The tropical Pacific is currently experiencing an El Nifio event. Various coupled models with different degrees of complexity have been used to make real-time E1 Nifio predictions, but large uncertainties exist in the inten- sity forecast and are strongly model dependent. An intermediate coupled model （ICM） is used at the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences （IOCAS）, named the IOCAS ICM, to predict the sea surface temper- ature （SST） evolution in the tropical Pacific during the 2015-2016 E! Nifio event. One unique feature of the IOCAS ICM is the way in which the temperature of subsurface water entrained in the mixed layer （Te） is parameterized. Observed SST anomalies are only field that is utilized to initialize the coupled prediction using the IOCAS ICM. Examples are given of the model＇s ability to predict the SST conditions in a real-time manner. As is commonly evident in E1 Nifio- Southern Oscillation predictions using coupled models, large discrepancies occur between the observed and pre- dicted SST anomalies in spring 2015. Starting from early summer 2015, the model can realistically predict warming conditions. Thereafter, good predictions can be made through the summer and fall seasons of 2015. A transition to normal and cold conditions is predictecl to occur in rote spring 2016. Comparisons with other model predictions are made and factors influencing the prediction performance of the IOCAS ICM are also discussed.

Recent modeling studies on the shedding of Loop Current rings suggest that the intensification of the dominant zonal wind field delays the detachment of rings and affects the Loop Current migrations. The atmospheric modulation of the Loop Current migrations is analyzed here using reanalysis winds and altimetry-derived observa- tions. A newly developed methodology is applied to locate the Loop Current front, and a wavelet-based semblance analysis is used to explore correlations with atmospheric forcing. The results show that weakening （intensification） of the zonal wind stress in the eastern Gulf of Mexico is related with the Loop Current excursions to the north （south）. Semblance analyses confirm negative correlations between the zonal wind stress and the Loop Current migrations during the past 20 years. The intrusions of the Loop Current might involve an increase of the Yucatan Transport, which would balance the westward Rossby wave speed of a growing loop and delay the ring shedding. The results of this study have consequences for the interpretation of the chaotic processes of ring detachment and Loop Current intrusions, which might be modulated by wind stress.

The Nordic seas have a significant impact on the climate *** 23-day air-sea heat fluxes were analyzed from an in situ air-sea coupled buoy deployed in the Lofoten Basin from 5 August 2012 to 27 August *** buoy captured two stages of strong south and north *** observations indicate that warm and wet air transported by the south wind can lead to decreased sensible and latent heat fluxes and net longwave *** total oceanic heat loss was 50-60Wm−***,this stage was called the heat insulation *** contrast,the heat dissipation process occurred with the north wind condition dur-ing advection of the cold and dry *** this process,sensible and latent heat fluxes and net longwave radiation notably *** total oceanic heat loss during the heat dissipation process reached 240Wm−2,which was four-fold greater than that in the heat insulation *** that the heat insulation process is dominant in summertime,the ocean lost minimal heat but absorbed strong solar ***,a large quantity of energy was stored in the *** was transported to the Arctic Ocean and accelerated Arctic *** heat dissipation process is dominant in autumn and winter when the ocean releases consid-erably more *** two processes revealed in this paper can be applied to warm-water areas in high latitudes.

A regional air-sea coupled model, comprising the Regional Integrated Environment Model System （RIEMS） and the Princeton Ocean Model （POM） was developed to simulate summer climate features over East Asia in 2000. The sensitivity of the model＇s behavior to the coupling time interval （CTI）, the causes of the sea surface temperature （SST） biases, and the role of air-sea interaction in the simulation of precipitation over China are investigated. Results show that the coupled model can basically produce the spatial pattern of SST, precipitation, and surface air temperature （SAT） with five different CTIs respectively. Also, using a CTI of 3, 6 or 12 hours tended to produce more successful simulations than if using 1 and 24 hours. Further analysis indicates that both a higher and lower coupling frequency result in larger model biases in air-sea heat flux exchanges, which might be responsible for the sensitivity of the coupled model＇s behavior to the CTI. Sensitivity experiments indicate that SST biases between the coupled and uncoupled POM occurring over the China coastal waters were due to the mismatch of the surface heat fluxes produced by the RIEMS with those required by the POM. In the coupled run, the air-sea feedbacks reduced the biases in surface heat fluxes, compared with the uncoupled RIEMS, consequently resulted in changes in thermal contrast over land and sea and led to a precipitation increase over South China and a decrease over North China. These results agree well observations in the summer of 2000.

P CO 2 of air and seawater samples from the East China sea (ECS) were measured in situ in autumn, 1994. Ocean currents, terrestrial fluviation, biological activities, etc.,P CO 2 characters in air and seawater were investigated. CO 2 flux and its character in the East China sea are discussed on the basis of theP CO 2 profiles of air and seawater. It was clear that the nearshore was the source of CO 2; and that the outer sea area was the sink of CO 2; and that the shelf area of the ECS is a net sink for atmospheric CO 2 in autumn.

With a simple tropical coupled ocean-atmosphere model, this paper presents an analysis aiming to understand the relative role of the meridional and zonal wind stresses in the tropical unstable air-sea interaction. The roles of the zonal wind stress, the meridional wind stress and the both are considered respectively into the coupled system. It is demonstrated that the meridional component of the wind stress does not lead to any instability under the local thermal balance assumption, but it does lead to a weak instability under the sea surface temperature advection assumption. Unstable air-sea interaction is dominated by the zonal component of the wind stress, suggesting that ignoring the meridional wind stress is approximately feasible in studying the tropical unstable air-sea interaction.

Diagnostic studies have been done of the seasonal and interdecadal variations of the coupling patterns for the air-sea interactions in the northern Pacific region, by using 500-hPa geopotential height field of the Northern Hemisphere and monthly mean SST field of northern Pacific Ocean (1951 ~ 1995) and with the aid of the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) technique. The results show that: (1) The distribution patterns of SVD, which link with the El Ni駉 (or La Ni馻) events, are important in the interaction between the atmosphere and ocean while the atmosphere, coupling with it, varies like the PNA teleconnection does. The coupling of air-sea interactions is the highest in the winter (January), specifically linking the El Ni駉 event with the PNA pattern in the geopotential height field. Of the four seasons, summer has the poorest coupling when the 500-hPa geopotential height field corresponding to the La Ni馻 event displays patterns similar to the East Asian-Pacific one (PJ). The spring and autumn are both transitional and the coupling is less tight in the autumn than in the spring. (2) Significant changes have taken place around 1976 in the pattern of air-sea coupling, with the year抯 winter having intensified PNA pattern of 500-hPa winter geopotential height field, deepened Aleutian low that moves southeast and the summer following it having outstanding PJ pattern of 500-hPa geopotential height field, which is not so before 1976.

The Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) method is used to conduct studies of periodicity of the SST and meridional winds in tropical Pacific Ocean. The results show that the air-sea system for the Pacific varies on quasi-4-year, quasi-2-year and interannual scales, with the quasi-4-year scale having the highest variability. Depending on the scale, the wind field has a varying degree of association with the SST anomalies. Difference is also found in the evolution of phase. In addition, the work discusses the difference in SSTA resulted from wind fields for quasi-4-year and quasi-2-year components.
