The mass spectral fragmentation of thiosemicarbazones synthesized from acetophenones has been studied by CG/MS. These carbonyl compounds exhibit chromatographic peaks which are not observed in aliphatic analogues or those synthesized from aldehydes. The analysis of the corresponding spectra has allowed structural assignment to the dimerization of gas phase neutral fragments. Theoretical calculations (DFT level) also provide evidence to support the experimental observations.

The implementation of the EU-water framework directive (EU-WFD) demands a financeable and adaptable sewage treatment, creating a need for action especially in rural areas, where the “good ecological status” is often not reached even though the sewage works fulfill the legal minimum requirements. Therefore the construction of new, more efficient wastewater treatment plants is advisable. Due to the precarious financial situation in most rural areas, many municipalities can however not master the necessary funds for an improved waste water infrastructure. A large part of the costs would have to be shouldered by the local population in the form of additional sewage levies, leading to massive socio-economic strain. Hence, different solutions, which are tailored to the socio-economic, demographic and environmental characteristics of rural areas and fulfill the legal requirements, need to be developed. One possible approach is presented in the form of the Dirlammen case study (municipality Lautertal, Hesse, Germany). It consists of 1) biological and physicochemical analyses of the waste waters, 2) a modified eco-balance for the construction of a new sewage works and 3) socio-economic and demographic analyses of the population. It serves as a tool for the assessment of the influencing ecological, socio-economic and demographic factors on the sewage problems in rural areas. These findings can easily be transferred to other rural areas with a similar configuration and thus deliver the basis for a generally applicable approach to these problems. The results of the comprehensive analysis have shown for the municipality Dirlammen/Lautertal that the continued operation of the existing pond sewage plant is, with regards to the ecological, socio-economic and demographic points of view, preferable to the construction of a new waste water treatment plant. Dirac Coupled Channel analyses of Proton Inelastic Scatterings from s-d Shell Nuclei

Proton inelastic scatterings from several s-d shell nuclei are analyzed using optical potential model and collective model in Dirac coupled channel formalism. The optical potential parameters obtained phenomenologically for the scatterings from the s-d shell nuclei are compared with each other for systematic Dirac analysis. Dirac equations are reduced to the second-order differential equations in order to obtain the Schroedinger equivalent effective central and spin-orbit optical potentials, and the surface-peaked phenomena are observed at the real effective central potentials for the scatterings from 22Ne, 20Ne and 24Mg. By analyzing the obtained effective spin-orbit potentials, it is confirmed that the spin-orbit interaction is a surface-peaked interaction. The first-order rotational collective models are used to describe the low-lying excited states of the ground state rotational bands in the s-d shell deformed nuclei, and the obtained deformation parameters are analyzed by comparing with each other, and compared with those obtained by using the nonrelativistic calculations. The obtained deformation parameters of Dirac phenomenological calculations for the s-d shell nuclei are found to agree pretty well with those of the nonrelativistic calculations using the same Woods-Saxon potential shape, even though the theoretical bases are quite different.

Vertical response of microbial community and degrading genes to petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in saline alkaline soil

A column microcosm was conducted by amending crude oil into Dagang Oilfield soil to simulate the bioremediation process. The dynamic change of microbial communities and metabolic genes in vertical depth soil from 0 to 80 cm were characterized to evaluate the petroleum degradation potential of indigenous microorganism. The influence of environmental variables on the microbial responds to petroleum contamination were analyzed. Degradation extent of 42.45% of n-alkanes(C8–C40) and 34.61% of 16ΣPAH were reached after 22 weeks. Relative abundance of alkB, nah, and phe gene showed about 10-fold increment in different depth of soil layers. Result of HTS profiles demonstrated that Pseudomonas, Marinobacter and Lactococcus were the major petroleum-degrading bacteria in0–30 and 30–60 cm depth of soils. Fusarium and Aspergillus were the dominant oil-degrading fungi in the 0–60 cm depth of soils. In 60–80 cm deep soil, anaerobic bacteria such as Bacteroidetes, Lactococcus, and Alcanivorax played important roles in petroleum degradation.Redundancy analysis(RDA) and correlation analysis demonstrated that petroleum hydrocarbons(PHs) as well as soil salinity, clay content, and anaerobic conditions were the dominant effect factors on microbial community compositions in 0–30, 30–60, and 60–80 cm depth of soils, respectively.

Quality analyses of Fine Structures Transfer in the Photorealistic Images

This work presents method of the quality analyses of the photorealistic images. Developed method utilizes proposed criteria of image definition quality for fine details. Presented method has the following significant property: the quality estimation is provided without test images or patterns. Algorithm for search and recognition of fine structures in the photorealistic images using the predefined criterion is considered.

Comparative studies on fouling of homogeneous anion exchange membranes by different structured organics in electrodialysis

Five negatively charged organic compounds with different structures, sodium methane sulfonate(MS), sodium benzene sulfonate(BS), sodium 6-hydroxynaphthalene-2-sulfonate(NSS), sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS), were used to examine the fouling of an anion exchange membrane(AEM) in electrodialysis(ED),to explore the effect of molecular characteristics on the fouling behavior on the AEM and changes in the surface and electrochemical properties of the AEM. Results indicated that the fouling degree of the AEM by the different organics followed the order:SDBS > SDS > NSS > BS > MS. SDBS and SDS formed a dense fouling layer on the surface of the AEM, which was the main factor in the much more severe membrane fouling, and completely restricted the transmembrane ion migration. The other three organics caused fouling of the AEM by adsorption on the surface and/or accumulation in the interlayer of the AEM, and exhibited almost no influence on the transmembrane ion migration. It was also concluded that the organics with benzene rings caused more severe fouling of the AEM due to the stronger affinity interaction and steric effect between the organics and the AEM compared with organics with aliphatic chains.

Myripnois is a monotypic shrub genus in the daisy family constricted to northern China.Although wild populations of Myripnois dioica are relatively rare,this plant may potentially be cultured as a fine ornamental.In the present study,we sequenced the complete plastome of M.dioica,generating the first plastome sequences of the subfamily Pertyoideae.The plastome of M.dioica has a typical quadripartite circular structure.A large^20-kb and a small^3-kb inversion were detected in the large single copy(LSC)region and shared by other Asteraceae species.Plastome phylogenomic analyses based on 78 Asteraceae species and three outgroups revealed four groups,corresponding to four Asteraceae subfamilies:Asteroideae,Cichorioideae,Pertyoideae and Carduoideae.Among these four subfamilies,Pertyoideae is sister to Asteroideae+Cichorioideae;Carduoideae is the most basal clade.In addition,we characterized 13 simple sequence repeats(SSRs)that may be useful in future studies on population genetics.

The interaction between organisms and their environment is central in functional morphology.Differences in habitat usage may imply divergent morphology of locomotor systems;thus,detecting which morphological traits are conservative across lineages and which ones vary under environmental pressure is important in evolutionary studies.We studied internal and external morphology in 28 species of Neotropical anurans.Our aim was to determine if internal morphology(muscle and tendons)shows lower phylogenetic signal than external morphology.In addition,we wanted to know if morphology varies in relation to the habitat use and if there are different functional groups.We found differences in the degree of phylogenetic signal on the groups of traits.Interestingly,postaxial regions of the forelimb are evolutionarily more labile than the preaxial regions.Phylomorphospace plots show that arboreal(jumpers and graspers)and swimmer frogs cluster based on length of fingers and the lack of sesamoid,also reflected by the use of habitat.These functional clusters are also related to phylogeny.Sesamoid and flexor plate dimensions together with digit tendons showed to be important to discriminate functional groups as well as use of habitat classification.Our results allow us to identify a"grasping syndrome"in the hand of these frogs,where palmar sesamoid and flexor plate are absent and a third metacarpal with a bony knob are typical.Thus,a lighter skeleton,long fingers and a prensile hand may be key for arboreality.

Gender differences in nonlinear motor performance following concussion

Purpose:To quantify differences in nonlinear aspects of performance on a seated visual-motor tracking task between clinically asymptomatic males and females with and without a self-reported mild traumatic brain injury history.Methods:Seventy-three individuals with a self-reported concussion history(age:21.40±2.25 years,mean±SD)and 75 without completed the visual-motor tracking task(age:21.50±2.00 years).Participants pressed an index finger against a force sensor,tracing a line across a computer screen(visual-motor tracking).The produced signal's root-mean-square error(RMSE),sample entropy(SampEn,a measure of regularity),and average power(AvP)between 0 and 12 Hz were calculated.Results:Males with a history of 0 or 1 concussion had greater RMSE(worse performance)than females with 0(p<0.0001)and 1 concussion(p=0.052).Additionally,females with 2+concussions exhibited lower SampEn than females with no history(p=0.001)or a history of 1 concussion(p=0.026).Finally,females with 2+concussions had lower 8-12 Hz AvP than males with 2+concussions(p=0.031).Few differences were observed in the male participants.Conclusion:Females with a self-reported history of multiple concussions exhibited lower SampEn in the visual-motor tracking-task force output structure as compared to those with no reported history of concussion and their male counterparts.Lower SampEn and lower power between 8 and12 Hz indicated persistent impairment in visual processing and feed-forward or predictive motor control systems.
