity of the fine particles tested, adding small amounts of fines (up to 10wt%) to coarse glass beads resulted in a sharp increase in the mass and surface charge densities of the particles. In gen eral, the profiles of the mass and surface charge den sides of the fine-coarse particle mixtures as a function of the mixture composition were determined by the relative magnitude of contact potential differences and the total surface areas of all the comp on ents. The domi nant particle tri bo-electrification mecha nism switched from coarse particle-wall con tacts to fine particle-wall contacts when the fines weight percentage in the mixture exceeded 10%. A model was developed to predict the mass charge density of bi nary mixtures as a function of the mixture composition.

Several image-based biomedical diagnoses require high-resolution imaging capabilities at large spatial scales.However,conventional microscopes exhibit an inherent trade-off between depth-of-field(DoF)and spatial resolution,and thus require objects to be refocused at each lateral location,which is time consuming.Here,we present a computational imaging platform,termed E2E-BPF microscope,which enables large-area,high-resolution imaging of large-scale objects without serial refocusing.This method involves a physics-incorporated,deep-learned design of binary phase filter(BPF)and jointly optimized deconvolution neural network,which altogether produces high-resolution,high-contrast images over extended depth ranges.We demonstrate the method through numerical simulations and experiments with fluorescently labeled beads,cells and tissue section,and present high-resolution imaging capability over a 15.5-fold larger DoF than the conventional microscope.Our method provides highly effective and scalable strategy for DoF-extended optical imaging system,and is expected to find numerous applications in rapid image-based diagnosis,optical vision,and metrology.

We simulated a lab-scale cold-flow spouted bed through computational fluid dynamics (CFD), coupled with the discrete element method (DEM) for the solid phase, using a commercial CFD program, ANSYS FLUENT 18.0. To limit the computational expense, we tested both a simplified pseudo-2D geometry and a complete 3D geometry. We found that the Haider and Levenspiel drag model is suitable for the pseudo-2D geometry;however, this model does not correctly predict fluidisation in the 3D geometry. Conversely, the Gidaspow drag model behaves accurately in the 3D geometry but overestimates the motion of particles in the pseudo-2D geometry. We studied several single-solid and binary mixtures to assess the reproducibility of segregation phenomena. The pseudo-2D model was able to predict the onset and minimum spouting flow rates of all mixtures with good accuracy. An analysis of the volume fraction contours of the binary mixtures permitted us to confirm that segregation phenomena were correctly predicted at low gas velocities. We showed that segregation decreased as the inlet gas flow rate was increased. Calculations performed in the complete 3D geometry were preliminarily assessed as more reliable but required almost four times as much computational time as those for the pseudo 2D geometry.

The EMMS/bubbling model originally proposed for fluidization of monodisperse particles is extended to fluidization of binary particle mixture in this study.The dense and dilute phases are considered to comprise of two types of particles differing in size and/or density.Governing equations and the stability condition are then formulated and solved by using an optimization numerical scheme.The effects of bubble diameter are first investigated and a suitable bubble diameter correlation is chosen.Preliminary validation for steady state behavior shows the extended model can fairly capture the overall hydrodynamic behaviors in terms of volume fraction of bubbles and average bed voidage for both monodisperse and binary particle systems.This encourages us to integrate this model with CFD for more validations in the future.
