Nitrogen and phosphorus intake by phytoplankton in the xiamen bay

This paper describes a time series experiment examining the nitrogen and phosphorus intake of natural phytoplankton communities by a microcosms *** samples containing natural phytoplankton communities were collected from waters around Baozhu Islet in inner xiamen bay and around Qingyu Islet in the outer *** goal was to elucidate the relationship between phytoplankton population enhancement,the biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from the seawater,and the phytoplankton nitrogen and phosphorus intake ratio based on nitrogen and phosphorus removal from seawater by phytoplankton,to provide a basis for detecting prewarning conditions for red tide and the assessment of red tide *** key results were obtained:*** the experiment,the nitrogen and phosphorus seawater concentrations in samples from these two sites were negatively and closely correlated to the logarithm of the phytoplankton cell concentration and to the value of the apparent oxygen *** ratio of the intake coefficients was 3.5:1 for phosphorus and 1.1:1 for nitrogen for the phytoplankton between these samples from around Baozhu Islet and Qingyu Islet,*** indicates that the intake capabilities of phytoplankton for nitrogen in the two waters are essentially ***,for phosphorus,the capability was much higher in the Baozhu Islet waters than the Qingyu Islet *** other words,the phytoplankton in Qingyu Islet waters produced more biomass while consuming the same amount of phosphorus as the other waters;*** phytoplankton nitrogen and phosphorus intake ratio from the Baozhu Islet and Qingyu Islet waters was 20:1 and 36:1,*** latter waters had a significantly higher ratio than the former and both were higher than the Redfield *** results indicate that nitrogen and phosphorus intake ratios by phytoplankton can vary significantly from region to region.

The study on three-dimensional numerical model and fronts of the Jiulong Estuary and the xiamen bay

Applying the methods of on-site observation and dynamic model, the research on the fronts at the Jiulong Estuary has been carried out, during which spatial and temporal distribution, dynamic characteristics and formation mechanism of salinity fronts are analyzed and discussed. The research shows that the estuarine fronts mainly lie in the area from the Jiyu Islet to the Haimen Island, outside of Yuweizai to Hulishan cross-section, the near coast of Yuweizai and the south of the Songyu-Gulangyu Channel. The fronts in the former two regions are formed directly by plume, while the one near the coast of Yuweizai is a tidal intrusion front caused by flood current and the one at the south of the Songyu-Gulangyu Channel is the result of current shear transformation. Under normal circumstances, fresh water of the Jiulong River mainly influences the inside of the xiamen bay, and when it is in typhoon seasons, plume front can affect the Taiwan Strait and has an effect on the biogeochemical Drocesses in the strait.

Seasonal variations of group-specific phytoplankton cell death in xiamen bay, China

The importance of phytoplankton cell death is being increasingly recognized, however, there are still no published reports on this in xiamen bay. In this study, the proportion of dead phytoplankton cells associated with environmental factors was assessed at a station in xiamen bay from December 2012 to December 2013, using a cell digestion assay, which is an effective method to analyze dead/ living ceils in complex natural phytoplankton communities. The percentages of dead cells （% DC） in the total phytoplankton in summer （16%＋6%） were lower than those in winter （27%q-16%）. Six groups of phytoplankton （G1-G6） were categorized by flow cytometry. These phytoplankton communities with diverse seasonal variations in % DC had different responses to environmental constraints. The main factors affecting mortality were temperature and salinity, while nutrient concentration showed little influence on phytoplankton death. Additio^aally, our results provide evidence that chlorophyll a concentrations had an inverse relationship with total phytoplankton % DC and viable cell abundance was more meaningful than total cells to explain variations in environmental parameters （such as Chl a）. Moreover, the lowest mean % DC in total phytoplankton was 16%q-6% at our sample site, which is in a subtropical area with high water temperatures, full solar radiation, and rich nutrients. This indicates that phytoplankton cell death is a process that cannot be ignored. In summary, phytoplankton cell death is important in understanding the dynamics of phytoplankton communities and the fimctioning of subtropical ecosystems.

Based on the survey of surface sediment in xiamen bay in October 2011, the speciation, distribution, and potential ecological risk assessment of heavy metals （Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Cr） in this area were studied us-ing the sequential extraction method and ecological risk assessment method. The results indicated：（1） the total concentrations of these heavy metals were influenced by runoff, industrial wastewater, and sewage, and were all higher in the coastal area than the offshore area while the highest area of Pb was a little far-ther away from the coastal water due to atmosphere deposition;（2） sequential extractions suggested that Cu was mainly composed with residual and Fe/Mn-oxide bound fractions, Pb was bound to Fe/Mn-oxide, Zn and Cr were dominated by residual, and Cd bound to exchangeable and carbonate fractions; （3） the order of migration and transformation sequence was Cd＆gt;Pb＆gt;Cu＆gt;Zn＆gt;Cr and the degree of pollution was Cd＆gt;Pb＆gt;Cu＆gt;Zn＆gt;Cr;and （4） the ratios of the secondary and primary phases showed that Zn and Cr were both clean, Cu may be polluted, Pb was moderately polluted, while Cd was heavily polluted.

Grazing impact of microzooplankton on phytoplankton in the xiamen bay using pigment-specific dilution technique

Phytoplankton group-specific growth and microzooplankton grazing were determined seasonally using the dilution technique with high-performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） in the xiamen bay, a subtropical bay in southeast China, between May 2003 and February 2004. The results showed that growth rates of phytoplankton ranged from 0.71 to 2.2 d^-1 with the highest value occurred in the inner bay in May. Mierozooplankton grazing rates ranged from 0.5 to 3.1 d^-1 with the highest value occurred in the inner bay in August. Microzooplankton grazing impact ranged from 39% to 95% on total phytoplankton Chl a biomass, and 65% to 181% on primary production. The growth and grazing rates of each phytoplankton group varied, the highest growth rate （up to 3.3 d^-1 ） was recorded for diatoms in August, while the maximum grazing rate （ up to 2.1 d ^-1 ） was recorded for chlorophytes in February in the inner bay. Among main phytoplankton groups, grazing pressure of microzooplankton ranged from 10% to 83% on Chl a biomass, and from 14% to 151% on primary production. The highest grazing pressure on biomass was observed for cryptophytes （83%） in August, while the maximum grazing pressure on primary production was observed for eyanobacteria （up to 151% ） in December in the inner bay. Net growth rates of larger phytoplanktons （diatoms and dinoflagellates） were higher than those of smaller groups （ prasinophytes, chlorophytes and cyanobacteria）. Relative preference index showed that microzooplankton grazed preferentially on prasinophytes and avoided to harvest diatoms in cold seasons （December and February）.

THE BIOGEOCHEMISTRY OF PHOTOSYNTHETIC PIGMENTS IN THE JIULONG RIVER ESTUARY AND WESTERN xiamen bay

High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of photosynthetic pigments in samples from Western xiamen bay and the Jiulong River Estuary showed that their major carotenoids were fucoxanthin, peridinin, zeaxanthin, violaxanthin, and diadinoxanthin. Diatoms dominated in the spring bloom, dinoflagellates in summer. Violaxanthin and chlorophyll b indicated the appearance of chrysophytes and green algae, most of which were freshwater species. The high phytoplankton biomass region was located at the inner part of the bay. Diatoms and dinoflagellates dominated phytoplankton communities, contributing to over 50% of total biomass. All the main diagnostic carotenoids were significantly (P<0.01) correlated negatively to dissolved inorganic phosphorus, suggesting that they were limited by phosphorus. The high negative linear relationship (P<0.0001) between dissolved inorganic phosphorus and peridinin (dinoflagellates indicator) implied the potential of dissolved inorganic phosphorus for triggering red tide events in this region.

Monthly field surveys were conducted between August 2010 and July 2015 to explore seasonal group characteristics and occurrence patterns of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins(Sousa chinensis) in xiamen bay,*** formed larger groups in winter and spring(dry seasons)than in summer and autumn(wet seasons)(U = 1564.00,P bay) during the dry seasons,and in peripheral areas(Jiulong River Estuary,Wuyu,and Dadeng-Xiaodeng) during the wet *** occurrence patterns may be associated with the seasonal prey shifts between these different environments.

Quantitative Application Study on Remote Sensing of Suspended Sediment

Quantitative application on remote sensing of suspended sediment is an important aspect of the engineering application of remote sensing study. In this paper, the xiamen bay is chosen as the study area. Eleven different phases of the remote sensing data are selected to establish a quantitative remote sensing model to map suspended sediment by using remote sensing images and the quasi-synchronous measured sediment data. Based on empirical statistics developed are the conversion models between instantaneous suspended sediment concentration and tidally-averaged suspended sediment concentration as well as the conversion models between surface layer suspended sediment concentration and＂ the depth-averaged suspended sediment concentration. On this basis, the quantitative application integrated model on remote sensing of suspended sediment is developed. By using this model as well as multi-temporal remote sensing images, multi-year averaged suspended sediment concentration of the xiamen bay are predicted. The comparison between model prediction and observed data shows that the multi-year averaged suspended sediment concentration of studied sites as well as the concentration difference of neighboring sites can be well predicted by the remote sensing model with an error rate of 21.61% or less, which can satisfy the engineering requirements of channel deposition calculation.

From August 2010 to December 2013,field photo-identification surveys were conducted to explore the social organization and distribution patterns of a threatened Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin(Sousa chinensis) population in xiamen bay,*** of 58 photo-identified dolphins,56 dolphins that were sighted at least 2 times were used for social structure *** association pattern among individuals was divided into 2 discrete communities with strong geographic adherence:27 dolphins assigned to an eastern community(EC) and 29 dolphins assigned to a western community(WC).Among the WC individuals,9 dolphins formed mixed groups with EC individuals at Tongan bay and the mouth of Tongan bay,leading to low-level intercommunity *** 50%kernel density estimate(KDE) and minimum convex polygon(MCP) of each community were calculated,with the core habitats presented here differing substantially from those reported in previous *** propose that the geographical segregation of these 2 communities and the apparent shift in core habitats could be the result of adaptation by dolphins to local environmental conditions,notably intensive anthropogenic activities.
