Generation of dual and quad‑optical frequency combs in the injected radiation free mode‑locked frequency‑shifted feedback laser

The results of an optoelectronic system—frequency-shifted feedback(FSF)laser experimental examination are *** considered FSF laser is seeded only with optical amplifer spontaneous emission(ASE)and operates in the mode-locked regime,whereby the output radiation is sequence of short pulses with a repetition rate determined by the delay time in its optical feedback *** the frequency domain,the spectrum of such a pulse sequence is an optical frequency comb(OFC).These OFCs we call *** consider the possibility of tunable acousto-optic(AO)dual and quad-comb frequency spacing downconversion in the FSF laser seeded with ASE and operating in the mode-locked *** examined system applies a single frequency shifting loop with single AO tunable flter as the frequency shifter that is fed with several radio frequency signals *** initial OFCs with frequency spacing of about 6.5 MHz may be obtained in the wide spectral range and their width,envelope shape and position in the optical spectrum may be *** dual-combs are obtained with a pair of initial OFCs aroused by two various ultrasound waves in the acousto-optic tunable flter(AOTF).The dual-combs frequency spacing is determined by the frequency diference of the signals applied to the AOTF piezoelectric transducer and can be tuned *** quad-combs are obtained with three initial OFCs,forming a pair of dual-combs,appearing when three ultrasound frequencies feed the AOTF *** quad-combs frequency spacing is defned by the diference between the frequency spacing of ***-combs with more than 5000 spectral lines and tunable frequency spacing are *** successive frequency downconversion gives the possibility to reduce the OFC frequency spacing form several MHz for initial OFC to tens of kHz for quad-combs.

Optical image processing using acousto-optic modulators as programmable volume holograms: a review [Invited]

Bragg processing using a volume hologram offers an alternative in optical image processing in contrast to Fourier-plane processing. By placing a volume hologram near the object in an optical imaging setup, we achieve Bragg processing. In this review, we discuss various image processing methods achievable with acousto-optic modulators as dynamic and programmable volume holograms. In particular, we concentrate on the discussion of various differentiation operations leading to edge extraction capabilities.

We demonstrated an actively acousto-optic Q-switched pulsed laser based on Pr:YLF at 604 nm.A 604 nm continuous-wave(CW)laser with a maximum output power of 3.84 W was achieved for the first time,to the best of our *** Q-switched laser with a maximum average output power of 0.384 W,a narrowest pulse duration of 44.5 ns,a maximum single pulse energy of~64.1μJ,and a maximum peak power of~1.44 kW was obtained at a repetition rate of 6 *** far as we know,this was the first report of such a narrow pulse duration,high-power,and high-energy Q-switched pulsed laser at604 *** beam quality factors M_(x)^(2)and M_(y)^(2)were measured to be 2.87 and 2.40,*** results show that acousto-optic Q-switching is a promising method for obtaining pulsed lasers.

Hybrid laser ultrasonic inspection based on optical fiber technique

Laser generation and electromagnetic acoustic transducer （EMAT） detection techniques are combined as a hybrid ultrasonic technique for the inspection of the defects in the steel. Laser transmits through the optical fiber and irradiates on the steel surface. In case of inspection, Rayleigh wave is generated to test the surface defects based on the principle of mode conversion. In order to improve the testing accuracy and signal-to- noise ratio, wavelet soft-threshold method is introduced in the present work. Experimental results show that errors of testing surface defect are less than 10%, which proves laser-EMAT technique to be suitable for non- destructive assessment of metallic materials.

Theoretical studies on optimum design of acousto-optic modulator using lithium niobate crystal

We theoretically study tile optimum design of anisotropic acousto-optic modulator （AOM） based on lithium niobate crystal. Four different kinds of operating modes in the XOZ and YOZ acousto-optic （AO） planes arc systematically analyzed by the tangent condition theory and the optimized operating mode is deternfined. Purthermore, the dependence of the AO merit on the operating frequency and the off-axis angle of the AOM are also obtained by numerical simulations.

Studies on the wideband design of acousto-optic deflector using lithium niobate crystal

We present theoretical studies on the wideband design of bulk lithium niobate （LN） acousto-optic deflector （AOD） through the walk-off design of the ultrasonic vector, which satisfies the momentum match condition. The ultrasonic properties of LN crystal are studied by solving the Christopher equation and the reciprocal velocity curves in the operating planes XOZ and YOZ are systematically obtained. The calculation results show that the bandwidth of the AOD is highly dependent on the incident angle of light beam and the velocity of the ultrasonic waves, which show strict linear properties in the operating bandwidth. Furthermore, the dependence of the central frequency of the AOD on the angle of incident light and the ultrasonic velocity are also analyzed.

Hybrid laser-EMAT system for non-destructive testing continuous casting billet

A novel laser-electro magnetic acoustic transducer （EMAT） system for nondestructive testing NDT surface crack of continuous casting billet （CCB） is provided. Rayleigh wave generated by line laser source is used to detect the surface crack of CCB. According to the principle of mode conversion from Rayleigh wave to shear wave, the defect signal is received using the shear wave EMAT sensor in a non-contact way. Experiments are carried out on the steel sample with size 30 × 0.2 ×0.2 （mm） of crack. Further, the influences of life off value and distance between EMAT sensor and laser beam on the testing sensitivity are discussed, respectively. It is found that the life off value is the main factor that effects sensitivity of the proposed method. There is a clear prospect of the method applied to test continuously cast bloom at high temperature.

State space formalism of Feynman diagram theory for acousto-optic interactions:Ⅱ. multifrequency case

A Feynman diagram theory for acousto-optic (AO) interactions is established, which provides a general method to calculate the scattering amplitudes and intensities for both single-frequency and multifrequency AO interactions. The method is based on counting the number of allowable Feynman diagrams. The following important assertion has been proved rigorously in this paper. The ratios of the numbers of Feynman diagrams allowable in various Bragg diffractions (isotropic, nondegenerate birefringent, and degenerate birefringent) to that in Raman-Nath diffraction are independent of the number of different acoustic frequencies, being a function only of the order of the Feynman diagram and the diffraction order of the final state. General expressions for these ratios are obtained. Based on this, complete perturbation solutions for the scattering amplitudes and intensities are obtained for any kind of AO interactions, any number of acoustic frequencies, and any final state. This theory gives all results obtained previously by the theory of coupled-wave equation. The theory is also verified by comparing with experiments.

This work presents a short review of the current research on the acousto-optic mechanism applied to optical fibers. The role of the piezoelectric element and the acousto-optic modulator in the excitation of flexural and longitudinal acoustic modes in the frequency range up to 1.2 MHz is highlighted. A combination of the finite elements and the transfer matrix methods is used to simulate the interaction of the waves with Bragg and long period gratings. Results show a very good agreement with experimental data. Recent applications such as the writing of gratings under the acoustic excitation and a novel viscometer sensor based on the acousto-optic mechanism are discussed.
