This study presents a viable green synthesis approach to produce Ag and Cu nanoparticles (MNPs) by using carbohydrates such as glucose, fructose, sucrose, and starch as reducing agents and describes theirantimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli DH5a. Optical and diffused light scattering analyses showed the Ag NPs ranged from 20 to 75 nm and the Cu NPs varied from 20 to 160 nm, which supports the differences in their absorption bands (400-434 nm for Ag and 458-641 nm for Cu). The reducing sugars interacted differently with Ag^+ and Cu^2+ based on their size and hydrolysis by NaOH resulting in effective stabilization of Ag^0 and Cu^0 and variation in the bactericidal activities of the MNPs. The antibacterial effects of the MNPs were evaluated by measuring the inhibition zones using E. coli DH5a as a test organism. No growth was observed by restreaking different parts of the clearly inhibited zones into new culture plates indicating the bactericidal efficacy of the Ag and Cu MNPs. The Ag NPs were found to be more effective in terms of the size of their in hibition zones (1.21-1.82 cm) compared with those of the Cu NPs (0.0-1.2 cm). This study provides a promising basis for the formulation of a new gen eration of bactericidal agents.

In the present study,four new sesquiterpenoids,chimonols A–D(compounds 1–4),together with four known compounds(5–8) were isolated from the Et OAc extract of Chimonanthus praecox Link.The structures of these new compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic techniques(UV,IR,MS,and 1 D and 2 D NMR),and their absolute configurations were established by comparing experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism(ECD) spectra.Compounds 1–8 were evaluated for antimicrobial activities and the minimum inhibitory concentrations(MICs) were determined by the broth microdilution method in 96-well culture plates.Compounds 1,2,and 7 exhibited weak antibacterial effects for S.aureus(ATCC 6538),E.coli(ATCC 11775),and P.aeruginosa(ATCC 10145) with MIC values being 158–249 μg·mL^(-1).Compounds 3–7 showed activities against C.glabrata(ATCC 2001) and S.aureus(ATCC 43300) with MIC values being 128–197 μg·mL^(-1).Compounds 1–4 showed activity against S.aureus(ATCC 25923) with MIC values being 162–254 μg·mL^(-1).The present study provided a basis for future evaluation of these compounds as antibacterial agents.

A Historical Sedimentary Record of Mercury in a Shallow Eutrophic Lake: Impacts of Human activities and Climate Change

Mercury and its derivatives are hazardous environmental pollutants and could affect the aquatic ecosystems and human health by biomagnification. Lake sediments can provide important historical information regarding changes in pollution levels and thus trace anthropogenic or natural influences. This research investigates the 100-year history of mercury (Hg) deposition in sediments from Chao Lake, a shallow eutrophic lake in China. The results indicate that the Hg deposition history can be separated into three stages (pre-1960s, 1960s–1980s, and post-1980s) over the last 100 years. Before the 1960s, Hg concentrations in the sediment cores varied little and had no spatial difference. Since the 1960s, the concentration of Hg began to increase gradually, and showed a higher concentration of contamination in the western half of the lake region than in the eastern half of the lake region due to all kinds of centralized human-input sources. The influences of anthropogenic factors and hydrological change are revealed by analyzing correlations between Hg and heavy metals (Fe, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn), stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes (d13C and d15N), nutrients, particle sizes, and meteorological factors. The results show that Hg pollution intensified after the 1960s, mainly due to hydrological change, rapid regional development and urbanization, and the proliferation of anthropogenic Hg sources. Furthermore, the temperature, wind speed, and evaporation are found to interactively influence the environmental behaviors and environmental fate of Hg.

Objective:To investigate some phytochemical constituents and biological activities of twelve samples of Tetrapleura tetraptera(Schumach&Thonn.)taub.and nine samples of Aframomum citratum(C.Pereira)K.Schum fruits collected in the bimodal forest zone(ZONEⅤ),the unimodal forest zone(ZONEⅣ)and the highlands zone(ZONEⅢ)in Cameroon.Methods:Fresh fruits extracts were obtained by aqueous infusion(100℃during 15 min)and evaluated by spectrophotometric methods for total polyphenol(TPP),total flavonoids(TFLV)contents and antioxidant(DPPH,total antioxidant capacity by the phosphomolybdenum method,iron reducing power or ferric reducing antioxidant power and inhibition of beta carotene discoloration assays)and anti-inflammatory(inhibitions of protein denaturation and 5-LOX represented by INH.PROT and INH.5-LOX respectively)properties.Principal component analysis was performed.Results:For both species,fruits from ZONEⅤhave the highest TPP,TFLV levels and biological activities.TPP and TFLV content of Aframomum citratum and Tetrapleura tetraptera fruits are positively and significantly(Pactivities of all extracts(0.25,2.5,25,250 mg/mL)were dosedependent and the extracts have shown strong antioxidant and antiinflammatory activities,but less than references(ascorbic acid,diclofenac,quercetin,and butylated hydroxytoluene).There was a positive correlation between TPP,TFLV and total antioxidant capacity,ferric reducing antioxidant power,and inhibition of beta carotene discoloration assays,and inverse correlations were observed with the IC50(g/mL)of DPPH,INH.5-LOX and INH.PROT assays for both species.Conclusions:The fruits exhibit variabilities and those from ZONEⅤfor both species are economically and healthcare challenging for herbalists,pharmaceutical firms,scientists and consumers.Indeed,most important extraction yield of bioactive compounds correlated with significant biological activities and the use of less material compared with an implementation in other Agro-ecologic Zones with the same results a

Diosgenin, a well-known steroid sapogenin derived from plants, has been used as a starting material for production of steroidal hormones. The present review will summarize published literature concerning pharmacological potential of diosgenin, and the underlying mechanisms of actions. Diosgenin has shown a vast range of pharmacological activities in preclinical studies. It exhibits anticancer, cardiovascular protective, anti-diabetes, neuroprotective, immunomodulatory, estrogenic, and skin protective effects, mainly by inducing apoptosis, suppressing malignant transformation, decreasing oxidative stress, preventing inflammatory events, promoting cellular differentiation/proliferation, and regulating T-cell immune response, etc. It interferes with cell death pathways and their regulators to induce apoptosis. Diosgenin antagonizes tumor metastasis by modulating epithelial-mesenchymal transition and actin cytoskeleton to change cellular motility, suppressing degradation of matrix barrier, and inhibiting angiogenesis. Additionally, diosgenin improves antioxidant status and inhibits lipid peroxidation. Its anti-inflammatory activity is through inhibiting production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, enzymes and adhesion molecules. Furthermore, diosgenin drives cellular growth/differentiation through the estrogen receptor(ER) cascade and transcriptional factor PPARγ. In summary, these mechanistic studies provide a basis for further development of this compound for pharmacotherapy of various diseases.

Caesalpinia sappan L.(CS) is a plant of Leguminosae family,commonly known as Brazil or Sappan wood.CS is distributed in Southeast Asia and its dried heartwood has been used as traditional ingredient of food or beverages and has a wide variety of medicinal properties.Higher extraction yield of CS wood was achieved with 95% ethanol for 2 h.Chemical constituent's investigation of sappan wood resulled in the isolation of various structural types of phenolic components including one xanihone,one coumarin,three chalcones,two flavones three homoisoflavonoids and brazilin.Brazilin[(6a S-cis)-7,11b-dihydrobcnz[b]indeno[1.2-d]pyran-3.6a.9.10(6H)- tetroll.a major and active compound found in CS heartwood.Most of the folkloric uses of brazilin were validated by the scientific studies such as antioxidant,antibacterial,anti-inflammatory,anti-photoaging.hypoglycemic,vasorelaxant,hepatoproteetive and anti-acne activity.CS heartwood extract is safe and did not produce any acute or subacute toxicity in both male and female rats.Brazilin is the safe natural compound having potential to develop as a medicinal compound with application in food,beverage,cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries to screen its clinical use in modern medicine.The information gained could provide the important and potential approach for pharmaceutical researcher to implicate the knowledge of brazilin in the formulation of new drug and to reveal therapeutic and gaps requiring future research opportunities.More studies are needed to evaluate the potential application of brazilin as preservative and coloring agent in food processing industries.

Objective:To evaluate the antibacterial and antioxidant activities and to identify the volatile bioactive compounds present in different crude extracts of the seaweed Caulerpa racemosa var.cylindracea.Methods:Caulerpa racemosa harvested from the intertidal zone of Mostaganem coast(N 35?54’37.94",E 0?3’17.37")was subjected to Soxhlet extraction using methanol,chloroform,and hexane solvents.Antioxidant properties were assessed by using 2,2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH),2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS)andβ-carotene bleaching assays.The antibacterial activity was evaluated on six standard bacterial strains using the agar disc diffusion method.The GC-MS analysis was performed using non-polar and polar capillary columns.Results:The chloroform extract of Caulerpa racemosa exhibited higher contents of polyphenols[(123.91±1.46)mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry extract]and tannins[(59.28±5.43)mg catechin equivalent/g dry extract](P<0.001)and was the most effective in scavenging DPPH[(1.98±0.08)mg/m L]and ABTS[(1.66±0.05)mg/m L]radicals.The hexane extract displayed the best antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus,Bacillus cereus,and Pseudomonas aeruginosa,producing inhibition zones of(11.16±0.76),(9.00±0.00)and(9.33±1.15)mm,respectively.The l-(+)-ascorbic acid 2,6-dihexadecanoate and 4-hydroxy-2 methylproline were among the most abundant volatile compounds.Besides conventional fatty acids,cis-10-heptadecenoic acid,nonahexacontanoic acid,and dodecanoic acid,3-hydroxy-were identified.Two phytosterols were identified:stigmast-5-en-3-ol-(12.9%)and stigmast-5-en-3.beta.-ol,(24 S)-(4.57%).Conclusions:The preliminary identification of the volatile compounds reveals the presence of some new bioactive components not reported previously in Caulerpa racemosa from other geographical areas.Some of these compounds possess an interesting potential for pharmaceutical/nutraceutical applications.
