AIM: To compare anxiety and depression levels in adult patients with celiac disease (CD) on a gluten-free diet (GFD) with controls.METHODS: The levels of anxiety, depression and of a probable anxiety or depressive disorder were assessed by the Hospital anxiety and Depression Scale in 441 adult patients with CD recruited by the German Celiac Society, in 235 age-and sex-matched patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in remission or with slight disease activity, and in 441 adult persons of a representative German general population sample (GP). Potential demographic (age, sex, social class, family status) and disease-related (latency to diagnosis, duration of GFD, compliance with GFD, thyroid disease) predictors of anxiety and depression in CD were tested for by regression analyses. RESULTS: The level of anxiety in CD patients was predicted (R 2 = 0.07) by female gender (P = 0.01). Female sex (OR = 3.6, 95% CI: 1.3-9.4, P = 0.01) was associated with a probable anxiety disorder. Living alone (OR = 0.5, 95% CI: 0.2-0.9, P = 0.05) was associated with a reduced risk of an anxiety disorder. The level of depression and a probable depressive disorder were not predicted by any of the demographic and medical variables tested for. The levels of anxiety in patients with CD (6.6 ± 3.4) and with IBD (6.9 ± 3.7) were higher than those of persons in the GP (4.6 ± 3.3) (both P anxiety disorder in persons with CD (16.8%) and IBD (14.0%) was higher than that of the GP (5.7%) (P anxiety in adult German female celiacs on a GFD is higher than in persons of the GP. Female celiacs on a GFD should be screened for anxiety.

Objective:In cardiovascular disease,a patient’s anxiety and depression can increase cardiac rehabilitation duration and recovery.Lavender aromatherapy as a non-pharmacological intervention effective in other contexts may be an efficient intervention to alleviating anxiety and depression in patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome(ACS).Methods:In this study,110 ACS patients were randomly assigned to two intervention and control groups.Inhalation of the lavender fragrance was prescribed for the intervention group and the drop of aromatic almond for the control group for 3 days.Results:The first-day anxiety and depression were significantly different in the two groups at 1 h and 9 h after the intervention.The’morning’s difference before the intervention was not significant,but it was substantial 1 h after the intervention.On the third morning of the intervention,this difference was confirmed.Conclusions:This study confirmed the effectiveness of lavender aromatherapy in reducing anxiety and depression in ACS patients.This’study’s results enable intensive care nurses to use aromatherapy with lavender oil as a non-pharmacological and cost-effective intervention to reduce their psychological tensions and increase patient satisfaction during hospitalization in the cardiac care units(CCU).

Effects of regulating intestinal microbiota on anxiety symptoms: A systematic review

Background anxiety symptoms are common in mental diseases and a variety of physical disorders, especially in disorders related to stress. More and more basic studies have indicated that gut microbiota can regulate brain function through the gut-brain axis, and dysbiosis of intestinal microbiota was related to anxiety. However, there is no specific evidence to support treatment of anxiety by regulating intestinal microbiota. Aims To find evidence sup porting improvement of anxiety symptoms by regulation of intestinal microbiota. Methods This systematic review of randomised controlled trials was searched based on the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, OVID, Web of Knowledge, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Data, VIP databases and SinoMed. The retrieval time dated back to 25 July 2018. Then we screened research literatures based on established inclusion and exclusion criteria. Quality evaluation for each included study was done using the Cochrane risk of bias and the Jadad scale. Results A total of 3334 articles were retrieved and 21 studies were included which contained 1503 subjects. In the 21 studies, 15 chose probiotics as interventions to regulate intestinal microbiota and six chose non-probiotic ways such as adjusting daily diets. Probiotic supplements in seven studies contained only one kind of probiotic, two studies used a product that contained two kinds of probiotics and the supplements used in the other five studies included at least three kinds of probiotics. In the studies that used treatment as usual plus interventions regulating intestinal flora (IRIF) as interventions (five studies), only non-probiotic ways were effective (two studies), which means 40% of studies were effective;in the studies that used IRIF alone (16 studies, 11 studies used probiotic ways and 5 studies used non-probiotic ways), 56% of studies could improve anxiety symptoms, and 80% of studies that conducted the non-probiotic interventions were effective, while 45% of studies that used

Comorbidity of bipolar and anxiety disorders:An overview of trends in research

Over the last three decades burgeoning research has shown that anxiety disorder comorbidity is not only highly prevalent in bipolar disorder(BD),but it also adversely impacts the course,outcome,and treatment of BD.The present review provides an overview of the current trends in research on comorbid anxiety and BDs based on prior reviews and meta-analyses(n=103),epidemiological surveys,and large-scale clinical studies.The results reiterated the fact that at least half of those with BD are likely to develop an anxiety disorder in their lifetimes and a third of them will manifest an anxiety disorder at any point of time.All types of anxiety disorders were equally common in BD.However,there was a wide variation in rates across different sources,with most of this discrepancy being accounted for by methodological differences between reports.Comorbid anxiety disorders negatively impacted the presentation and course of BD.This unfavourable clinical profile led to poorer outcome and functioning and impeded treatment of BD.Despite the extensive body of research there was paucity of data on aetiology and treatment of anxiety disorder comorbidity in BD.Nevertheless,the substantial burden and unique characteristics of this comorbidity has important clinical and research implications.

Evaluation of dry eye disease in newly diagnosed anxiety and depression patients using anterior segment optical coherence tomography

Background:We aimed to evaluate dry eye diseases(DED)in patients with newly diagnosed depression and anxiety patients.Methods:Forty newly diagnosed depression,35 anxiety patients,and 37 controls without any history of taking psychiatric drugs(or before the beginning of psychiatric medication)and topical ophthalmic drop use,were included in the study.All depression and anxiety diagnoses were performed by an experienced psychiatrist.Beck depression and anxiety tests were used to measure disease severity.Tear film break up time(TBUT),Schirmer’s test,Oxford scores and ocular surface disease index(OSDI)were admiinistered to participants.Anterior segment optical coherence tomography was used to measure tear meniscus heights(TMH),tear meniscus depths(TMD)and tear meniscus areas(TMA).Results:In anxiety and depression groups,Schirmer’s test(mm)(7.24±6.02,6.58±4.9 and 18.79±4.9 respectively,panxiety and depression groups compared with control groups.Correlations between disease inventory scores and dry eye tests were detected.Conclusions:This study showed a relation between DED and newly diagnosed anxiety and depression patients with no history of psychiatric drug use.The presence of correlation between dry eye tests and disease inventory scores strengthens this association.This is an important knowledge that need to be evaluated in these patients before starting psychiatric medication.

Purpose:This study sought to examine the anxiety and perception of nurses toward the outbreak of COVID‑19 in University of Uyo Teaching Hospital(UUTH).Two research questions one hypothesis were used.What is the level of anxiety among nurses toward the outbreak of COVID‑19?What is the perception of nurses toward the outbreak of COVID‑19?The hypothesis states that there is no significant relationship between anxiety and perception of nurses toward the outbreak of COVID‑19.Literature was reviewed based on the research variables.Methods:The research instrument used in collecting the data for the analysis was a questionnaire administered to 100 nurses in UUTH,Uyo.Their responses were analyzed using frequencies,percentages,and Chi‑square analysis,and the following results were obtained.Results:The results indicated that 36(36%)of the respondents strongly agreed that most nurses perceive that poor provision of equipment’s in the hospital result into the transmission of COVID‑19 to another person,35(35%)agreed,20(20%)of the respondents strongly agreed,whereas 9(9%)of the respondents disagreed.Majority of the respondents 56(56%)strongly agreed that nurses sometimes perceive that patients sometimes harbor COVID‑19 without showing the symptoms.Conclusion:The above data,therefore,showed that nurses in UUTH,Uyo,had moderate perception toward COVID‑19.

Chinese herbal medicine therapy for coronary heart disease complicated with anxiety: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials

OBJECTIVE:To evaluated the effectiveness and safety of Chinese herbal medicines(CHMs)for coronary heart disease(CHD)complicated with anxiety.METHODS:Randomized controlled clinical trials(RCTs)with parallel-groups were included after searching through electric-databases from inception to May,2017.Meta-analysis was undertaken with Rev Man 5.3 software.RESULTS:Twenty-three RCTs enrolling 1654 patients were included in this systematic review.The combination therapy(CHMs combined with anxiolytic)appeared to be superior to anxiolytic in terms of reducing the score of Zung Self-rating anxiety scale(SAS)(mean Difference(MD),-12.25;95%confidence interval(CI),-14.01 to-10.48,eliminating method;MD,-3.92;95%CI,-5.48 to-2.35,tranquilizing method),improving the total effect rate(relative risk(RR),1.26;95%CI,1.08 to 1.46,eliminating method)and reducing the TCM symptoms scores(MD,-2.24;95%CI,-4.25 to-0.23,tranquilizing method)with a lower incidence of adverse events(RR,0.46;95%CI,0.25 to 0.85,tonifying method).CHMs demonstrated benefits in lowering the score of Hamilton anxiety Rating scale(MD,-6.77;95%CI,-8.16 to-5.37,tonifying method),lowering the score of SAS(MD,-10.1;95%CI,-13.73 to-6.30,tonifying method)and reducing the TCM symptoms scores(MD,-2.18;95%CI,-3.12 to-1.24,tranquilizing method).CONCLUSION:We got a low evidence that CHMs,which had less side effects,showed potentially benefits to patients with CHD complicated with anxiety.While the results should be interpreted with caution.Trails with higher quality are required to verify the effectiveness and safety of CHMs for CHD complicated with anxiety.

How to deal with the negative psychological impact of COVID-19 for people who pay attention to anxiety and depression

Background:The fear of insecurity and uncertainty caused by the 2019 coronavirus disease(COVID-19),the separation and loss of certain important relationships,and great changes in lifestyle have awakened strong emotional responses,which may cause psychological problems in the general population.However,there is little research on how people who pay attention to anxiety and depression cope with the negative psychological impact during an epidemic or major disaster.This study aimed to identify what behaviors can effectively reduce negative emotions during an epidemic.Methods:From 1 February to 8 March 2020,we conducted a web-based survey and collected information on general demographic data.Probable depression,anxiety symptoms,and coping behaviors were assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9,Generalized anxiety Disorder-7,and self-made coping behaviors questionnaires.Result:Among 17249 responders,7923 and 9326 completed assessments of depression and anxiety respectively,and all responders completed the coping behaviors questionnaires.Our survey population showed a high prevalence rate of possible depression disorders(2746 of 7923,34.66%)and anxiety disorders(5309 of 9326,56.93%).Compared with other groups,the elderly,women,people of lower education,and people with lower income were more likely to suffer depression and/or anxiety.In terms of marital status,the cohabiting group showed the highest rate of depression and/or anxiety.Among the careers,students and housewives were high-risk groups suffering from depression and/or anxiety.After adjusting for social-demographic factors(e.***.age,sex),depression and anxiety were positively associated with self-injury,doing housework,and having sex or masturbating,and negatively associated with singing,drawing,or writing,dating friends online,singing,attending lectures,and doing yoga.Conclusion:Our findings identified some spontaneous coping behaviors that can probably relieve the psychological impact of vulnerable groups during the COVID-19 epidemic.

While limited advances have occurred in the past 30 years in the pharmacological management of anxiety and stressrelated disorders,novel molecular pathways both within and without the monoamine systems are currently under investigation and offer promising new avenues for more effective future treatments.Enhancing psychotherapy approaches with pharmacological compounds offers the potential to not only transform the standard of care of these conditions,but more broadly would introduce a paradigm shift in the way medications and their role in psychiatric care are conceptualised.Although further human trials and more translational research are sorely needed,continuing to pursue innovative mechanisms and treatments is hoped to yield substantial results in the coming decades and a departure from the reliance on chemical agents of the 20th century.

AIM To investigate the relation between plain water drinking and risk of depression and anxiety among a large sample of Iranian adults.METHODS A total of 3327 Iranian general adults were included in this cross-sectional study. Validated Iranian version of the Hospital anxiety and Depression Scale was used to assess anxiety and depression. Water consumption was assessed by asking about the number of glasses of water that consumed daily. Water consumption was categorized into anxiety(P anxiety(OR: 1.49; 95%CI: 0.98, 2.25; P = 0.109). In stratified analyses by sex, after controlling for potential confounders, water drinking anxiety either in men or in women.CONCLUSION We found inverse associations between plain water consumption and depression. Also, these findings showed a tended risky association, but not statistically significant, between lower levels of water consumption and anxiety. These findings warrant evaluation in prospective and clinical trials studies to establish the plausible role of water in mental health status.
