The organic imine and their metal complexes were synthesized and characterized by IR, UV and NMR. The third order non linear optical properties of the compounds were investigated. The measurements of second hyperpolarizabilites were performed using single beam z-scan technique with 8 ns laser pulses. Ligand and its Copper, zinc and Nickel complexes show good third order non linearity whereas Manganese complex did not show any activity.

The present paper reports a novel coordination polymer[Co(HO)(1,2-BIB)][Co(DBS)(1,2-BIB)]·7HO(1,2-BIB=1,2-bis((1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl)benzene,HDBS=sodium 3,5-dicarboxybenzene-sulfonate).The compound has a one-dimensional chain structure(Figure 1(A)).The asymmetric unit consists of two crystallographically independent Co(II)***,the compound exhibits excellent third-order nonlinear optical *** 1(B)shows that the open-aperture z-scan trace is symmetric with respect to the focus with a maximum transmittance,suggesting a saturable absorption(SA)*** third order NLO absorptive coefficientsβcan be estimated to be 1.32×10 m·*** closed aperture z-scan trace presents a pattern of a peak in pre-focus and a valley in post-focus(Figure 1(C)).This peak-valley configuration suggests a negative nonlinear refractive index and a characteristic self-defocusing *** refractive indexγis 1.25×10 m·*** compound is expected to be appealing candidates for third-order NLO materials applications.

We reported a Ni(II) coordination polymer with one-dimensional chain structure, namely [Ni(1,2-BIB)(SDA)]·4 H2 O(1,2-BIB = 1,2-bis((1 H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl)benzene, H2 SDA = 4,4’-sulfonyldibenzoic acid). The coordination environment of the Ni(II) ion in the compound is completed by two oxygen atoms from one SDA ligand and four nitrogen atoms from four 1,2-BIB ligands. The SDA ligand uses one carboxyl group binding the metal ion in chelating mode, and the other carboxyl group is not involved in the coordination. Both 1,2-BIB ligands adopt same coordination configuration to bind two metal centers to form a 22-memmbered ring. These rings are extended along a axis to produce a one-dimensional chain structure. These chains are aligned in the bc plane to form one-dimensional cavities along a axis. Lattice water molecules are located in the cavities and make contact with the host channels through hydrogen-bonding interactions between the lattice water molecules and carboxyl groups, to form three-dimensional supramolecular structure. The open-aperture z-scan traces of the compound is shown in Figure 1(B). The curves are nearly symmetric with respect to the focus with a minimum transmittance, indicating that the third order NLO absorptive coefficient β is positive and that the compound display obvious reverse saturable absorption. The third order NLO absorptive coefficient β is calculated to be 4.42×10-7 m·W-1. The compound will be a good candidate for NLO materials.

Based on z-scan technique, the nonlinear absorption characteristics and nonlinear refraction characteristics of znO crystal, znS crystal and znS e crystal were studied under the picosecond(ps) laser pulses and the femtosecond(fs) laser pulses, respectively. The experimental results show that the nonlinear absorption characteristics of the znO crystal, znS crystal and zn Se crystal are reverse saturable absorption mainly due to two-photon absorption under the ps laser pulses, and their nonlinear absorption coefficients are 4.5×10 m/W, 3.5×10 m/W, 9×10 m/W, respectively. The nonlinear refraction characteristics of the three kinds of crystals are self-defocusing and the nonlinear refractive indexs are-5.8×10 m/W,-1.5×10 m/W,-8.3×10 m/W, respectively because of free carrier. The nonlinear absorption characteristics of the zn O crystal and znS crystal are reverse saturable absorption mainly due to three-photon absorption under the fs laser pulses whose three-photon absorption coefficients are 2.4×10 m/W, 2.6×10 m/W, respectively, and the zn Se crystal is two-photon absorption whose nonlinear absorption coefficient is 7.3×10 m/W. The nonlinear refraction characteristics of the three kinds of crystals are self-focusing because of bound electron under the fs laser pulses. The fifth-order nonlinear refractive indexs of znO crystal and znS crystal are-1.23×10 m/W, 1.6×10 m/W, respectively, and the nonlinear refractive index of the zn Se crystal is 1.7×10 m/W. The experimental results show that zinc semiconductor crystals materials and laser pulse width can influence the optical nonlinear characteristics of materials.

Using z-scan technique to investigate the nonlinear absorption characteristics of carbon quantum dots(CDs) under the picosecond laser pulse with the wavelength of 532 nm, which the CDs’ types were same particle size of different solvent and same solvent of different particle sizes. The experimental results showed that the nonlinear absorption of water-soluble CDs of 3.9 nm was saturated absorption, and oil-soluble CDs’ was reverse saturable absorption for the same particle size, their nonlinear absorption coefficients were-2.09×10 m/W and 6.9×10 m/W, respectively;the nonlinear absorption of water-soluble CDs of 4.8 nm was reverse saturable absorption, and oil-soluble CDs’ was saturated absorption for same particle size, their nonlinear absorption coefficients were 1.9×10 m/W and-1.3×10 m/W, respectively. The experimental results indicate that the nonlinear absorptions of CDs are mainly influenced by the solvent effect and quantum size effect in the same.

We present our results from the measurements of third-order optical nonlinearity in DNA doped Rhodamine 6G/PVA films achieved through z-scan measurements using ~2 picosecond (ps) pulses at a wavelength of 800 nm. The films demonstrated negative nonlinear refractive index (n2) with magnitudes of (0.065 - 2.89) × 10–14 cm2/W with varying concentration of DNA. Open aperture data demonstrated strong two-photon absorption with a magnitude of ~1.6 cm/GW for films doped with 2 wt% of DNA. The recovery time of excited state population, retrieved from the degenerate pump-probe experimental data, was <4 ps. These data suggests that DNA is promising material for applications such as optical switching.

Boron carbon nitride(BCN) is a nanoscale novel semiconductor,which has attracted extensive concerns owing to it’s controllable band-gap and environment-friendly *** by laser pulses under 1064 and 532 nm,the nonlinear absorption coefficient and the nonlinear refractive index of BCN nanosheets were obtained by z-scan measurement ***,the nonlinear absorption properties of BCN nanosheets have a changeover from saturable absorption to reverse saturable *** noteworthy is the corresponding nonlinear optical performances can be adjusted by the amount of incorporated *** research indicates that the BCN is an excellent nonlinear optical material which is hopeful to find extensive applications in sensitive optical components and laser protection.
