Development of a Social activities Scale for Community-Dwelling Older Men Requiring Support in Japan

Aim: We developed a scale to measure the social activities of community-dwelling older men requiring support. Methods: The participants were a group of 134 men, ≥65 years old, who required support and were living in Hokkaido, Japan. An anonymous questionnaire was administered through individual interviews. Valid responses were obtained from 121/134 interviewees. The construct validity of the resulting scale was assessed by exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Criterion-related validity was tested with Spearman’s rank correlation test based on the Social activities Index for Elderly People (SAI-E). Reliability was assessed by Cronbach’s alpha. Results: A Social activities Scale for Community-dwelling Older Men Requiring Support (SASOMS) scale was created, comprised of the following three subscales: daily interactions with familiar people;intimate relationships with family members;and interactions with others through activity programs (e.g., exercise, games, recreation, etc.). The created SASOMS scale correlated with the SAI-E (r = 0.557), and its criterion-related validity was confirmed. The alpha coefficient of the new scale was 0.791, and its internal consistency was confirmed. Conclusions: The reliability and validity of the developed SASOMS scale was confirmed, demonstrating that it can be used to assess social activities specifically in older men requiring support. Our results suggest that the scale can be used effectively by care providers who support older men requiring care. The usability of the SASOMS should continue to be improved, and it is necessary to verify its validity in longitudinal studies.

An Integrated Socio-Economic and Ecological Framework for Evaluating the Societal Costs and Benefits of Fishing activities in the Pearl River Delta

This paper puts forward a model of Pearl River Delta (PRD) fishery in the South China Sea (SCS) that integrates the ecological, social and economic costs and benefits of fisheries activities in a multidisciplinary framework. In particular, an integrated ECOST model is composed of links between an ecological model constructed by Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) software and a region Social Accounting Matrix (SAM). Then the costs and benefits of five fishing methods are compared from economic, ecological and social three dimensions base on the ECOST model. The potential effects of fishing effort reduction on fishing communication are explored by a series of dynamic simulations for a 10-year period. Key results from prediction (2005-2015) and policy simulations illustrate that fisheries of PRE are geared toward short-term economic profits at the expense of ecological gains and the whole group of societal benefits associated with fishing. However, the status quo can be improved to better levels by reducing fishing efforts.

On the Application of Communicative Teaching activities in Enhancing Students' Interests in English Reading

Recent years,many high schools enlarged their dimensions of enrollment along with the colleges’enlarged enrollment.As a result,the vocational schools’enrollees are mostly the graduated junior high school students who are not qualified to enroll in the senior high schools.The researcher found many students didn’t have interests in English reading.They often chat,read novels,or even sleep.That badly interrupted the accomplishment of regular teaching process.Most of the colleagues of the researcher contributed that to the lowered quality of students.But there might be many further reasons decreased the students’reading interests,such as,the teachers’teaching methods,the applicability of the textbooks,the teaching environment,and etc.Many researches had been conducted on the issue of the English reading.But there are a few practical researches on how to enhance students’interests in English reading.The researcher hypothesized that the communicative teaching activities(shortened as CTA hereinafter)can enhance students’reading interests.A three-week project was conducted among 35students.CTA was arranged in each of the three stages of English reading teaching,namely the pre-reading stage,the while-reading stage and the post reading stage.The researcher analyzed the weekly diary that described the performance changes of students,and also the exercise marks they got in the classes in three weeks.The results turned out students’interests in English reading had been highly improved after the application of CTA.The significance of this project is that the application of communicative teaching activities can enhance students’reading interests.And those teachers who are meeting the same problem in their teachings can benefit from this project.

Evaluation of Pre-listening activities by Effective Listeners and Less-effective Listeners

This study,which is about pre-listening activities in language comprehension,seeks to obtain a better understanding of Chinese EFL students’listening comprehension in relation to radio news broadcasts.It investigates listeners’evaluation of the effects of pre-listening activities involving three listening texts with three kinds of different pre-listening activities.The findings yielded that the pre-listening activities had some impact on influencing the listeners’listening comprehension and it differed for effective and less-effective listeners.

Create Effective activities for Students to Learn English Literature

Rather than only learning English grammar and some other language knowledge about English,learning English litera ture is another effective way for students to learn English since they can not only learn the native English by reading some English literature but also get familiar with different cultures and background knowledge of English countries.As an English teacher,the main job in the literature class is to design effective activities for students in order to let them comprehend texts that they read and improve their critical thinking.This paper is tend to discuss some activities,including pre-reading,reading and post-reading ac tivities,which was used in my literature class and how they help the students learn English and improve their critical thinking.

Exploring the Development of English Club activities in Junior High School English Language Learning

English language activities are enjoyable and respect the students’subjectivity,which stimulates their enthusiasm for using English communication.Therefore,it is widely welcomed by junior high school students.The development of the English club and their activities,such as membership,management systems,event planning,advisory lecturers,and cooperation with school management,among others,all directly affect the club activities.Therefore,it is essential to promote their club activities in junior high school English language learning.This paper analyzes the role of the English club and explores their process of conducting specific activities.It is hoped that this paper will be used as a reference for future studies.

Effects of Different Types of Verbal activities on Heart Rate Variability

In the present study, the effects of different types of verbal activities on heart rate variability (HRV) were investigated. ECG signals were recorded in ten volunteers during resting (R), reading silently (RS), reading aloud (RA) and talking freely (TF). Time domain, frequency domain and Poincaré plot measures of HRV were calculated for analyzing. Time domain parameter of pNN50, frequency domain parameter of LF (n.u.) and Poincaré plot parameter of SD1/SD2 were found statistically difference in RA and TF compared to R and RS. The results in this study show that HRV decreased while subjects were reading aloud and talking freely. The results also indicated that verbal activities of reading aloud and talking freely improve the sympathetic nervous activity.
