A series of N-（5-chloro-2-hydroxyphenyl）-（3/4/5-substituted）-salicylaldimines （I--XI） were synthesized using appropriate synthetic route. Their structures were characterized by FT-IR, UV-Visible, ESI-MS, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic techniques and analytical methods. The crystal structure of N-（5-chloro-2-hydroxyphenyl）-5-bromo- salicylaldimine （V） was determined by X-ray diffraction at room temperature. Relationship between the melting points and the structures of the compounds was examined. antimicrobial activity of the compounds was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis. Antifungal activities were reported for Candida albicans. Schiff bases showed considerable antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, S, epidermidis and C. albicans. N-（5-Chloro-2-hydroxyphenyl）-3-hydroxy-salieylaldimine （II） has the broadest and highest antimicrobial activity according to the others.

Infection in hard tissue regeneration is a clinically-relevant challenge.Development of scaffolds with dual function for promoting bone/dental tissue growth and preventing bacterial infections is a critical need in the field.Here we fabricated hybrid scaffolds by intrafibrillar-mineralization of collagen using a biomimetic process and subsequently coating the scaffold with an antimicrobial designer peptide with cationic and amphipathic properties.The highly hydrophilic mineralized collagen scaffolds provided an ideal substrate to form a dense and stable coating of the antimicrobial peptides.The amount of hydroxyapatite in the mineralized fibers modulated the rheological behavior of the scaffolds with no influence on the amount of recruited peptides and the resulting increase in hydrophobicity.The developed scaffolds were potent by contact killing of Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Streptococcus gordonii as well as cytocompatible to human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells.The process of scaffold fabrication is versatile and can be used to control mineral load and/or intrafibrillar-mineralized scaffolds made of other biopolymers.

antimicrobial drugs of several classes play an important role in the treatment of bone and joint infections. In addition to fighting pathogenic microorganisms, the effects of drugs on local tissues and cells are also related to the course and prognosis of bone and joint infections. The multi-directional differentiation potential of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is essential for tissue repair after local injury, which is directly related to the recovery of bone, cartilage, and medullary adipose tissue. Our previous studies and the literature indicate that certain antimicrobial agents can regulate the differentiation potential of bone marrow-derived MSCs. Here, in order to systematically analyze the effects of various antimicrobial drugs on local tissue regeneration, we comprehensively review the studies on the effects of these drugs on MSC differentiation, and classify them according to the three differentiation directions (osteogenesis, chondrogenesis, and adipogenesis). Our review demonstrates the specific effects of different antimicrobial agents on bone marrow-derived MSCs and the range of concentrations at which they work, and provides a basis for drug selection at different sites of infection.

“PlantNanOmics” is an emerging topic in agricultural research that explores the potential effect of application of nanomaterials on plant growth. Graphene oxide (GO) has excellent properties due to its basal carbon plane and oxygen-containing functional groups. In the present work, the antimicrobial activity of GO was exploited to extend the vase life and improve the quality of cut roses (cv. Carola). The results revealed that the cut roses cultivated in low doses of GO (0.1 mg/L) had longer vase life, larger diameter, and better water relations. Microbial contaminations at the basal stem end is the most common reason for stem blockage that causes water stress and early wilting of cut flowers. GO was found to act as a germicide, effectively inhibiting the microbial growth at the cut stem end and improving water uptake and water balance of cut roses. Therefore, GO can serve as a promising preservative to increase the ornamental value of cut flowers.

Development of Helicobacter pylori treatment: How do we manage antimicrobial resistance?

Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) antimicrobial resistance is an urgent, global issue. In2017, the World Health Organization designated clarithromycin-resistant H.pylori as a high priority bacterium for antibiotic research and development. In addition to clarithromycin, resistance to metronidazole and fluoroquinolones has also increased worldwide. Recent international guidelines for management of H.pylori infection recommend bismuth or non-bismuth quadruple therapy for 14 d as a first-line treatment for H. pylori in areas of high clarithromycin and/or metronidazole resistance. Although these treatment regimens provide acceptable H. pylori eradication rates, the regimens used should not contribute to future resistance of H. pylori to antimicrobials. Moreover, these regimens can promote resistance, due to prolonged therapy with multiple antibiotics. A new strategy that can eradicate H. pylori as well as reduce the antibiotics used is required to prevent future antimicrobial resistance in H. pylori. Dual-therapy with vonoprazan and amoxicillin could be a breakthrough for H. pylori eradication in an era of growing antimicrobial resistance. This regimen may provide a satisfactory eradication rate of H. pylori and also minimize antimicrobial resistance due to single antibiotic use and the strong inhibitory effect of vonoprazan on gastric acid secretion.

Antifungal activities were reported for Candida albieans. Some of the Schiffbases showed considerable antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and C. albicans.

Protective effect of Polyalthia longifolia var.pendula leaves on ethanol and ethanol/HCl induced ulcer in rats and its antimicrobial potency

Objective:To explore antiulcer and antimicrobial properties of methanolic extract of Polyalthia longifolia var.pendula.Methods:Gastroprotective potential of Polyalthia longifolia was studied on ethanol and ethanol/HCl induced ulcers at 2 different doses(270 and 540 mg/kg/body weight). antimicrobial efficacy of Polyalthia longifolia(25 mg/mL) was also studied against six gram positive,seven gram negative bacteria and five fungi by agar well diffusion method.Minimum inhibitory concentration was determined by agar well diffusion method in two fold serial dilution, in the range of 97-25 000μg/mL.Results:The reduction of ulcer index in Polyalthia longifolia treated animals was found to be statistically significant with respect to control animals.The Polyalthia longifolia exhibited ulcer protection activity in dose dependent manner and was also better than the standard.In antimicrobial activity,gram positive bacteria were more susceptible to Polyalthia longifolia than gram negative bacteria and fungal strains.Conclusions:Results obtained confirm the antiulcer and antimicrobial potential of the Polyalthia longifolia.

Lanthanide complexes of Eu（III）, Gd（III）, Nd（III）, Sm（III）, and Tb（III） with phenylthioacetic acid were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, mass, infrared radiation （IR）, electronic spectra, molar conductance, thermogravimetric analysis （TGA）, and powder X-ray diffraction （XRD）. The results showed that the lanthanide complexes were homodinuclear in nature. The two lanthanide ions were bridged by eight oxygen atoms from four carboxylate groups. Thermal decomposition profiles were consis- tent with the proposed formulations. Powder XRD studies showed that all the complexes were amorphous in nature. antimicrobial studies indicated that these complexes exhibited more activity than the ligand itself. The DNA cleavage activity of the ligand and its complexes were assayed on CT DNA using gel electrophoresis in the presence of H202. The result showed that the Eu（Ⅲ） and Nd（Ⅲ） complexes completely cleaved the DNA. The anticancer activities of the complexes were also studied towards human cervical cancer cell line （HeLa） and colon cancer cells （HCT116） and it was found that the Eu（Ⅲ） and Nd（Ⅲ） complexes were more active than the corresponding Gd（Ⅲ）, Sm（Ⅲ）, Tb（Ⅲ） complexes and the free ligand on both the cancer cells.

Chalcone-Benzotriazole Conjugates as New Potential antimicrobial Agents： Design, Synthesis, Biological Evaluation and Synergism with Clinical Drugs

A series of chalcone-benzotriazole conjugates as new potential antimicrobial agents were synthesized and char- acterized by ^1H NMR, ^13C NMR, IR and HRMS spectra. antimicrobial assay manifested that some target com- pounds gave moderate to good antibacterial and antifungal activities. The N- 1 derived benzotriazole 5e and N-2 de- rived benzotriazole 6a exhibited valuable inhibitory efficacy against some tested strains. Especially, derivative 6a gave superior antifungal efficacies against C. utilis, S. cerevisiae and A. flavus （MIC^0.01, 0.02, 0.02 gmol/mL, respectively） to Fluconazole. The drug combination of compound 5e or 6a with antibacterial Chloromycin, Nor- floxacin and antifungal Fluconazole respectively showed stronger antimicrobial efficiency with less dosage and broader antimicrobial spectrum than their separated use alone. The preliminary interaction with calf thymus DNA revealed that compound 6a could intercalate into DNA to form 6a-DNA supramolecular complex which might be a factor to exert its powerful bioactivity. Molecular docking study indicated strong binding of compound 6a with DNA gyrase. The structural parameters such as molecular orbital energy and molecular electrostatic potential of compound 6a were also investigated, which provided better understanding for its good antimicrobial activity.

Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance pattern of bacterial strains isolated from patients with urinary tract infection in Messalata Central Hospital, Libya

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of urinary tract infection among patients at Messalata Central Hospital, Libya, to identify the causative bacteria, and to explore their resistance pattern to antimicrobials. Methods: A total number of 1 153 urine samples were collected from patients, who attended daily to Messalata Central Hospital, Libya, in a study extended for one year. antimicrobial susceptibility testing and isolates typing were done using Phoenix BD(BD diagnostic). Resistance was confirmed manually using agar disk diffusion method. Results: Of the 1 153 urine samples tested, 160(13.9%) samples were positive, from which 17 different, solely Gram negative, uropathogens were identified. Escherichia coli were the most prevalent(55.6%) bacteria, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae subspecies pneumoniae(16.3%), Proteus mirabilis(6.3%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa(5.6%), Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella oxytoca(2.5%, each), Citrobacter koseri and Providencia rettgeri(1.9%, each), Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterobacter aerogenes and Proteus vulgaris(1.3%, each), and Aeromonas caviae, Citrobacter freundii, Cronobacter sakazakii, Enterobacter amnigenus biogroup 2, Pseudomonas putida and Serratia marcescens(0.6%, each). The isolated uropathogens showed increased levels of resistance ranged from 10.5% to 64.5%, with an overall resistance of 28.9%. Amikacin was the most effective antimicrobial followed by Imipenem and Meropenem(0%, 0.6% and 2.5% resistance, respectively); while, Cephalothin and Ampicillin were the least(80.6% and 90.0% resistance, respectively) effective. Conclusions: The obtained results emphasized the emergence of highly resistant bacteria to most of tested antimicrobials and raise the alarm for physicians to change their treatment pattern depending on antimicrobial susceptibility results.
