Dielectric data for volcanic scoria and basalt on the earth at microwave frequency are extremely sparse, and also crucial for volcanic terrains imaging, and development. In consideration of their similarity to lunar regolith (soils and rocks) in chemical and mineral composition, the dielectric data is significative for passive and active microwave remote sensing on the Moon. This study provides the data about the dielectric properties of three kinds of scoria and two kinds of basalt in China. The method put forward in this paper is also applicable for measuring the dielectric properties of dry rocks and other granular ground materials with low complex dielectric constants. Firstly, the authors measured the e' and tanδ values of strip specimens prepared from the mixture of scoria or basalt powder and polythene with the resonant cavity perturbation method at 9370 MHz. Secondly, from the ε' and tanδ values of the mixture, the ε' s and tanδ s values of solid scoria and basalt were calculated using Lichtenecker's mixture formulae. Finally, the effective complex dielectric constants, ε' e and tanδ e , of scoria at different bulk densities were calculated. The results have shown that the ε' s and tanδ s values of all solid basaltic materials measured (both solid basaltic scoria or basalt) are approximately 7 and 0.05, respectively. With increasing bulk density of scoria, the ε' c and tanδ e values of scoria increase significantly.

Variation of iron valence and concentration in solution and on sample surface associatedwith basalt-water interaction have been studied in different acidities and concentrations of dissolved oxygen(D.O.)with experimental simulating *** results show:i)Ferrous and ferric iron dissolve fromthe basalt surface and go into the solution during the basalt-water interaction; ii)In the stronger acidic so-lution,dissolved ferric ion is reduced into ferrous ion and the latter exists stably in the solution,so inthe solution the concentration of ferrous ion increases and that of ferric ion decreases;iii)In the weakeracidic or basic solution,because the dissolved ferric ion combines with OH~- to form Fe(OH)3,which issorbed on the sample surface,the content of iron on sample surface rises after the reaction;iv)Dissolvedoxygen in solution participates in the redox of *** to these facts,the mechanism of oxidation-reduction of iron is made in the process of basalt-water interaction.

The physical and mechanical properties of a certain type of rock is helpful in understanding the rock properties and regional engineering. The measurement data on basalt is obtained from 160 boreholes in Mumbai peninsula. Based on statistical analysis and data fitting methods, the basalt rock density, uniaxial compressive strength, point load strength, uniaxial tensile strength, elastic modulus and Poisson ratio are studied and their correlations are analyzed. The results show that the physical and mechanical properties of basalt have discrete and regional characteristics, so the universal empirical values and empirical functions are not recommended to be directly applied in engineering. There was a weak correlation between uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus, demonstrating that the rock elastic modulus determined by traditional MR ratio method should be verified. The elastic modulus is strongly related with the rock density, thus a regression equation with high accuracy is calculated by using the quadratic or cubic equation of rock density. The classification of weathering grade based on rock quality designation(RQD) is easily used in the shield construction. But rock density and RQD are recommended in the support design. © 2020, Science Press. All right reserved.

92 soil samples were collected from granite, basalt and limestone areas of eastern China and determined for 13 trace element contents. The geographical tendencies of and factors affecting trace element contents in soils were *** sequences of soil trace element contents (especially the transitional elements in the 4th period) were: basalt soils > limestone soils > granite *** contents of trace elements in soils of granite areas and basalt areas showed great inheritance of trace element contents from the relevant parent rocks. The contents of trace elements in limestones were very low, but they became very high in limestone soils. Trace element contents of soils derived from limestone and basalt'increased significantly from north to south, these tendencies were similar to the tendency of ferric oxide contents in *** were differences of contents of trace elements bound to ferric oxide in different kinds of parent material and in different types of soil. The correlations between the contents of trace elements and the contents of ferric oxide were better in basalt soils than in granite soils.

Our understanding of solid earth is from the surface, but the depth we can reach is very limited. So, most of the interpretations of geological processes and mechanisms extrapolated from all kinds of the surface phenomena is greatly uncertain. Recently many researchers concentrate their efforts to the geological and geophysical studying of the deep processes of the solid earth. The International Lithosphere Project (ILP) started in 1981 now is also a frontier field. One of the concentrations of this project is the 3\|D structure, tectonic evolution and the dynamic models of lithosphere\|asthenosphere system (Li Xiaobo etc., 1997). The studying of the igneous rocks and bearing deep\|seated xenoliths, as one of the effective methods probing the structure and evolution of the lithosphere, plays a very important role in these aspects (Deng Jinfu et al., 1996; Lu Fengxiang, 1997).Commonly, magmas come to the surface in great speed and the covering lithosphere should be relatively thinner. For example, the thickness of the lithosphere in East China is about 60～80km in the era when the volcanoes erupted (Deng Jinfu et al. 1994). Recently, many deep\|seated xenoliths were found in several localities of southwest Tianshan (Han Baofu et al., 1998). But in Qinghai—Xizang plateau, “So far no any xenoliths of mantle rocks as peridotites, lherzolites and harzburgites and high pressure granulites were found (Deng Wanming et al., 1997)”.. But in the fieldwork of 1998 we find some deep\|seated xenoliths in Cenozoic basaltic rocks in Kangxiwa region, West Kunlun, China. This work is a part of the project “XinJiang DuShanZi—QuanShuiGou transect” managed by academician Xiao Xuchang.

The peridotite xenoliths are widely distributed in the Cenozoic basalts, Eastern China. However, their petrogenesis is hotly controversial. The peridotite xenoliths of Nanjing are found embedded in Cenozoic alkali basalt. Most of the xenoliths are rounded and small to moderate in size(typically 5~10 cm in diameter), though larger ones have been found. Nearly all small xenoliths are harzburgite and dunite. However, the big ones have zoned structure: lherzolite core and harzburgite or dunite rim with new growth clinopyroxene(Cpx) as eyeliner along their margins. Petrology, mineralogy, and Major and trace element compositions of the Nanjing peridotite xenoliths in the Cenozoic basalts are measured to provide an insight into the nature of their mantle sources and processes. Our works suggest that they were suffered from a partial melting process and subsequently underwent a process of melt-peridotite interaction. The evidences of partial melting are as follows. Firstly, the lherzolite core is mostly composed of olivine(Ol) + orthopyroxene(Opx) + Cpx with minor spinel(Spl), however, the harzburgite or dunite rim is mostly complosed of Ol + Opx with minor Cpx. Secondly, from the lherzolite core to the harzburgite or dunite rim, Ol and Opx contents are gradually increased, inversely, Cpx contents are decreased, and the Spl disappears. Thirdly, Mg# values of Ol are increased from the core(~89.5) to the rim(>92) of the peridotite xenolith, but FeO contents(from 11.0 to 8.1) in Ol are ***, Mg#(from 90 to 93) and Cr#(from 4 to 17) values of the Opx are increased, but its Al2O3 contents(from 5.0 to 2.0) are decreased from the core to the rim. The evidences of meltperidotite interaction are mostly from clinopyroxenes. The clinopyroxenes can roughly divided into two groups: original clinopyroxenes of the peridotite and new growth clinopyroxenes generated by melt-peridotite interaction. This research is conducted to study the experimental behavior of composite steel-concrete columns with basalt additives. Various percentages of basalt are added to the concrete mixes to investigate its effect on the total axial compressive capacity of the columns. Expected failure scenarios of the columns are: concrete compressive failure, buckling of steel section, and de-bonding between steel and concrete sections. A conventional limestone composite column was used as base mix. The results of the study indicate a significant improvement in structural behavior and strength of the columns by increasing the percentage of basalt content.

The flow and heat transfer of the basalt melt in the boundary layer on a flat plate is considered. The conditions of formation of the layer and the intensity of heat transfer are determined. A self-similar analysis using the symmetry method was used. A system of ordinary differential equations in self-similar form is obtained. The fluid flow and heat transfer of molten basalt at a laminar steady-state flow in the feeder furnaces are numerically researched. The term “protective layer” on the interface “basalt melt-lining” is introduced. The dependences for the calculation of dimensionless shear stresses and the Nusselt number on the lining surface are obtained. The conditions of rational organization of the technological process of basalt melt feeding in the furnace feeder are formulated.
