Hawthorne is at his best when dealing with the topics of the sin, the supernatural, and the New England past. As a great symbolist, he made good use of symbols to express his ideas. Some important symbols in his"young goodman brown", such as the pink ribbons, the fellow traveler’s staff, are closely associated with the theme, relating to man’s sins. This paper mainly discusses the use of symbolism in his young goodman brown with a view to contributing to a better understanding of the whole story.

Since the appearance of the Gothic novel in the late 18 th century, the usage of Gothic elements has been applied to the creation of literary works, and it has influenced many excellent writers. Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the outstanding representatives. His short story young goodman brown was regarded as"one of the ten best stories written by an American"by Stephen *** goodman brown will be interpreted from the perspective of Gothic style to appreciate its unique Gothic *** the analysis of the Gothic elements reflected in young goodman brown, more readers will pay attention to the charm of Hawthorne's short story, and show that Gothic novels with its terrifying atmosphere give readers a new visual experience, digging the hidden evil as well as calling for goodness of humanity.

young goodman brown is Hawthorn’s very important short ***,many people may know little about *** author believes that the narrative methods,the use of several images,and the characterization of the protagonist goodman brown are the three most important narrative skills in this ***,this study aims to analyze the story from these three aspects to help readers have a basic understanding of the story and its *** uses the well-designed narration to elucidate the work perfectly and reveal the human’s original sin,which leads the readers to think of the sin and its horrible consequences further.

A View Of young goodman brown From Frye's Theories Of Symbolism

Herman Nothrop Frye was a famous Canadian literary critic and theorist. According to him, symbol was :"Any unit of any literary structure that can be isolated for critical attention." He partitioned literary symbolism into five levels or phases. Each phase independently possessed its own mythos, ethos, and dianoia. These phases were: Symbol as motif; Symbol as sign; Symbol as image; Symbol as archetype and symbol as monad. This paper tries to apply his theories of symbolism to the comment of young goodman brown, one of the best short stories written by the American romantic writer Nathaniel Hawthorne.

young goodman brown is one of the most popular short stories written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Since its publication,quite a lot of analyses have been made of this short but excellent story. In reading the book, one can never miss those symbolic meanings. However, with an analysis of the journey which brown takes, the artistic skills and symbolic images carefully employed by Hawthorne, this thesis aims at describing the loss of faith, and also attempting to seek the reasons for brown's tragedy and find possible solution to this dilemma of faith crisis.

young goodman brown is one of the representative works of Nathaniel Hawthorne,an outstanding American *** western critics have interpreted the novel from different perspectives,but few in China have made a special exposition of the“scapegoat”model in the ***,this article tries to interpret the“Scapegoat”image from the perspective of the myth archetype theory,trying to reveal the failure of redeeming function in scapegoat mechanism,at the same time,it also aims to to search out one of the many factors which endow this novel with infinite charm.
