Hyocholic acid species(HCA,hyodeoxycholic acid,and their glycine and taurine conjugated forms)comprise 80%of the composition of pig bile(Haslewood,1956).An interesting fact about pigs is that they do not get diabetes even though they eat almost everything and in abundant amounts,a diabetes-promoting diet.The first use of pig bile for treatment of‘xiao-ke’.

The genome, containing total genetic material in the organism, i.e., DNA, and RNA for some viruses, encodes the information needed for all life activity. Besides the DNA in cell nucleus, mitochondrial DNA and chloroplast DNA are also important components of the genome. Using high-throughput sequencing, a tremendous amount of genomic data has been obtained. Currently, 1,704 archaeal, 26,075 bacterial, 16,837 viral, and 4,688 eukaryotic genomes have been sequenced and submitted to the GenBank database (https://www.***.nlm.***.gov/genome). These abundant sequences have greatly accelerated basic research, in areas such as gene function, genomic diversity and structure, and even life origins and evolution. This review summarizes current knowledge of genome structure and genomic evolution, and advanced sequencing technologies.

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have been regarded as one of the most promising energy storage systems to break through the upper limit of lithium-ion batteries.However,the rampant diffusions of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in the electrolyte induced the shuttle effect between anode and cathode,resulting in low sulfur utilization,low energy efficiency and short cycling life.Herein,we prove the rational design and construction of Ni nanoparticles filled in vertically grown N-doped bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on graphene nanosheets (Ni@NG-CNTs) as efficient polysulfide barrier for high-performance LSBs.The unique design integrates graphene nanosheets and CNTs into hierarchical architectures with one-dimensional (1D) CNTs,two-dimensional (2D) ultrethin nanosheets and abundant carbon nanocages.This design provides large surface area for lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) adsorption,accelerates electron transport and enhances electrochemical redox of LiPSs.Benefiting from the unique structural features,the LSBs with the Ni@NG-CNTs as polysulfide barrier keep high reversible specific capacities of 309.1 and 265.0 mAh·g-1 at 5 and 10 C rates after 500 cycles.This work provides a new strategy for constructing self-assembled hybrids of CNTs and graphene nanosheets with abundant carbon nanocages for high-performance LSBs.

Ginkgo leave, a naturally abundant resource, has been successfully employed as the raw material to prepare ni- trogen doped porous carbon （NDPC） materials. The preparation of the porous carbon does not involve assistance of any activation or template technique. The as-obtained NDPC shows favorable features for electrochemical energy storage, which can not only provide multiple sites for the storage and insertion of Li ions, but also facilitate rapid mass transport of electrons and Li ions. As a result, the NDPC when evaluated as an anode material for lithium ion batteries delivers high reversible capacity （505 mAh·g-1 at 0.1 C）, excellent rate capability （190 mAh·g-1 at 10 C）. These favorable properties suggest that the NDPC can be a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries （LIBs）.

Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi produces abundant root-specific f lavones(RSFs),which provide various benefits to human health.We have elucidated the complete biosynthetic pathways of baicalein and wogonin.However,the transcriptional regulation of f lavone biosynthesis in S.baicalensis remains unclear.We show that the SbMYB3 transcription factor functions as a transcriptional activator involved in the biosynthesis of RSFs in S.baicalensis.Yeast one-hybrid and transcriptional activation assays showed that SbMYB3 binds to the promoter of flavone synthase II-2(SbFNSII-2)and enhances its transcription.In S.baicalensis hairy roots,RNAi of SbMYB3 reduced the accumulation of baicalin and wogonoside,and SbMYB3 knockout decreased the biosynthesis of baicalein,baicalin,wogonin,and wogonoside,whereas SbMYB3 overexpression enhanced the contents of baicalein,baicalin,wogonin,and wogonoside.Transcript profiling by qRT–PCR demonstrated that SbMYB3 activates SbFNSII-2 expression directly,thus leading to more abundant accumulation of RSFs.This study provides a potential target for metabolic engineering of RSFs.
