Toxicity and horizontal transfer of bifenthrin and dimefluthrin against the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren(Hymenoptera: Formicidae), and the efficacy of their dust applications in the field

The red imported fire ant,Solenopsis invicta Buren,poses a significant threat to biodiversity,agriculture,and public health in its introduced ranges.While chemicals such as toxic baits and dust are the main methods for S.invicta control,toxic baits are slow,requiring approximately one or two weeks,but dust can eliminate the colony of fire ants rapidly in just three to five days.To explore more active ingredients for fire ant control using dusts,the toxicity of bifenthrin and dimefluthrin,the horizontal transfer of bifenthrin and dimefluthrin dust and their efficacy in the field were tested.The results showed that the LD50(lethal dose) values of bifenthrin and dimefluthrin were 3.40 and 1.57 ng/ant,respectively.The KT50(median knockdown time) and KT95(95%knockdown time) values of a 20μg mL^(–1)bifenthrin dose were 7.179and 16.611 min,respectively.The KT50and KT95of a 5μg mL^(–1)dimefluthrin dose were 1.538 and 2.825 min,respectively.The horizontal transfers of bifenthrin and dimefluthrin among workers were effective.The mortality of recipients (secondary mortality) and secondary recipients (tertiary mortality) were both over 80%at 48 h after 0.25,0.50 and 1.00%bifenthrin dust treatments.The secondary mortality of recipients was over 99%at 48 h after 0.25,0.50 and 1.00% dimefluthrin dust treatments,but the tertiary mortality was below 20%.The field trial results showed that both bifenthrin and dimefluthrin exhibited excellent fire ant control effects,and the comprehensive control effects of 1.00%bifenthrin and dimefluthrin dusts at 14 d post-treatment were 95.87 and 85.70%,respectively.

The fecal shield is a double-edged sword for larvae of a leaf beetle

Larvae of some leaf beetles carry masses of feces covering parts or all of the body,which is called a"fecal shield'In general,the shield is thought to be a defense structure against natural enemies.However,some studies have suggested that defense effectiveness varies depending on the natural enemy.In this study,we used a fecal retention leaf beetle Ophrida xanthospilota(Coleoptera:Chrysomelidae),and 2 local generalist predators(an ant,Camponotus japonicus(Hymenoptera:Formicidae)and a stinkbug,Arma custos(Hemiptera:Pentatomidael)as a system to test the hypothesis that the fecal shield of O.xanthospilota plays different roles in predation behavior of different predators and can provide multiple chemical communication signals in predator-prey interactions.Prey bioassays showed that the fecal shield of O.xanthospilota larvae repelled the ant C.japonicus while attracting the stinkbug A.custos.The results also strongly demonstrated that hexane extracts of the fecal shield significantly repelled C.japonicus,while dichloromethane(DCM)extracts did not inhibit ant predation.Interestingly,DCM extracts attracted A.custos,but hexane extracts did not.Therefore,we suggest that the fecal shield is a double-edged sword for the larvae of O.xanthospilota.Our results also indicated that the risk-benefit tradeoff of an insect should be estimated at a community level involving multiple enemies(predators and parasites)and herbivores,rather than in a single prey-predator pair.

Mutualistic interactions between ant and aphid species have been the subject of considerable historical and contemporary investigations, the primary benefits being clean- ing and protection for the aphids and carbohydrate-rich honeydew for the ants. Questions remained, however, as to the volatile semiochemical factor influencing this relationship. A recent study highlighted the role of bacterial honeydew volatile compounds in ant at- traction. Here, ant＇s ability to distantly discriminate 2 aphid species was investigated based on bacterial honeydew semiochemicals emissions using a two-way olfactometer. Both the mutualistic aphid Aphis fabae L. and the nonmyrmecophilous aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris were found to be attractive for the ant Lasius niger L. The level of attraction was similar in both assays （control vs. one of the aphid species）. However, when given a choice between these 2 aphid species, ants showed a significant preference for Aphis fabae. Honeydew volatiles, mostly from bacterial origins, are known to be a key element in ant attraction. Using the same olfactometry protocol, the relative attractiveness of volatiles emitted by honeydews collected from each aphid species and by bacteria isolated from each honeydew was investigated. Again, ants significantly preferred volatiles released by Aphis fabae honeydew and bacteria. This information suggests that microbial honeydew volatiles enable ants to distantly discriminate aphid species. These results strengthen the interest of studying the occurrence and potential impact of microorganisms in insect symbioses.

Joint partial computation offloading and resource allocation in MEC-enable networks

The sudden surge of various applications poses great challenges to the computation capability of mobile devices.To address this issue,computation offloading to multi-access edge computing(MEC)was proposed as a promising paradigm.This paper studies partial computation offloading scenario by considering time delay and energy consumption,where the task can be splitted into several blocks and computed both in local devices and MEC,respectively.Since the formulated problem is a nonconvex problem,this paper proposes an ant colony-based algorithm to achieve the suboptimal solution.Specifically,the proposed method first establish a multi-user one-MEC scenario,in which user devices are able to offload some part of the task to MEC server.Then,it develops an ant colony-based algorithm to decide the offloading parts and allocation strategy of MEC resources to minimize system cost.Finally,simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of system cost and demonstrate that it outperforms other existing methods.

Integrating logistic regression with ant colony optimization for smart urban growth modelling

Urban growth does not always strictly follow historical trends;the government may reshape urban growth patterns with considerations of ecological conservation or other plans.Both urban dynamic rules and landscape characteristics are the two main factors influencing the spatial patterns of cities,and obtaining an optimized spatial pattern is veiy important for sustainable urban growth.Therefore,in this study,we integrated logistic regression(LR)with the ant colony optimization(ACO)model to analyze the optimal scenario for smart urban growth.The LR model was used to discuss the relationship between urban patterns and environmental variables such as topography,development centers,and traffic conditions.Then,the urban growth probability was generated using the parameters obtained from LR.The ACO model was further integrated to optimize urban land allocation,which can meet the requirement of high growth probability,and a connected and compacted landscape pattern.This can solve the problem of urban land only being allocated by LR from being distributed fragmentarily in the space.With this integrated model,Guangzhou City,a rapidly developing area in China,was selected as a case study.The urban patterns derived from LR,as well as a simulation scenario using logistic regression-based cellular automata(LR-CA),were used in the comparison.Six landscape metrics were chosen to validate the performance of this proposed model at the pattern level.The results show that the LR-ACO model has a better performance in urban land allocation.This study demonstrated that models that couple dynamic rules and planning objectives can provide plausible scenarios for smart urban growth planning.

Do aphids actively search for ant partners？

The aphid-ant mutnalistic relationships are not necessarily obligate for neither partners but evidence is that such interactions provide them strong advantages in terms of global fitness. While it is largely assumed that ants actively search for their mutualistic partners namely using volatile cues; whether winged aphids （i.e., aphids＇ most mobile form） are able to select ant-frequented areas had not been investigated so far. ant-frequented sites would indeed offer several advantages for these aphids including a lower predation pressure through ant presence and enhanced chances of establishing mutuaslistic interactions with neighbor ant colonies. In the field, aphid colonies are often observed in higher densities around ant nests, which is probably linked to a better survival ensured by ants＇ services. Nevertheless, this could also result from a preferential establishment of winged aphids in ant-frequented areas. We tested this last hypothesis through different ethological assays and show that the facultative myrmecophilous black bean aphid, Aphisfabae L., does not orientate its search for a host plant preferentially toward ant-frequented plants. However, our results suggest that ants reduce the number of winged aphids leaving the newly colonized plant. Thus, ants involved in facultative myrmecophilous interactions with aphids appear to contribute to structure aphid populations in the field by ensuring a better establishment and survival of newly established colonies rather than by inducing a deliberate plant selection by aphid partners based on the proximity of ant colonies.

随着算法推荐、人工智能和后人类时代的来临,融媒体实践发展到全新阶段,编辑活动中人和“非人”的区分进一步模糊化,编辑主体间性问题亟待重新阐明和厘定。拉图尔的“行动者网络”理论(ant)所构建的平行本体论能够有效规避此前编辑理论研究尤其主体间性研究中残留的二元论倾向以及实在论、自我归闭性和自明性假设,同时能够很好地兼顾智慧融媒体时代意识主体与“准客体”的身份平衡问题,从而避免人们对编辑实践工作的误识和对各类编辑产品出版发行的误判。ant中人和非人的“广义(超)对称性”原则实质上走向了“超主体间性”,它能够从理论逻辑上确保各类编辑“行动者”结成统一的实践共同体,进而通过“转译”和“间性”协作达到“必经之点”。ant倡导的“追踪行动者”的知识人类学取径与马克思的实践唯物主义高度契合,编辑学研究需要更多地走向“田野”,实现人类学转向,才能更好地走进马克思的思想内核。

Smart Semi-active PID-ACO control strategy for tower vibration reduction in Wind Turbines with MR damper

Wind turbine technology is well known around the globe as an eco-friendly and eff ective renewable power source. However, this technology often faces reliability problems due to structural vibration. This study proposes a smart semi-active vibration control system using Magnetorheological (MR) dampers where feedback controllers are optimized with nature-inspired algorithms. Proportional integral derivative (PID) and Proportional integral (PI) controllers are designed to achieve the optimal desired force and current input for MR the damper. PID control parameters are optimized using an ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm. The eff ectiveness of the ACO algorithm is validated by comparing its performance with Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The placement of the MR damper on the tower is also investigated to ensure structural balance and optimal desired force from the MR damper. The simulation results show that the proposed semi-active PID-ACO control strategy can signifi cantly reduce vibration on the wind turbine tower under diff erent frequencies (i.e., 67%, 73%, 79% and 34.4% at 2 Hz, 3 Hz, 4.6 Hz and 6 Hz, respectively) and amplitudes (i.e. 50%, 58% and 67% for 50 N, 80 N, and 100 N, respectively). In this study, the simulation model is validated with an experimental study in terms of natural frequency, mode shape and uncontrolled response at the 1st mode. The proposed PID-ACO control strategy and optimal MR damper position is also implemented on a lab-scaled wind turbine tower model. The results show that the vibration reduction rate is 66% and 73% in the experimental and simulation study, respectively, at the 1st mode.

Model of Underground ant Nest Structure Using Static and Dynamic Finite Element Analysis

This paper focuses on the structural characteristics of ant nests,which are complex structures.Natural underground ant nests generally have good air circulation,pressure resistance, waterproof properties,thermal insulation and a favorable temperature and relative humidity. Additionally,ant nests are often surrounded by trees and other natural barriers.In this study, the natural underground ant nests of Iridomyrmex anceps were gathered from different collection sites.Manual cutting and frozen computer numerical control milling were performed on the ant nests in a laboratory.The internal structure of each nest was measured and recorded,and then, the 2D and 3D numerical structure models of the Iridomyrmex anceps nest were created.The static and dynamic simulation analysis of an underground ant nest structure was performed by using finite element analysis software (ABAQUS),and the mechanical properties of the ant nest were discussed.The underground ant nest structure effectively resisted the additional stress due to external static and live loads,and the ant nest was not completely destroyed.
