AIM:To investigate the potential effect and mechanism of leucine-richα-2-glycoprotein-1(LRG1)on corneal angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis.METHODS:Corneal neovascularization and lymphatics were induced by establishing alkali burn mouse model.Immunofluorescence staining was performed to detect the location of LRG1 in cornea tissues and to verify the source of LRG1-positive cells.Corneal whole-mount staining for CD31(a panendothelial cell marker)and lymphatic endothelial hyluronan receptor-1(LYVE-1;lymphatic marker)was performed to detect the growth of blood and lymphatic vessels after local application of exogenous LRG1 protein or LRG1 si RNA.In addition,expressions of the proangiogenic vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)related proteins were detected using Western blot analysis.RESULTS:LRG1 was dramatically increased in alkali burned corneal stroma in both the limbal and central areas.LRG1-positive cells in the corneal stroma were mainly derived from Vimentin-positive cells.Local application ofexogenous LRG1 protein not only aggravated angiogenesis but also lymphangiogenesis significantly(Palkali burn mice.

Neutral aqueous alkali sulfate has shown great interests for developing environmentally friendly high voltage and high energy supercapacitors. This work focuses on systematically investigating the properties of symmetric carbon/carbon supercapacitors in neutral aqueous alkali sulfates. At room temperature, the largest power and energy density were obtained with K2SO4 electrolyte due to the smallest cation dimensions and highest electrical conductivity. At low temperature, aqueous Li2SO4 electrolyte presents the best performance due to the largest solubility, allowing a long-term stability at temperatures ranging between 20℃ and –10℃ at a maximum voltage of 1.8 V. The excellent stability has been confirmed that capacitance retention achieves as high as 92% after 10,000 cycles. The capacitance variations with temperatures could essentially result from kinetic diffusion barrier, ion dimension changes and fewer pseudo-capacitance contributions under different temperatures. This work highlights the selected virtues of different alkali sulfate electrolytes for enhanced supercapacitors.

The potentials of phenolic productions from lignin and black liquor(BL)via hydrothermal technology with the aids of alkalis and hydrogen donors were investigated,by conducting batch experiments in micro-tube reactors with 300℃ sub-critical water as the solvent.The results showed that all the employed alkalis improved lignin degradation and thus phenolics production,and the strong alkalis additionally manifested deoxygenation to produce more phenolics free of methoxyl group(s).Relatively,hydrogen donors more visibly facilitated phenolics formation.Combination of strong alkali and hydrogen donors exhibited synergistically positive effects on producing phenolics(their total yield reaching 22 wt%)with high selectivities to phenolics,among which the yields of catechol and cresols respectively peaked 16 and 3.5 wt%.BL could be hydrothermally converted into phenolics at high yields(approaching 10 wt%with the yields of catechol and cresols of about 4 and 2 wt%,respectively)with the aids of its inherent alkali and hydrogen donors,justifying its cascade utilization.

Transcriptome analysis reveals the effects of alkali stress on root system architecture and endogenous hormones in apple rootstocks

Soil alkalinity is a major factor that restricts the growth of apple roots.To analyze the response of apple roots to alkali stress, the root structure and endogenous hormones of two apple rootstocks, Malus prunifolia (alkali-tolerant) and Malus hupehensis (alkali-sensitive), were compared. To understand alkali tolerance of M. prunifolia at the molecular level, transcriptome analysis was performed. When plants were cultured in alkaline conditions for 15 d, the root growth of M. hupehensis with weak alkali tolerance decreased significantly. Analysis of endogenous hormone levels showed that the concentrations of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and zeatin riboside (ZR) in M. hupehensis under alkali stress were lower than those in the control. However, the trend for IAA and ZR in M. prunifolia was the opposite. The concentration of abscisic acid (ABA) in the roots of the two apple rootstocks under alkali stress increased, but the concentration of ABA in the roots of M. prunifolia was higher than that in M. hupehensis. The expression of IAA-related genes ARF5, GH3.6, SAUR36, and SAUR32 and the Cytokinin (CTK)-related gene IPT5 in M. prunifolia was higher than those in the control, but the expression of these genes in M. hupehensis was lower than those in the control. The expression of ABA-related genes CIPK1 and AHK1 increased in the two apple rootstocks under alkali stress, but the expression of CIPK1 and AHK1 in M. prunifolia was higher than in M. hupehensis. These results demonstrated that under alkali stress, the increase of IAA, ZR, and ABA in roots and the increase of the expression of related genes promoted the growth of roots and improved the alkali tolerance of apple rootstocks.

Red mud produced in the Bayer process is a hazardous solid waste because of its high alkalinity; however, it is rich in valuable components such as titanium, iron, and aluminum. In this study, a novel calcification-carbonation method was developed to recover alkali and alumina from Bayer red mud under mild reaction conditions. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate the potential effects of im- portant parameters such as temperature, amount of CaO added, and CO2 partial pressure on the recovery of alkali and alumina. The results showed that 95.2% alkali and 75.0% alumina were recovered from red mud with decreases in the mass ratios of Na2O to Fe2O3 and of Al2O3 to Fe2O3 from 0.42 and 0.89 to 0.02 and 0.22, respectively. The processed red mud with less than 0.5wt% Na2O can potentially be used as a construction material.

Third-order optical nonlinearities and dynamic responses of two imino squaramides under neutral and base conditions were studied using the femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing technique at 800nm.Ultrafast optical responses have been observed and the magnitude of the second-order hyperpolarizabilities of the squaramides has been measured to be as large as 10 31 esu. The absorption spectra,color of solution,and third-order optical nonlinearities of two imino squaramides change with the addition of sodium hydroxide.The γ value under the base condition for each dye is approximately 1.25 times larger than that under neutral conditions.

A review of coreflood experiments for chemically enhanced oil recovery(EOR)is presented in this paper,particularly surfactant-polymer(SP)and alkali-surfactant-polymer(ASP)processes.The objective of this review is to gain a general outlook and insight from coreflood experiments injecting SP or ASP slug as tertiary recovery.The discussion is separated into sections based on relevant core and fluid properties as well as surfactant selection and SP/ASP slug design and their impact on incremental recovery.Most studies in this review have been published within the last twenty years but few older coreflood works have been included for benchmarking.Parameters in each reviewed study have been summarized in tables to help readers gain detailed observation.Lessons learned from these past experiments should help other chemical EOR practitioners or students of the field in benchmarking or improving the outcomes of their future SP/ASP experiments.

CONSPECTUS:Hydrogen storage for onboard applications has been recognized as a grand challenge for the large-scale implementation of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.Tremendous research efforts have thus been devoted to the design and development of hydrides of lightweight elements(HLEs).A prominent feature of these materials is the indispensable ingredient of alkali/alkaline earth cations.alkali alkaline earth metals(AMs)are highly reactive and have a rich coordination chemistry.As a matter of fact,an AM cation can form a complete range of compounds with hydrogenous anions,such as H−,[NH2]−,[BH4]−,[AlH4]−,[NH2BH3]−,[TMHX]−,[R-CH2−NH]−,[R-CH2−O]−,etc.,and,thus,tune the Al−H,N−H,B−H,and C−H bond strengths for hydrogen storage.In this Account,our research efforts in the development of AM amide-hydride composites,AM amidoboranes,and metalorganic hydrides for hydrogen storage are reviewed.A partial substitution of the H in NH3 by AM gives rise to solid AM amides or imides.Those compounds can react with AM hydride(AMH)to produce H2.This is driven by the redox reaction between a protic H(N)and hydridic H(AM).A variety of amide-hydride composites holding promise for hydrogen storage were thus developed,including LiNH2-hydride,Mg(NH2)2-hydride,and complex amide-hydride composites.For amidoboranes,the substitution of H(N)in ammonia borane(AB)by AM transforms the molecular crystal AB into amidoboranes with an ionic crystal structure,leading to significant changes in terms of charge distribution,bond length,intermolecular forces,and so on,which in turn results in enhanced dehydrogenation properties.For metalorganic hydrides,through reacting AM compounds(usually AM hydride)with aliphatic,carbocyclic,or heterocyclic organic hydrides having“reactive protic H”,corresponding metalorganic hydrides are formed.Because of the electron-donating nature of AM,the strengths of the C−H bond in metal-organic hydrides can be modulated.For each material system,we will introduce the synthesis of materials,show their performances,correlate the hydr
