association mapping of lignin response to Verticillium wilt through an eight-way MAGIC population in Upland cotton

Lignin metabolism plays a pivotal role in plant defense against pathogens and is always positively correlated as a response to pathogen infection. Thus, understanding resistance genes against plant pathogens depends on a genetic analysis of the lignin response. This study used eight Upland cotton lines to construct a multi-parent advanced generation intercross(MAGIC) population(n=280), which exhibited peculiar characteristics from the convergence of various alleles coding for advantageous traits. In order to measure the lignin response to Verticillium wilt(LRVW), the artificial disease nursery(ADN) and rotation nursery(RN) were prepared for MAGIC population planting in four environments. The stem lignin contents were collected, and the LRVW was measured with the lignin value of ADN/RN in each environment, which showed significant variations. We employed 9 323 high-quality single-nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) markers obtained from the Cotton-SNP63K array for genotyping the MAGIC population. The SNPs were distributed through the whole genome with 4.78 SNP/Mb density, ranging from 1.14(ChrA06) to 10.08(ChrD08). In addition, a genome-wide association study was performed using a Mixed Linear Model(MLM) for LRVW. Three stable quantitative trait loci(QTLs), qLRVW-A04, qLRVW-A10, and qLRVW-D05, were identified in more than two environments. Two key candidate genes, Ghi_D05G01046 and Ghi_D05G01221, were selected within the QTLs through the combination of variations in the coding sequence, induced expression patterns, and function annotations. Both genes presented nonsynonymous mutations in coding regions and were strongly induced by Verticillium dahliae. Ghi_D05G01046 encodes a leucine-rich extensin(LRx) protein involved in Arabidopsis cell wall biosynthesis and organization. Ghi_D05G01221 encodes a transcriptional co-repressor novel interactor of novel interactor of jasmonic acid ZIM-domain(JAZ–NINJA), which functions in the jasmonic acid(JA) signaling pathway. A proposed association between subjective nonpulsatile tinnitus and migraine

Objective:Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound in the absence of an external source.We propose the hypothesis that migraine can cause exacerbation of tinnitus in some patients.Methods:English literature from PubMed has been reviewed.Results:Studies have reported a high prevalence of cochlear symptoms in patients with migraine headaches and up to 45%of tinnitus patients have been shown to concomitantly suffer from migraine.Both conditions are thought to stem from central nervous system disturbances,involving disruption of the auditory and trigeminal nerve pathways.One proposed mechanism of this association is the modulation of sound sensitivity by trigeminal nerve activation of the auditory cortex during migraine attacks,resulting in tinnitus fluctuation in some patients.Increased brain and inner ear vascular permeability resulting from trigeminal nerve inflammation,can also cause observed headache and auditory symptoms.Tinnitus and migraine also share a number of symptom triggers including stress,sleep disturbances,and dietary factors.These shared features may help explain promising results of migraine therapies for the treatment of tinnitus.Conclusion:Given the complex association between tinnitus and migraine,further investigation is needed to identify the underlying mechanisms and determine the optimal treatment strategies for managing migraine-related tinnitus patients.

Despite the planned installation and operations of the traditional IEEE 802.11 networks,they still experience degraded performance due to the number of inefficiencies.One of the main reasons is the received signal strength indicator(RSSI)association problem,in which the user remains connected to the access point(AP)unless the RSSI becomes too weak.In this paper,we propose a multi-criterion association(WiMA)scheme based on software defined networking(SDN)in Wi-Fi networks.An association solution based on multi-criterion such as AP load,RSSI,and channel occupancy is proposed to satisfy the quality of service(QoS).SDNhaving an overall view of the network takes the association and reassociation decisions making the handoffs smooth in throughput performance.To implementWiMA extensive simulations runs are carried out on Mininet-NS3-Wi-Fi network simulator.The performance evaluation shows that the WiMA significantly reduces the average number of retransmissions by 5%–30%and enhances the throughput by 20%–50%,hence maintaining user fairness and accommodating more wireless devices and traffic load in the network,when compared to traditional client-driven(CD)approach and state of the art Wi-Balance approach.

Problems of soil erosion and sedimentation are issues of global concern.With the intensification of global change and the impacts of human activities,many countries are facing severe challenges from wideranging sediment-related problems.The prevention and control of sediment disasters and the rational use of soil and sediment resources are important requirements for the sustainable development strategies of all countries.As sediment problems are closely related to social,economic,and other human activities,the effective solution of sediment problems requires the concerted efforts of experts in different fields and thus an interdisciplinary approach is essential.In view of the increasing recognition of sediment as a topic of global significance and the need to promote interdisciplinary research in this field,the World association for Sedimentation and Erosion Research(WASER) was inaugurated in 2004.In this paper the history of the establishment of WASER is reviewed and its main activities are briefly summarized.The series of International Symposia on River Sedimentation(ISRS) has served as the official symposium of WASER since 2004.These triennial technical events have been held in China,Russia,Japan,South Africa,and Germany with about 2,000 participants.In addition to sponsoring the ISRS,WASER has to date also sponsored/organized or co-sponsored/co-organized over 30 other international conferences,workshops,training courses,and study tours besides sponsoring the ISRSs.The adoption of the International Journal of Sediment Research(IJSR) as the official journal of WASER in 2004has also played an important role in increasing the exposure of the association.These activities have served to raise WASER’s profile as well as promoting collaboration with agencies and other organizations working in the field of erosion and sedimentation.Three types of prizes and honors are awarded by WASER.These include the International Qian Ning Prize for Erosion and Sedimentation Technology,the IJSR Award for Distinguished Contributions

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease triggered by genetic, environment or other risk factors such as infection, drugs, stress, moisture, alcohol, and smoking. A major psoriasis susceptibility locus at 6p21.3 has been identified. Further studies found that HLA-DQA1*0201 allele was associated with psoriasis. However, there were few data exploring an association between the environmental factors and susceptibility genes. In this study, the samples of 189 patients with psoriasis and 333 healthy controls were collected with their consent and were carried on analysis through polymerase chain reaction sequence-specific primer (PCR- SSP) method. The proportion of male psoriasis patients engaging in the smoking and alcohol was much higher than that of the control group (Passociation was found between smoking, alcohol and HLA-DQA1*0201 in male patients with psoriasis (OR>6.91, P<1.0×10–4).

Background： Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease （NAFLD） is one of the most common chronic liver diseases with a high prevalence in the general population. The association between NAFLD and cardiovascular disease has been well addressed in previous studies. However, whether NAFLD is associated with carotid artery disease in a community-based Chinese population remained unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between NAFLD and carotid artery disease. Methods： A total of 2612 participants （1091 men and 1521 women） aged 40 years and older from Jidong of Tangshan city （China） were selected for this study. NAFLD was diagnosed by abdominal ultrasonography. The presence of carotid stenosis or plaque was evaluated by carotid artery ultrasonography. Logistic regression was used to analyze the association between NAFLD and carotid artery disease. Results： Participants with NAFLD have a higher prevalence of carotid stenosis （12.9% vs. 4.6%） and carotid plaque （21.9% vs. 15.0%） than those without NAFLD. After adjusting for age, gender, smoking status, income, physical activity, diabetes, hypertension, triglyceride, waist-hip ratio, and high-density lipoprotein, NAFLD is significantly associated with carotid stenosis （odds ratio [OR]： 2.06, 95% confidence interval [CI]： 1.45-2.91）, but the association between NAFLD and carotid plaque is not statistically significant （OR： 1. 10, 95% CI： 0.86-1.40）. Conclusion： A significant association between NAFLD and carotid stenosis is found in a Chinese population.

association and differences in genetic polymorphisms in PCSK9 gene in subjects with lacunar infarction in the Han and Uygur populations of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China

Polymorphisms in the proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9（PCSK9） gene are associated with severe hypercholesterolemia and stroke. Here, we investigated the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms in PCSK9 and stroke in 237 patients with lacunar infarction in the Uygur and Han populations in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. Using the SNa Pshot single-base terminal extension method, four PCSK9 gene polymorphisms were analyzed. We found a significantly strong relationship between the PCSK9 rs17111503（G 〉 A） polymorphism and increased susceptibility to lacunar infarction by variant homozygote comparison, and using the dominant and recessive models in the Han population but not in the Uygur population. Low triglyceride levels were found in AA carriers（rs17111503, G 〉 A） in the Han population but not in the Uygur population. association analysis revealed that the rs17111503（G 〉 A） polymorphism was not significantly associated with smoking, alcohol drinking, history of hypertension or diabetes in the Han or Uygur lacunar infarction patients. rs11583680, rs483462 and rs505151 were not associated with risk of lacunar infarction in the Han or Uygur populations. Our findings suggest that the PCSK9 rs17111503（G 〉 A） polymorphism is associated with susceptibility to lacunar infarction in the Han population but not in the Uygur population.

Objective To determine the distribution of HLA-B alleles in the Chinese Yi ethnic group and its association with HIV infection. Methods One hundred and six unrelated healthy HIV negative and 73 HIV positive Chinese Yi ethnic individuals were typed by PCR-SSP. Results The frequency of alleles B*07, B*35, and B*46 were increased in HTV-1 -positive subjects, whereas the alleles B*55, B*44 and B*78 were absent in the HIV-infected persons studied. The B*46 allele was present in a significantly higher gene frequency among HIV-1-positive individuals (P=0.02, OR=3.32, 95% CI=1.13-9.78) compared with control subjects. Conclusion HLA-B*46 may be associated with its susceptibility to HIV-1 infections.

The relationship between the severity of dengue infection and allergy is still obscure. We conducted an electronic search across 12 databases for relevant articles reporting allergic symptoms, dengue infection, and dengue classification. These studies were categorized according to dengue severity and allergy symptoms, and a meta-analysis was performed by pooling the studies in each category. Among the included 57 articles, pruritus was the most common allergic sign followed by non-specified allergy and asthma(28.6%, 13%, and 6.5%, respectively). Despite the reported significant association of dengue with pruritus and total Ig E level(P \ 0.05), in comparison with non-dengue cases and healthy controls, there was no association between the different severe dengue group with pruritus, skin allergy, food allergy or asthma. However,removing the largest study revealed a significant association between asthma with dengue hemorrhagic fever(DHF) rather than dengue fever(DF). In comparison with DF, DHF was associated with Ig E positivity. Furthermore, specific-Ig E level was higher in secondary DF rather than primary DF. There was a possible association between allergy symptoms and dengue severity progression. Further studies are needed to clarify this association.

Background Genetic mechanisms contribute to blood pressure regulation. This study investigated whether glutathione peroxidase （GPx-3） tag single nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs） are associated with hypertension in the rural areas of Fuxin county, Liaoning province, China.Methods Indigenous Fuxin Han people participated, 523 unrelated hypertensives and 547 controls were recruited. All tag SNPs of GPx-3 gene were selected. We estimated SNP allele frequency in DNA pools with pyrosequencing.Results Before Bonferroni correction, C allele frequency for rs8177417 was significantly higher in hypertensives than those in controls （23.4% vs. 19.3%, P=0.014）; T allele frequency for rs3828599 was significantly lower in hypertensives than those in controls （35.6% vs. 40.8%,P=0.009）. However, when a Bonferroni correction for multiple testing was applied, only the polymorphisms rs3828599 of GPx-3 gene was associated with hypertension （P=0.045, OR： 0.833, 95%CI： 0.695-0.998）.Conclusion The polymorphism of rs3828599 of GPx-3 gene might be associated with hypertension in rural Han Chinese from Fuxin, Liaoning.
