Novel phenolate anion-based covalently cross-linked anion exchange membranes(AEMs) are synthesized via the quaterization reaction between poly(arylene ether sulfone) containing side-chain benzyl groups and phenolate anion-based cross-linker. The cross-linked AEMs showmuch higher performance than the corresponding uncross-linked membrane(Q) because of covalently cross-linked structure and phenolate anion-based antioxidant structure in membrane. Among the cross-linked AEMs, CQ10 with IEC of 1.19 mequiv.g shows a reasonably high hydroxide conductivity of 30 mS /cm at 80 oC, low P of 0.77×10 cms, large φ of 21×10 Scms, and display above two times of oxidative stability than Q. Meanwhile, after aging in 4 mol L Na OH solution at 60 oC for 216 h, CQ10 exhibits low reduction in hydroxide conductivity by only 20% and high mechanical properties with maximum stressof more than 45 MPa, Young’s modulus of higher than 1.13 GPa and elongation at break of higher than 9%, indicating high potential application for anion exchange membrane fuel cells.
